European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 28, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Arm Landers dear Ann Landers yesterday after a couple of i hours of shopping my husband and i stopped at a Small cafe for a i Sandwich. I did t notice the i to can age Tad who was sitting at the next table until 1 heard him speak. He was Reading the menu to his Grandfather. It was apparent that the old gentleman had had a stroke. One Side of his face was distorted and his Eye was almost closed. The Young Man was very cheerful or dered two tuna salad sandwiches and two glasses of milk. One with a Straw when their orders arrived the old Man started to eat his Sandwich. He managed fairly Well but then he began to drool. The lad took his Napkin and Ever so tenderly wiped grandpa s Mouth. This went on throughout the entire lunch. The Young fellow kept up a Lively conversation laughing and talking to grandpa and mopping up the drools. When they got up to leave the boy gently helped his Grandfather out of his chair handed him his Cane look his Arm and they both walked slowly to the cashier s stand. I thought to myself. We hear so much about How badly behaved to can Agurs Are today. There is endless and wringing about their hair their clothes their. And their bad manners. How did this Young Man but to be so sensitive and caring so thoughtful no ind what made the difference can you explain it. Ann Landers it happened in Milwaukee dear Milwaukee i would Sty la must have been his parents. Someone at Home instilled in this lad at an Early age the importance of being respectful and kind to has elders. That boy is not unique. There Are millions of teen agers who Are kind and thoughtful. Believe me you will see them if you nuke an Effort to look beyond the hair in clothe and the music. Dear Ann Landers i need an objective opinion. Right now i m so angry i could Chew nails. This is what happened. For weeks i had been planning a dinner party to Honor my prospective in Laws from out of town. I wanted it to be picture perfect. I can scat 14 Comfort ably at my dining room table. Lou and i spent hours putting together the guest list. The party was last evening. The table was magnificent. I ordered special Lowers and imported candles. I spent three hours polishing the Silver. The guests were expected at 7 . At 5 o clock Harvey called. His wife would t be Able to make it but he would come alone if it s All a sudden illness nothing like that. Her cat died and she could t Stop crying. The cat. By the Way was 16 years old i insisted that Harvey come alone know ing it would Louse up my table. When i told Lou. He yelled. The woman is Ann. Am i justified in feeling that Annette let me Down right now i Don t think i la Ever invite her to a party again. Please let me know what you think. Spokane dear Spokane i Don t hate a cat. But i m certain that losing a much loved pet especially one who has been in the family fur Many years can be traumatic experience. An emotionally Strong woman would have dried her tars and honoured her commitment but apparently an Nette was t up to it. Try not to be so hard on her. But if she gels another cat i would inquire As to the cat s health before inviting her to any More seated dinners. Page 11 letters policy for family housing is explained i was so Happy to read that a family with two Chil Dren regardless of sex would finally be authorized a three bedroom apartment in government housing. My two daughters Ages 5 and 6, got so excited when i told them that they have already divided up their toys. Right now we Are stationed in bad kissing in West Germany and my children Are sharing a room 8x14, since this policy did not come out until this year. We Are now getting ready to move to Mainz. We will be there for another three years. My husband and i went to the housing office in Mainz a few weeks ago. The woman there told us that she knew nothing of this policy and we would Only get a two bedroom again. So we went to our housing office in bad Kissinger to get a copy of the policy letter. We found out that it is a voluntary program. My husband has been in the service for 12 years. We have been married for eight. Often 1 have had to won Der about the housing system. I have met a lot of couples most of them senior cos or officers who live in three bedroom places with Only one child or no children at All. I can t believe that rank should make a difference when it comes to housing but that is the Only answer i can come up with. Now i have to Tell my children that they will have to share one room again and play Between Beds and Clos ets for another three years. They will ask me Why and i am asking you is it because their daddy is Only an e-6, or that we Don t know the right people and arc not bold enough to slip somebody a s50 Bill when nobody is looking i feel that children no matter whether boy or girl need their own space just like we do. Please Tell me Why this is a voluntary program and Why some people get a three bedroom regardless of the number of Chil Dren or their sex. Marion papa bad Kissinger West Germany editor s note Rose Salem housing manager specialist housing division office of the Deputy chief of staff engineering he Usa eur replies your frustration regarding the number of bedrooms authorized for a family of four at your new duty station is recognized and understandable. Frankly it would give us most pleasure if we could House every family in Ever location throughout Usa eur with i bedroom for each child. However became of the shortage of govern ment housing in Many areas of Europe at ibis time and the number of families waiting in the states to join their sponsors that possibility is limited to very few areas. Commanders May authorize housing one bedroom per child based on the needs of the Community and the number of government housing available. Bad Kissinger fortunately is one of the areas where they have been Able to authorize one bedroom for each child without causing a significant imbalance of their waiting lists and hous ing inventory. This is not so in Mainz. The number of bedrooms which cos and officers Are allowed does vary for some specific military grades. There is also authorization to assign an additional bed room when excess quarters exist As Well As in cases of approved exceptions to policy. Regardless of the circumstances such assignments Are not made arbitrarily. Army regulation 210-50 and Usa eur supplement i to the a 210-50 housing regulation clearly identifies the rules which must be followed when housing assignments Are made. Copies of the housing regulations Are available at your local hous ing office. It is not Likely that drastic changes in the availability of government housing will occur in the near future therefore we cannot offer More encouragement. You May wish however to Contact your housing referral office for information concerning the government rental housing program grip. Grip is a program of government leasing of housing with Many benefits for the Soldier and family. Racial prejudice not limited Reader says when i was growing up i naively believed that America had already settled Inlo a color Blind coexistence and tolerance. While learning history. I concluded that or. Martin Luther King or s efforts to achieve integration were 100 percent successful and that it must have been an easy task. So i shrugged that part of history off. Now by coincidence that it should be occurring All at once people who i Sec every Day have absolutely floored me by expressing their Black White prejudice. Maybe i just was t looking for it. The need to Tell about a situation where a Black person or White person did whatever Dum founds me since the race of the person had no bearing what Soever on the conversation and did not contribute to whatever that person when i went to the Chapel Celebration of Martin Luther King or s birthday i was still surprised to Sec Only three to five Whites there at Best. I have seen prejudice in both Black and while now. It s not limited to one Side but where were the Whites in this Case maybe they had preconceived ideas of what it would be like or maybe they thought it was time they could put to better use. Well this is what it was like. It was peaceful warm and positive. Only kindness and optimism were preached. Was my time put to Good use i thought since i did t feel any prejudice that i understood. Now i think i need o understand a Little bit More. Maybe there will be a better turnout next time. After All. It s not benefiting just one race.
