Eighteen percent of All killings of police officers in 1988 involved drug related incidents the study shows and such cases have accounted for an increasing share of the deaths. In 1984, for example drug related cases accounted for 7 percent of police killings. The study is based on reports of How police officers arc killed which the Fri began compiling from police departments in 1972. The report included killings of police officers pursuing suspected drug dealers conducting undercover drug purchases trying to arrest suspects on drug charges or responding to drug violations. Killings of officers who were intending to testify against a drug suspect were also counted. The report did not include officers killed a some one under the influence of drugs or possessing drugs. The most common killing was of an officer who participated in an undercover Effort the report said. There were seven such killings in 1988. Followed by three deaths of officers in drug raids.
