European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 30, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday August 30, 1989 the stars and stripes Arm Landers Page 11 letters Ann Landers is on vacation. The following column is a rerun. Her regular column will resume sept. Dear Ann Landers my husband has been bring ing things Home from the office Tor years. I am scared to death that one of these Days he will be caught. Lately i be been having nightmares and Wake up in a cold sweat. He has brought Home furniture desks tables chair stools of fice equipment both manual and electrical and cloth ing uniforms including pants shirts shoes and Jack ets which he wears around the House but not to work. How he gets the stuff out is a mystery to me. Either the guards arc Blind or they Are in on it. I have told him Many times i hate to Sec him bring these things into the House. He looks me straight in the Eye and says the business is so big they can afford it and because he has worked for so Long they owe it to at age 40 he is not about to listen to a lecture on morality. His ideas arc already formed and i know i can t change him. Our children Are too Young to under stand what is going on but i worry that one Day they will discover the truth. When this happens 1 May have to take them and leave. I have always been a very scrupulous person and itis difficult for me to describe the agony i have suffered Over this Man s Lack of integrity. In most other ways he is a Good husband and be Lieve it or not he is an excellent father. No one would dream that my husband steals like this from his employer. Can you offer me some words of Wisdom i feel helpless and trapped and afraid of the future. The wife of a Man with taking ways dear wife you Are in a Tough spot because you cannot ask any one to speak to your husband about his problem for obvious reasons. Your Best Hope is to hand him this column and Tell him the letter is yours. I will address myself to this Good husband and excellent father and Pray along with you that be tween the two of us we can reach him. Dear Friend this is no lecture. It s just me dishing out a Little common years you have been stealing from your employer. Granted the business is big and the things you lift periodically won t break them. Also granted you have worked there a Long time. But neither of these facts justifies stealing merchandise and equipment. In the eyes of the Law you Are a criminal and that s the Way you will probably be dealt with. So far you be been Lucky but eventually your Luck will run out and you will be caught. Every time you steal something you reduce the Odds of getting away with it. When you arc finally apprehended you Good name will be forever tarnished you will bring suffering and shame to your wife and children lose your Job with All the benefits built up Over the Yea Sand there is a Good Chance you will go to jail. Take a Good look at All the things you be stolen Over the years. Are they Worth your reputation your family your Job and a stretch in the Slammer i leave it up to you mister. Confidential to Don t like what we see i m not surprised. It s not a very pretty sight. Tell that goof to stay Home or bring his wife along when he comes to visit. He sounds like a Case of arrested development to me. As for your 12-year-old daughter she needs to have her speedometer adjusted. Order her to stay off his Lapland to keep her fingers out of his hair. Annoying behaviour at movies discussed i have just returned from viewing the Fly ii at the Schloss Cavern movie theater in Butzbach. This particular movie was rated a which the motion picture association of America rates As restricted under 17 requires accompanying Parent or adult i would make an educated guess that 60 percent of the viewing audience were under the age of 17. These adolescents sat in groups and i did not Sec one Parent or adult guardian associated with these groups. Their being under age would not concern me had they acted in an adult manner. However they were loud boisterous and totally disrespectful to other viewers trying to watch the movie. In fact two times the manager on duty had to come in and ask them to please be quiet. This by far is not the first Lime this has happened but this Lime they irritated me to the Brink. 1 do not stand alone. I m sure the other 40 percent would concur with my opinion. I am a on Active duty. One time i tried to enter the Frankfurt Exchange without my id card. I did have however my Usa eur Driver s. License a stateside License with photo my vehicle registration and my identification tags. The id checker on duty would not allow me to enter the Exchange and that is Fine. Except that if cafes is going to be so Adamant about whom they allow to enter such facilities they ought to be equally Selec Tive with the movie Heaters. Spec. Europe replies it s a crying shame How a few people can ruin the bin screen experience for the majority of moviegoers. Unfortunately the policy on who can attend a rated movies is written not to Force parents to baby sit their children but to allow them to determine whether they want their children to Sec a particular film. Parents do not have to attend the showing of the film. Maybe if a few parents went into the theater later to see the film their children Are watching and observe their obnoxious behaviour it would put an end to this problem. In the meantime we have contracted with the cow boy who Steps through the screen with his six shooter Blazin to silence a few of these offenders. Just kid Ding. But our employees have received further instructions on How to Deal with this problem. If a manager cannot get a group of people to be quiet for the Benefit of others the manager is now authorized to Contact the military or Security police for assistance in removing the offending persons. Reader concerned about work attitudes i thought you might be interested in printing my responses to a Survey conducted by my local civilian personnel office concerning the summer hire program. Total number of summer hires supervised two hand is years old. As a whole were they an asset or an added Bur Den my summer hires were an added Burden be cause of their Lack of initiative and need for constant supervision. Did you have enough work for the number As signed 1 could not find enough work that the sum Mer hires were willing to do or capable of. Is. Program worthwhile i think the program is great. 1 was a summer hire myself almost 10 year Sago and i gained a lot from this first Job. I taught myself to Type during my first summer and Learned valuable lessons in responsibility and interaction in the workplace. I also performed much simple and not so simple work so the units i worked for came to rely quite heavily on my being there. Length of program the length of the program is Fine. Biggest problem my biggest problem with the program is the attitude of almost All the summer hire employees i supervised or observed during this sum Mer with Only four or five exceptions i can think of the children displayed no enthusiasm toward their work. They needed to be led step by step through any task rather like a trained animal instead of showing any initiative meaning that any Little work they actually accomplished could have been done in one fourth the time by a permanent member of the staff. Other comments the Only Way i would Ever again hire a Hild on this program is if i were firs Given the Opportunity to interview applicants. I know this would put a very Large Burden on the co but it would at least Weed out Many apathetic rude or Lazy prospective employees Many of whom seem to thin that the army owes them a Quick easy Buck. I wish to commend the few Good summer hire employees i have seen and congratulate their parents for instilling values in their children. What discourages me however is that the performance of most of the summer hire employees i have seen was appalling. What will our world be like when it is run by these people who have no sense of responsibility and no enthusiasm toward work name withheld Bremerhaven West Germany Kuba Sulci High reunion the Kubasak High school class of 1980 we hold 10-year reunion aug. 16-19,1990.
