That s the impression Dodds Germany sports coordinator Tom Leblanc gleaned when he attended the 20th annual National conference of High school athletic directors in Dallas right before the Christmas holidays. I walked away from the conference with an extremely positive feeling about the Dodds school system Leblanc Saip of his seminar experience. We really arc right with it in the Over All program we offer the kids in Germany. In Many cases we lag behind in terms of facilities and the num Ber of events scheduled for each sport. But we arc consistent in terms of academic eligibility academic All Confer ence All sports trophies selection of All Tom Leblanc conference and All tournament teams to mention a few areas. Many of the athletic directors i spoke with were unaware of the department of defense dependent schools. And they were envious of our Roaches and the Opportunity they have to pursue their careers and travel throughout Europe Leblanc continued. They also saw the Opportunity for our kids to com Pete against Host nation countries As a tremendous  three general sessions sports Medicine and Lega seminars and 25 workshops ranging from tips to the new and to Community support and assistance were offered at the four Day convention. Each workshop was offered Only once because every speaker and Moderator also was attending the program which attracted More than 1,200 High school athletic directors from All Over the ., As a participant. The ones in which Leblanc was most interested included contest administration Hall of Fame Community support and assistance How to make effective presentations and sportsmanship and coaching ethics. He also spent time in the vendors area Check ing the new equipment uniforms and awards. Attending the conference was a great experience Leblanc said. However he added that he was slightly Ben Abrams disappointed in the contest administration and Community support and assistance sessions. I thought the contest administration session would be at out better ways to conduct tournaments and championships. Instead it dealt mainly Wilh other things More concerned with the logistics of a program transportation officials fees Etc Etera he said. And the Community support and assistance project dealt with the development of sports teams from elementary school through the Junior High school tothe High school using the High school coach s system so that there would be continuity throughout an ath Lete s career. That of course could t work in Dodds because of military rotation. A coach Over Here can t plan ahead As far As  year let alone All through the  la Blanc also said that several coaches on the East coast offered to invite a boys and girls basketball team to compete in Christmas tournaments so that they could get stateside exposure. It was suggested that a reciprocal agreement could be arranged so that their teams could come to Germany. As of now Dodds does t Sanction such tournament Competition although it is permitted at no expense to the system. Leblanc said he told the inviting coaches that such participation would have to be approved by the directorate and that it would have to involve Complete military support from this Side because no school or individual could afford to undertake such a venture. Military officials Here in Europe have expressed a very Strong interest in getting More stateside expo sure for our athletes so their scholarship Opp Ortu Niles might be increased Leblanc said.
