Considered by the coaches by far the Best of the offensive linemen. Bubba Paris 77 29, 8th year. Michigan. Second round. 1982. 6-7, 348pounds. Only Large offensive lineman too Large and he knows  says offensive line coach Bobb Mckittrick. Benched for being overweight by Bill Walsh last season has been re instated by Scifert and now plays first and third quarters alternating at left tackle with Steve Best Paris Wallace his Friend. Running backs Roger Craig 33 29, 7th year Nebraska second round 1983. 6-0, 224 pounds. After being named the nil s offensive player of the year in 1988, when he was third in the league with a san Francisco re Cord 1.502 Yards and tied for nil Lead with 2,036 combined Yards he slipped this  gained 1,054 Yards and caught Craig 49 passes for 475 More. Capped that with 125 Yards in 18 carries in 41-13playoff win Over Minnesota and added 94 Yards in 24 carries in 30-3 win Over rams in pfc title game. Tom Rathman 44 27, 4th year Nebraska third round 1986. 6-1, 232 pounds. Used mainly As a Blocker his first three seasons emerged As a receive with 73 catches this season taking Load off Craig. Second leading rusher with 305 Yards he gained 63 Yards in 10 car Ries in pfc title game against rams. Defense ends Pierce Holt 78 28. 2nd year. An Oclo state. 2nd round 1988, 6-4, 280pounds. Was a construction worker for four years after playing just one year of High school football As 180-Pound tackle. Entered College at age 22. Spent first half of Rookie season on injured reserved with broken toe then became starter this year. Tied for team Lead this year with Lovi sacks including four against new York giants that earned him pfc defensive player of the week honors. He s one of the quickest linemen we have and one of the hardest workers says defensive line coach John  Roberts 91 26, 4th year. Alabama 2nd round 1986. 6-3, 275 pounds. A starter last season when he had six sacks lost Job to Holt after hold 26, 4th year Pagan by the season ing out and is now used primarily in pass Rushing situations. Kevin Fagan 75 Miami Fla. 4th round. 1986, 6-4, j 265 pounds. Was considered to Prospect but a risk because of knee in jury that kept Himon injured Reserve Rookie season. Be came a starter last season and is considered the Best run stopper in the line. Held out this year but was starting opener. Nose tackles Michael Carter 95 29, 6th year. Southern methodist 5th round 1984, 6 2, 295 pounds. Olympic Silver medallist in shot put in 1984, was All pro nose tackle and pro Bowler in 1987 and 1988 but missed second half of the season with broken foot sustained in the eighth game against the new York jets. Returned for limited action in pfc title game. One of the game s strongest men he also is to bile for size. Expected to see limited action because of injury. Pete Kugler 67 30. 7lh nil year Penn state 6th round. 1981, re signed As free agent after Usel folded in 1986. 6 3. 255 pounds. Had he not jumped Tousel after the 1982 season and missed 1984 championship would be the sixth 49cr playing in his fourth super bowl. Usually plays weak Side and was used in pfc championship game to Turner Chuck then cover wide receivers. Charles Haley 94 26, 4lh year James Madison. 4th round 1986. 6-5, 230 pounds. Tied Holt for team Lead in sacks with Lovi although role was reduced somewhat from 1988, when he was full time starter and made pro  time with Danny Stubbs 96 and Bill Romanowski 53who also spells Turner. Inside linebackers malt Millen 54 31, 10th year. Penn state free agent. 1989 2nd round,1980. Raiders. 6-2. 245. Signed with 49ers. Who won a bidding War with dozen other teams after the raiders Cut the former All pro. Almost immediately became a Leader off the Field and did outstanding Job starting in place of the injured Riki Ellison particularly against the run. Played with raiders super bowl winners of 1980 and 1983. Michael Walter 99 29, 7th year Oregon free agent. 1984 2nd round Dallas 1983. 6-3, 238 pounds. A starter since 1985, led the team in Griffin tackles for the second straight year with 103 85 Solo and 18 assists. One of the Stead Iest players on the team but under publicized on a defense that takes a Back scat to a superstar Laden offence. Played against John Elway in College and says i always seemed to be chasing him. I think i need eyes in the Back of my head to Stop  cornerback Don Griffin 29 25. 4th year. Mid dle Tennessee state 6th round 1986. 6-0, 175 pounds. An instant starter in his Rookie year he s consid ered one of the league s most underrated players. Had just two interceptions because teams threw away from him. Also re turns punts on of  Pollard 26 25. 3rd year. Weber state free agent 1987, 5-11. 187 pounds. Got his Job with the 49ers strike replacement team. Cut and re leased in 1988, then re signed and be came a starter when Tim Mckyer pulled a Groin. Kept his Job through Mckyer injury and suspension this year and has been picked on regularly. Tim Mckyer 22 26. 4ih year. Texas Arlington 3rd round. 1986. 6-0. 174 pounds. An instant starter with grif Fin is considered team s Best Man to Man coverage player. But holdouts Groin injury and outspoken nature have gotten him into trouble with management he was suspended for two games this year. Scifert however went out of his Way to Praise him after an interception against the rams in the pfc title game. Safeties Ronnie Lott 42 30, 9lh year. Us 1st round 1981, 6 0, 200 pounds. One of three rookies in secon Dary on 1981 superbowl team along with Eric Wright 21now a Nickle Back. Unquestioned Leader of the de sense. Our Joe Montana on de sense Scifert says. Lott switched from car Norback to safety in1986 without a hitch and has been All pro and pro Bowler at both positions going to his eighth this year. Led team with 5 regular season interceptions and returned one 58 Yards for a touchdown in 41-13 playoff win Over Minnesota. Chel Brooks 31 24. 2nd  am 11 the round 1988. 5-11,191 pounds. Took Over at Strong safety when Jeff Fuller was lost with a career ending neck injury. Dedicated his season to Ful Ler and wore Fuller s name and number on his shoes. Coaches say he has played As Well As Fuller for whom they were predicting a pro bowl season. Special teams Mike Cofer 6. The placekicker. Made All pro after g9ing 29 for 36 on Field goals this year including 19 of 20 inside the 40. However missed two Field goals and extra Point against Minnesota which Scifert blamed on High snaps from Thomas. Punter Barry Helton had aver age of 40.5 and net of just 31.5. But coaches says he had a Good year because he was often poaching from inside opponents  Flagler 32 and Spencer till Man 23 handle kickoffs each averaging Over 20 Yards a return. Taylor who had a 95-Yard punt return last year averaged11.6 with a Long of 37 in 199
