European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 8, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and Stripe slanders dear Ann Landers in a 32. My Mother is fighting breast cancer. Her family has a very High incidence of this Type of malignancy. Mother has had two mastectomies. Two of her Sisters and three of my maternal cousins have had mastectomies. Whenever i take my Mother to her doctor he tells me that i have a 50 percent Chance of getting breast cancer. Two of my doctors have told me the same thing. All a have said the Only sure Way to prevent this from happening is to have All the breast tissue removed and implants put in. They say this could be done in one surgical procedure. My question to you Ann should 1 do it what Side effects would there be if any would these implants last the rest of my life the older i get the More i worry about breast cancer. I have mammograms and breast ultrasounds annually. So far so Good. I have had several benign tutors removed but until the Biopsy reports came Back from the lab i was a nervous wreck. Please give me some advice. 1 done to know what to do. A Schenectady . Dear Schenectady 1 spoke with or. Samuel Hellmann Dean of the medical school at the University of Chicago who is an authority on this subject. This is what or. Hellmann said the family history if accurate indicates that this woman does indeed have a 50-50 Chance of getting breast cancer. Whether or not to have the surgery is a judgment Call. A prime Factor is the amount of anxiety she is experiencing. If your correspondent is deeply concerned and it is making her miserable the operation would put an end to the worrying. Her surgeon should of course remove nipples As Well As the breast tissue in order to ensure that there be no place for cancer to grow As for the implants yes they should last a lifetime. A dear Ann Landers my husbands Mother is living with us because she is no longer Able to live alone and take care of herself she has one other son but his wife refuses to do anything to relieve the Burden of caring for this woman. I am writing concerning the cafes autobahn shop Pette and what i feel is its encouragement of drinking and driving. I must first commend the military and an for continually making our Community aware of the problem of drinking and driving through Public service announcements. I do feel though that people arc getting a double message when alcoholic beverages arc readily available at the autobahn shop Pette. Many times i have seen Drivers leaving the shop Pette with open containers of Beer and getting behind the wheel of their cars. Sure. I realize that some people drive out to the shop Pette for some groceries and want to include a six pack or a bottle of wine. I think that cafes. By Selling ice cold a or is in cd urging drinking and driving. The Beer will be warm by the time you get Home so when do they expect someone to drink it while they re driving that s when All last summer cafes had a sales gimmick for Selling wine coolers at the autobahn shop Pette. Single ice cold bottles were displayed in a cooler for everyone to Sec. And on those hot Days it sure was tempting to Down a cold one. This was not for people to take Home this was to drink immediately Why else was it ice cold y too Many innocent people die because of drunk Drivers. We All have the right to feel Safe when we Are driving on the highways with our families and friends. I would like cafes to explain to your read ers Why it appears that they arc encouraging the behaviour of drinking and driving. A name withheld Frankfurt West Germany editors note a master sgt. Dayton p. Strickland customer relations he cafes Europe. Replies f the problem with drinking and driving is not with outlets that sell alcoholic beverages it s with the people who get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle drunk. Y our allegation that cafes encourages drinking and driving is ice cold. Cafes does not condone drinking and driving. We Are simply trying to offer a Standard and requested service by stocking refrigerated Beer and w Ine coolers. A there Are Many reasons a person could desire to Purchase a cold Beer or wine cooler that would not result in the Driver of a vehicle drinking the product. Be have tour buses that use the autobahn shop Pette and we also have a Large number of customers who live close enough to the store that their drink would still be cold when they got Home. If you Are close enough to see someone pop open a brew sky and jump into his Gog Mobile then you re fit sit no ukr see tic dense plate number and Call the maps. I m concerned enough to do that and believe you Are too. Anyway we share your concern but believe continued education is the key to halt this senseless Slaughter on the highways. While most of the article is medical la Correct recipes that were included May be counter Active to the cholesterol lowering effects associated with soluble fiber such As dried Beans. Dried Beans and peas Oats and oat bran arc Good sources of soluble fiber. The formation of a gel produced by soluble fiber in the Small intestinal tract is thought to entrap dietary nutrients he acc. Delaying the absorption of these nutrients. Since soluble fiber works on dietary nutrients those nutrients known to be associated with increasing blood cholesterol Levels need to be consumed in Small amounts. Research has shown that it is not so much the amount of cholesterol eaten but More the amount of fat eaten that contributes to raising blood cholesterol Etyc a therefore for a diet High in soluble fiber to be effective in reducing blood cholesterol Levels it should be consumed in conjunction with a Low fat diet especially saturated fat. The recipes provided in the article included significant amounts of saturated fat to include smoked Ham Hock Salt pork and butter.
