Elena on Christmas Day Are lading fast confusion is gaming a foothold elections Are scheduled for May 20, but Man people Aren l certain How democracy works citizens Ary befuddled by the number of new political parties that have sprung up since Ceausescu s death one recent newspaper cartoon poked fun at the dilemma two snowmen Broomsticks in hand and top hats on their Heads arc pictured talking let us form a party too one says to the other other citizens Are distrustful of the National salvation front the caretaker government established in late december to  Romania into a new Era of democracy rumours abound that communist sympathizers and men Vith ties to Ceausescu have important positions in the group in late january the front complicated matters by announcing it would Field a slate of candidates in May s elections instead of remaining Neutral As it first promised the news set off a series of demonstrations in Bucharest and other cities pro front and anti front crowds held rallies opposition parties charge that the front is out to grab Power and crush democracy before it gets off the ground that claim persists despite a recent move by Romania s leadership to share Power on an interim basis with other parties in a newly organized provisional Council of National Unity the highly charged political debate can be heard daily from one end of the Square in Timisoara to the other. In the Shadow of the National theater building where hundreds died in december s lighting Small groups of men gather to argue the merits of this or that party.
