European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 01, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday Junel 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep Pickin s athletes of year picks All that s left and another year has passed Well Al most. Active Competition on the Dodds sports front came to a screeching halt last week with the naming of the final track 4 Field soccer and gymnastics champions. All that remains of Vintage 1988-89 on the High school sports front is the naming of the stars and stripes athletes of the year the deadline is sat urday and the final wrap up column. Although Only one record was set in the Central european championships there was no Lack of excitement at Augsburg s Rosnau stadium As Many of the races featured bang bang finishes and the judges sometimes had to rely on a video rerun to determine some of the places. The Central european record ironically came in a race that was t bang bang Hahn s Stephanie Powell beat defending Champion and previous re Cord Holder Sheila Merriweather by almost three seconds in setting a new 300-meter hurdles Mark of 45.5. Crri Walher who nipped Powell by a tenth of a second in the 100 hurdles in fact faltered to fourth Over the Long haul behind Frankfurt s Shea Spradlin and Baum older s Kasha Mccall. Powell s record actually was the second Dodds Mark to fall this year. The other was in the girls shot put in the Germany a regional when Lahr s Danielle Larose uncorked a 37-5 4 heave. The dashes both boys and girls were exciting. In the girls 200, Wiesbaden s Trina Lattany nipped Hahn s Tonya Mckelvey at the tape both being clocked in 25.4 Lattany in turn was edged by Ramstein s Dichello Bynum in the 400, and Mckel icy edged Baum older s Christy Harris in the 100, hitting the tape in 12.3. In the boys dashes Vilsick s Emmanuel Riddix and Bamburg s Reggie Collier were both clocked in 10.9 in the 100, Reddix getting the win. Riddix nudged Mannheim s Corey Jenkins in the 200 and Ramstein s Eddie Crawford Stuttgart s Ron Blair and Berlin s Carlos Marshall All were under 50 seconds in the 400 and Jenkins beat Hanau s Richard Allen at the wire in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Also impressive was Bonn s Tracy Losi. Only a freshman she ran away from Stuttgart Star Juli Cyrus to win All three distance events. She was considerably off the Dodds record in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000, but she showed a lot of potential for records the next three years if she continues to improve. On the soccer front the Patch girls and Ramstein boys took the big schools title Patch beating Frank Furt 2-1, ram Stem toppling Heidelberg 1 -0. Small schools accolades went to the Baumholz Darboys and Munich girls Baum older beating Ulm 3-1 and Munich nipping Ansbach 1-0 on Karrie dug Gan s third straight shutout. It was quite difficult to comprehend when the coaches made their All tournament selections How Duggan. The perfect goalie managed to be Over looked. Also difficult to comprehend was the selection of the big schools boys team. No goalie was chosen. That Slick selecting an All tournament baseball team without a Pitcher or Catcher or like picking an All Star football team without a quarterback. You coaches it appears to me weren t completely fair in making your selections. On the gymnastics front in the elite Field polio nals Competition Heidelberg s Rusha Kouril once again dominated the Junior division As expected she s in her own league when it comes to Dodds gymnastics. She performs regularly with a very Good German team. The seniors Competition was much closer with Kam Stcin s Heather Forbes retaining her title by Only 55/hundrcdths of a Point Over teammate Lily Patron Coli. Rodger Bowman was involved with Dodds football for Only a Short while. Hut his Impact was Felt by All. He was a military Volunteer assistant coach at Patch for two years and head coach the last two sea sons and there was a notable improvement in the program. His first team won Only one game but the1988 panthers compiled a 5-2 record and missed by Only a few Points making it to the big schools play offs. Bowman was one of those coaches who one enjoyed having report the games. His statistics were always in proper order and Complete. He always had the first names of the 9ther team s players every thing that was needed. Rodger Bowman passed away monday at Brooke army medical Center in san Antonio from complications following heart surgery. He was Only 42. He will be sorely missed on the local sports front. I offer my condolences to his widow and three children. One of the children Tim was a stars and stripes All Europe football player and an outstand ing wrestler. He was scheduled to be graduated from Patch High schools this year. Arrangements have been made for him to receive his diploma Friday night at Cole High school in san Antonio. Names in the news Jenny Ryall Brus Sels Fine Tennis player has been granted a full scholarship to Purdue on the strength of a video showing her competing in the championship match against Central european Champion Kim of Heidelberg. Ryall finished third in her Junior year and second last fall. Heidelberg goalie Tonya Spraggins has received a scholarship to Post College in Connecticut for her Sterling soccer performances Over the last three years. Spraggins recorded 27 shutouts in 31 High school games. She was credited with 132 saves while giving up Only nine goals during her 29-2 Heidelberg tenure. A Host of former Dodds athletes have enjoyed Fine years in High school and colleges around the u.s., according to reports i got from coaches at the Central european track and Field championships at Augsburg last week. Zwic Brocken s Steve