European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 22, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday september 22. 1989 the stars and stripes Page 25 commentary Ramstein fans fhe football fires give me an f. For football held a place you visit with a megaphone or earplugs. Give me an a. For animated How most people act at the football held. Give me an n. For noise which is what you hear at the football held. What does that spell fan. Not a paper fan the kind you use to Cool your face by agitating the air. This is a real fan the enthusiastic Lover of sports who heats up by agitating the other team. What would sports be without fans like Bridge chess and Pool. Boring. What was More exciting notre Dame s rocket Ismail returning those two kickoffs for touchdowns or the atmosphere in which he did it namely 105,912 fans at Michigan stadium the fans made for a chilling Irish Victory. And yet fans arc feeling the heat these Days. On the International level soccer hooliganism has led to sanctions against countries. And not jus against England. On the National level pro football fans arc being told to shut up. The National football league is so Hung up about that it s penalizing Home teams where the noise bothers visiting quarterbacks. Did you see the monday night game out of Buffalo when Denver s John Elway cried about the noise the ref appeased him by allowing the Broncos unlimited time to get off a play. That s called away Field advantage. On the local level Ramstein fans have been spanked for the Way they cheered at a recent air Force football game. Ramstein s base commander col. William Eckert did t like the fans cussing so he tackled them in print. There is no place on Ramstein where it is of to yell out obscenities Eckert said in last week s Kai american. Not in the theater at Burger King on the flight line and not at football games in front of other people s this football game had Ramstein crushing Rhein main 40-17 two sundays ago. Ramstein fans arc the largest and loudest As it is. Add the rams upsetting the defending Safe Champion rockets and the equation Isone jumping joint. Seems Eckert tried to sack the cussing problem in person Only to meet the fans version of an offensive Bucky Fox line. That sparked an Eckert supporter to comment in the american for those involved and you know who you arc the fact that you shouted profanity and obscenities at the referees opposing players and anyone else within earshot was bad enough. But what really concerns me As a senior no was the blatant disrespect and open Defiance shown to two of our senior officers and commander who intervened and resolved this leave it to rams Cin. The rams could run in a sequel to the dirty Call it the filthy fifty 45 players and five coaches who plow through mud and blood for their 3,000 loyalists. And win. The rams have won four Continental sports conference crowns and three Safe title this decade. Their 5-1 record this season is one of the Best in Europe. Since 1981, their Home record is 43 2. At one Point they won 33 straight at Home. They re working on another Home Streak of six straight. The secret Good players yes. And Good coach ing particularly the cutthroat Type like Bill Schultz the offensive coordinator who sneered after the Blowout of Rhein main "1 wanted to get at least 47 Points a the Board. As Long As they re Down keep them Down. They re not in our division and i want the championship game which leads to Ramstein s third secret its fans. They re the Best in Safe. They re loud obnoxious vicious exactly what a team needs to intimidate visitors. They re also filling the stands. As Eckert noted the rams arc drawing bigger crowds of fans this year and that s neat the team the team notices because the fans Are loud. They fire Oral salvos particularly the Yuk Yuk cheer All Day. What a contrast from up the autobahn where Sembach draws big silent crowds. Evidently Sembach s leadership frowns on the nah nah hey hey goodbye clincher. What do the tigers think this is the Continental Library conference Ramstein s leadership is Hung up about foul Mouths not loud Mouths. Eckert is a real fan As documented by his lineage he s the son of base Ball s fourth commissioner and by Ramstein s senior enlisted adviser. Chief master sgt. Thorn Lus Tik. Who confirms that he and Eckert attend All Ramstein football games. We love our rams believe me Lustik said in a phone interview this week. Lustik is smart enough to know this is no crisis. He rejects the idea of Banning Beer at Ramstein games. Most of our folks arc responsible enough to know their limit he said. We Don t want to Dampen the spirit. Profanity just does t have a place. The fans can be creative. They were last year. We want to develop an environment where everybody has a Good you can bet Hilburg won t have a Good time when it enters Ramstein s do sunday. But it sure beats taking on a soccer crowd. You want mean fans Check out these countries which were sanctioned this year by the International soccer federation Al Salvador. Fined 20,000 Swiss francs because crowd trouble made the referee Cut Short a game with Costa Rica. Kuwait. Fined 50,000 francs after missiles were thrown onto the Field during a game with the United Arab emirates. Cyprus. Fined 10,000 francs because players and refs were pelted with missiles after a game against Scotland. Spain. Fined 10,000 francs after spectators started fireworks at a game against Northern Ireland. United Stales. Fined 10,000 francs because supporters invaded the Field after a game with Costa Rica. Ethiopia. Fined 10,000 francs because spectators invaded the Field and attacked Malawi players. The federation s hit list goes on. Soccer s weird fans keep soiling their sport. Meanwhile Ramstein s football fans will simply make More noise.
