European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 7, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a privileges of nato shoppers discuss Dann Landers dear Ann Landers look closely at the enclosed and for decaffeinated Tea and you will see that every one of the nurses photographed in this Hospital maternity Ward in Stamford conn., have stethoscopes handling from their necks. In my opinion they Wear these instruments to make the statement a they look at me. In a a Loose stethoscopes can be dangerous. I wonder How Many babies in that Stamford Hospital have been hit in the head by dangling stethoscopes. Why can to nurses keep their instruments in their pockets or at their station until they need them How Many times during the Day does a nurse use a Stethoscope anyway please see what you can do to get these Dames to put away their stethoscopes until they need them. If they want to look like professionals they ought to Start wearing Caps again. A a Virginia Reader dear Virginia i thought that after 34 years of writing this column i had seen everything but this is a new one. I have never heard of anyone being injured by a nurses Stethoscope. If i have missed something i Hope my readers will let me know. Dear Ann Landers three months ago our 21-year-old daughter was abducted by two men As she was walking from the Library to her College dormitory late at night. She was blindfolded tied up and driven to a wooded area where she was beaten and raped. After several hours her abductors turned her Loose on a deserted country Road. A a Paula has since become Active in a program called a take Back the this is a group that fights violent crimes committed against women ranging from sexual assault to murder. Several months ago she persuaded her father a retired army Ranger to buy her a handgun for Protection. For Christmas he gave her a .38-caliber revolver which she carries in her purse or tucked in the Belt of her jeans. I have no doubt that Paula would not hesitate to shoot and kill any Man who tried to Mug or rape her. I have told her several times that i am opposed to people carrying guns for Protection. She says i am naive and unrealistic and that several of her girlfriends at school also carry guns. Ann i worry More about her carrying that gun than i worry about her getting raped again. What is your opinion a a concerned Parent in St. Louis dear St. Louis i m with you. There Are already far too Many guns out there. Witness the fact that guns were the no. 4 cause of death in the United states last year. In 1988, four times As Many people died from gunshot wounds in Washington ., than in the entire country of Japan. Statistics show that the proliferation of firearms has not decreased the number of muggings or rapes it has Only increased the number of shootings of innocent people. The Best Way to avoid being mugged or raped is to travel in groups and stay off dark isolated streets at night a campuses included. Carry a police whistle at All times. Keep car doors locked and do not get out of the car at night for any reason. Men who cause rear end collisions with Lone female Drivers and then drag them off have been reported All Over the country. Caution is the watchword. The woman who heeds this advice will fare much better than one with a gun. C creators Syndicate maintaining Good German american relations is an important Issue for us military personnel stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany. I feel that i have taken Good measures in keeping it that Way. My husband has shown me the German customs and foods. We live a True half German half american Way of life. For example when we go shopping we done to just Stop at the commissary we also visit the neighbourhood mini mall. More often than not we see other americans also taking advantage of the local facility. My question is. Why is it that when nato personnel come into the commissaj7, they re allowed to literally wipe out an entire Section at a time its not uncommon to see these people with shopping carts full of hamburger and steaks. As i picked out our Christmas Turkey the German Soldier next to me dumped four Butterball into his cart. It leads me to believe that these people Are doing a Good Friend a a Little innocent Favory that nobody will find out about. Done to these people realize How much it affects those who rely solely on the commissary for their food obviously there is a regulation somewhere that allows nato personnel to shop in our facilities but can to it be controlled to some reasonable amount in a not saying that there Are not american personnel who exhibit great excesses in their shopping habits nor that unless you have been lost in a Cave for the past several months you Are probably aware of the slash in funding for the armed services. Budget cutting Means a certain amount of sacrifice from everyone. There is a sacrifice we All can make. A sacrifice that results in rewards. What is it Energy conservation. Is saving Energy really sacrificing anything though give it some serious thought. In a sure you will agree that it is not. Energy conservation is the opposite of Energy waste. Does that Radiator really need to be at its highest setting what about the lights on in that unoccupied room Are you using a space Heater for additional Comfort when wearing a Light sweater would do just As Well idling your vehicle military or privately owned wastes fuel and pollutes the air. These Are some of the most common examples of Energy waste yet they Are the easiest to fix. Will you be sacrificing anything by saving Energy of course not. Energy conservation is common sense not sacrifice. Now that we be determined that saving Energy is Only common sense thinking lets talk about the re every nato person shops in this manner. However it is painfully obvious when four out of every five nato personnel in the commissary walk up to the Register with a shopping cart full of nothing but meat and cigarettes. A spec. Army troop support Agency european commissary Region replies in some geographical areas and under certain conditions some nato personnel Are authorized to shop in . Military commissaries. Authorized nato customers have the same privileges and Are subject to the same limitations As . Commissary customers. These include the right to Purchase anything in the store and a prohibition on Selling or giving away merchandise bought in the commissary. We cannot place a limitation on what these or any other customers Purchase. German customs officials periodically maintain surveillance of commissaries and investigate any suspicious activity on the part of . And nato customers. If a customer is found to have circumvented the Law he May be criminally prosecuted. We understand your concern and assure you that actions Are taken against customers whose violations of Law come to the attention of the proper officials. Wards it can bring. Obviously saving tax dollars is a Reward itself. Taxes used to pay Utility Bills would be better spent on training. There Are other rewards however that can be enjoyed by everyone in the Community. What arc they they arc rewards of Money Given to communities with effective Energy savings programs. Several communities in the Wurzburg area have enhanced the Quality of life for their soldiers civilians and family members with projects funded by Energy savings programs.
