European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - December 30, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse R Patrick Ewig dominating presence Patrick Ewing made Georgetown a Champion. By Jimo Connell associated Pressw Hen the 1980s began Patrick Ewing was a Sophomore in High school who had Only been playing basketball for a couple of years. When the decade ended he had made his Mark on every level of the sport but nowhere 1 As profoundly As what he did for Georgetown the big East conference and College basketball. I did t Start improving and turning into a basketball i player until my freshman year in High school said1 Ewing a native of Jamaica who did t play the game until he came to the United states at age 11. That s when i started to realize i had a future in basketball at least in getting to College. I did t know i d get to this level but i m very Happy and pleased with what s How could he not be after College there was an olympic Gold medal in los Angeles. Then he was the top selection in the pro draft and eventually helped turn the new York kicks from Aba Doormat to division Champion. But it was in College where Ewing made a fashion statement no one else could have worn a Gray t shirt and White knee pads like that and showed a passion for personal Pride and team Success. In his four years at Georgetown 1981-85, the hoyas were in the Mcaa championship game three times and came away with one title. The Ewing Era meant a record of 121-23 and three 30-plus Victory seasons the Only ones in the school s history. He turned a budding program into a giant. Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt called Ewing s signing with Georgetown one of the three biggest events in the impressive first decade of the conference now considered the Best in College basketball. It was As if the giant from Cambridge mass., Rindge and latin High school arrived in Washington accompanied by a Savior status. I did t feel any Ewing said. My main concern was with Georgetown and my Job was to try to help Georgetown to win and make them As dominant As i could. People put pressure on you but it s up to you to either live up to those challenges or fall by the Wayside. Every time i went out there i did the Best i possibly he ended his four years with 2,184 Points 153 per game and 1,316 rebounds 9.2 per game. The numbers Are impressive but do Little to get across the Impact of Ewing s presence. He intimidated opponents on the floor and off. His handling by coach John Thompson added to the secretive Aura around him. Terms like Hoya paranoia became part of the sport s Lingo and people could t wait to watch Ewing and his teammates and Root passionately one Way or the other. There was no Middle ground. Asked which game he looks Back on with the most pleasure Ewing s face lights up with a smile As wide As his wingspan. Winning the National he said of the 84-75 Victory Over Houston in the kingdom in 1984. That was what we worked for All those Days Long hours Long nights. We finally reached the goal we set for were there disappointments Ewing smiled a look of Pride tinged with pain. I had two he said. The hoyas lost to North Carolina 63-62 for the title in his freshman year when another freshman Michael Jordan nailed one of the most often watched jumpers in tournament history. When Ewing was a senior it took the Best shooting game Ever in tournament play to give Villanova a 66-64 Victory. Three Points from two More titles. Ewing did emerge As a Winner again in his College career however when he stepped Forward to accept his Georgetown degree a moment he still says is his finest a fulfilment of his late Mother Dorothy s dream for her son. Ewing gave an answer Thompson would have been proud of when asked if there was one player or team he got himself ready for in his career. I got up for everybody he said. But naturally i played against Ralph Sampson and Akeem Olajuwon and those two were the big names in College basketball when i played no they weren t. Patrick Ewing was.