Moore has been carving niches in track and Field As a freshman at the univer sity of Georgia. He ran the 100 in 10.7, the 200 in 20.8 and the 400 in 48.3 this Spring and Long jumped 23-5. Another sex Trojan Aimee harms is competing i n the distance races at album. Tracy Jaster a former Baum older luminary now a senior at Pocono Mountain pa., High school finished second in the District Cross country championships last fall and rates among the leaders in the 3,200 meters in Pennsylvania this Spring. Jason Biko Wiesbaden s outstanding distance runner the past three years lettered As the no. 4 runner in Cross country at Oklahoma state last fall and has been competing in the 800 and 5,000 meters this Spring. Other distance people from Dodds who have had a Good Spring include Munich s Ken Kramer Beth Hill and Rob Naylor and Frankfurt International school s Sam Chamberlain. Kramer and Chamberlain both made the Cross country and track teams at Ohio University. Kramer no.7 and Chamberlain no. 6 As harriers. Kramer in the 5,000 and Chamberlain in the steeplechase in track. Naylor ran Cross country last fall and competed in the 800 1 57 and steeplechase for Slippery Rock this year and Hill runs the 5.000 for augustan. Iii., College. Another former Munich athlete Laurie Oliver played first string varsity basketball at Slipp Ery Rock last Winter. Sex luminary Tiffany Wisdom continued her Fine soccer play at satellite. Fla. High school this Spring scoring 31 goals and picking up 13 assists in 13 games while earning All space coast conference recognition. Her coach Fernando Suarcz said in a Florida today feature Story Tiffany docs a lot of things you would t expect on the High school level. She has the moves you usually Sec Only on a College or professional Wisdom also was highlighted with a picture in a Florida High school state soccer Roundup in the or Lando Sentinel gaining print for her outstanding All around play. The picture was taken by former stars and stripes photographer Stephanie James Ely. The Start and strip tuba commissioner upset with Kentucky by Craig Wolff new York times for weeks David Stern the commissioner of the National basketball association watched and listened As Rick Pitino first thought about Kentucky then talked to Kentucky then visited Kentucky All during the time when basketball fans Are usually wrapped up in the Aba s Premier event and nothing else the playoffs. But tuesday when Pitino said he had decided to Lake the Kentucky Job Stern shed the usually Neutral Robe that com missioners Wear and complained about the prolonged dance that the school had engaged in with Pitino. I think that the University of Ken Tucky and the Aba Are in the same Busi Ness making Money from basketball he said. But 1 think we re a lot More Hon est with our approach. If one of my teams asked my advice if they should be talking to a College coach in the Middle of the final four 1 would suggest to them it would not be a Classy thing to certainly Pitino s decision did not come suddenly. It had been rumoured and forecast for some time. But tuesday when it was finally official his players his staff and people like Stern reacted with expressions of happiness for film but also with a certain degree of disappointment and even Shock. I knew it was coming and i was pre paring for the Day said Stu Jackson an assistant coach with the kicks who said he was staying on at the team s re quest. But to Tell you the truth i m kind of Jackson having just lost his Boss and partner the Man with whom he had also worked at Providence College recalled coming to new York two years ago. At that time he said he and Pitino were filled Only with notions of great accomplishments ahead. It Felt like a dream come True and a Mission he said. Now Jackson Felt empty suggesting that any goals the kicks might reach in the future would not be quite As Momen Tous without Pitino around. But lest he sound too stricken in the Wake of Pitino s decision to leave for Kentucky Jackson also said i am Happy for Rick and i am confident we will Jackson said he was confident he would have a Good relationship with the new coach and that the team would adapt to the new system. When a coach leaves a team at any level the effect is usually profound. The team s master plan has to be re plotted and individuals arc forced to adjust. With the kicks the ramifications seem exaggerated because Pitino had his hand in the development of so Many players and defined the club s style and identity. The team s exhaustive hustling approach was indeed exemplified As much by Mark Jackson s diving for Loose balls or Patrick Ewing s presence in the mid dle As it was by Pitino. But Pitino in stalled the full court pressure defense and he often stalked the sideline with his fist pounding into his Palm. The Pitino effect was not lost on Jack son yesterday or the players. I m sorry to see Rick go said the Forward Charles Oakley. He brought great spirit to the team. He was the Rea son we were i would have liked to have seen it through with Rick Jackson said but i know we arc destined to become . now others who cannot imagine a More prestigious Job than being head coach of the kicks will line up for the Job. The former Knick Phil Jackson now an assistant coach with the Chicago bulls said tuesday it would be Prema Ture to discuss the position specifically but he remarked Given my tics to the kicks in this year s playoffs and Over the years it s something 1 would be interested Stern who was unforgiving of Ken Tucky acknowledged that he could understand the move from Pitino s perspective. He s leaving the stress of the pros and All the travelling for what really is an easier Job the commissioner said. Inthe end who would t do that
