West Germany the 64-Point question was this could a ragtag Bunch of German american football players do anything against the great Danes of the univer sity of new York at Albany Here was your answer saturday Albany 64, Offenbach beavers 0. It was t Cuba erasing said Albany defensive tackle Anthony Gambino but they did t have the skill position peo ple and they Don t have the coaches we have. We have a George Bock the Danes right defensive end said we heard they had 15 Guys at practice. You can t be organized Tike that. We had 50 a a diplomatic Albany coach Bob Ford said for both teams there was just not enough time to practice. But we swarmed to the Ball you could say that. It was t so much Albany amassing Oklahoma like numbers. The Danes totalled just 12 first Downs on231 126 passing. It was All Albany because of two big fac tors the Danes never turned Over the Ball and their defense devoured Offenbach recovered two of the beavers four fumbles and it intercepted six of James Tucker s passes. Cornerback. Owen Sanford picked off two and four other Danes Mike Ford Jeff Davis Rich Strachan and Mike Cerminaro intercepted the others. The beavers simply had nowhere to throw not to mention run. Their 15 rushes resulted in minus 20 Yards. Tucker completed 10 of his 22 passes four to Bea vers and six to Danes. Of Offenbach s three first Downs two came on penalties. That offensive performance was directed by a quarterback who played some at Texas i paso. Our problem was a Lack of practice said Tucker a 6-foot-3, 215-Poundcr who normally plays for the German american league s Kaiserslautern warriors when he s not working at receivers were cutting one Way and i was throwing another then there was Albany s thieving secondary. They were quite Quick said Tucker. They were not big. But Quick. They were filling the gaps playing zone. We could t get Tucker s first completion found Chuck Brownlee for 21 Yards and the beavers first first Down. There were two problems Only seconds were left before halftime and Albany already led 40-0. By then even the Frankfurt High school band had Long since walked out. The few Hundred fans who attended this Sun drenched game expected to see Albany Facea German american All Star team. Instead they were treated to Offenbach s beavers of the a a s third division augmented by some other a a players and army Guys right out of the Barracks. What happened the beavers coach . Knox planned to coach those All stars but said he received a letter Friday from the a a s Hussen division stating that the game was against a a league rules and that any All Star playing sat urday would be booted from the league. Knox said that forced him to Field his beavers. I did not mess up Knox said. All the proper letters were written to league Headquarters and to the Hussen office. It s a Lack of knowledge 9n the part of the Hussen people. It s their loss. This is my Swan song with German american the disgusted Knox an army sergeant who helped found the a a league 12 years ago said he would shoot for coaching in Safe s Continental sports conference. A sympathetic Ford said it s a great experience but i wish All the Good people had played so we could pc seen where we stand. And in turn they could be seen where they Albany s blockers and runners were less sympathetic. They slowed to nine touchdowns and one Field goal a 45 yarder by Anthony Chechilo. Is Lynda w. Sparks receiver Chuck Brownlee of the Offenbach a a earn tries to elude an Albany Tacker. Eight Danes scored the ads. Steve Mcneil opened with a 22-Yardcr, then came Kevin Adams from 5 Yards Martin Gordon from 21, Brian Lindsley on an 8 Yard pass from i Al Ryder Brad Acker on a 50-Yard punt return and Pete Pedro from 39 for the 40-0 halftime Giroux scampered from 5 Yards out to Start the second half scoring. Acker scored again on a 39-Yard strike from Ryder. Chechilo followed with his Cannon and Ryder finished the scoring on a 20 Yard was surprised said Ryder of the rout. I did t think it would be that Ryder s 42 Yards in three carries led All rushers. The Danes spread the Rush ing wealth with Pedro totalling 40 Yards Gordon 39, Mcneil 35, John Albrici and Adams 32 each and Giroux 31. The tackling was t there Adams said of the beavers defense. The Guy were not wrapping doing Basic fundamentals you learn in High school. Their Guys were Good sized. If it was body building or a track meet they d be like us. But it s Basic Pedro the no. 2 rusher in Albany his tory praised the great blocking. The offensive line did a helluva Job. There was a lot of room to one of those blockers 220-Pound Cen Ter Pat Clark moved 240-Pound nose guard Mike Drew out of the Way. That the same Drew who anchored Rhein main s Safe Champion defense in 1988 and is a perennial air Force Power lifting was technique said Clark. I could Tell he was a really Strong Guy a Power life in Guy. Maybe it s the coaching. There was no Way i could overpower him. It s the Way our offence is set up the Wishbone. It s a complicated offence. He had to read for a by then it was too late. He s not bad Drew said of Clark. He s a Good Guy except on extra Points. I blocked s Rhein main teammates Tim Langley and Rich Lawlon never dressed out. Bill Carey the rockets line coach yanked his guards and left Knox s staff Fri Day when he heard he would t get Offen Sive line help from other a a teams. Carey did t want to risk his players health. So Drew was the Only Safe player out there. He knew precisely Why the beavers lost Lack of Bornhop Poque top Usa eur lifting Wal Flecken West Germany Vii corps Jim Bornhop and v corps Jackie Poque put on great shows at the Usa eur Power lift ing championships Here saturday.
