European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters # writer says some people never learn the other Day while i was at the Exchange i spotted a senior no with his hat on. This was the Opportunity i had waited for since nah Latina from the no Academy. There they dished those dumb notions i had about being reluctant .0 Point out the mistakes of my superiors. In fact they made it Clear to me that it was my duty to do this. Now i finally had the Chance to prove to myself and i took full advantage of it. I confronted him then and there purposely raising my voice to give it that air of authority while i cited afr 35-10 requirements to him. Of course that Drew a lot of attention and everyone looked at us. No doubt they were shocked by this violation and were glad that i was doing something about it. They probably wished that they had the guts to do the same thing. A few Young airmen were even enjoying the scene judging from their giggles but the senior no looked uncomfortable. Man his face turned As red As the russian lag but it serves him right. It was his own fault that he was being held up for ridicule. He should have known better. After All this sort of thing is serious. Anyway he tried to hand me a line about How he had just come through the door and had t had a Chance to remove his hat but i Wasny to buying it. He was being too polite which meant that he was guilty As hell. He tried to get by me by saying that he was a Liaison Between the office management and finance offices and now that i had stopped him he was late for a meeting. I told him that this was More important though and counselled him on his responsibility to set a Good example. He listened courteously but i think that was because everyone was still watching. There were so Many people by this time in fact that it Surprise me if word of my Diligence got Back to my commander. I really taught him though. He was so embarrassed that he even forgot what he came for. I did no to think much of him As an no however because he did t even compliment me for correcting him the Way they do in the stories you hear at the Academy. Well it was no great loss since afterwards i went Back to my work Center and had a great time telling everyone about the experience. 1 expected them to really Admire me. But i guess most people arc just jealous of my dedication because they have been avoiding me lately. But that s no big problem. At least i can say that i do a Good Job which is More than i can say for those people at finance. My last two paychecks have been All screwed up for some mysterious reason. Those Yoyos at the finance management office could use some pointers too. Because of some crazy mix up they sent my household goods to Moscow. How could something like that happen with the experience these people have you would think that they could avoid these mistakes. I guess its like my dad used to say though a some people never of Well tomorrow ill have to jump on some of those pilots for putting unauthorized creases in their Garrison Caps. A Bill Larson Brindisi Italy Ann Landers dear Ann Landers in response to your answer concerning the father who was unfaithful and the Mother who tolerated it my parents have been married 52 years. For at least 50 of those years my father has been unfaithful. He has had at least three Long term women friends. Father always slept at Home but i never remember him having dinner with us or attending a school function. He never took my Mother anyplace. Sis and i grew up to be reasonably decent and productive. Obviously our Mother did something right but she also made us a Little crazy. I can never recall a time when i did no to have the feeling that a something is wrong it has taken Many years of counselling and More hard work than anything in be Ever done. I raised three teen agers alone and graduated from Law school at 35.1 now realize that i was t nutty. It was my Mother. She kept telling us that everything was wonderful when it was really pretty awful. My father ignored me. Which is the worst kind of child abuse. When you re treated As a nonentity there is nothing to react to. You feel like a nothing. Sometimes i still do. If my Mother would have said just once. Quot your father is a Louse but for reasons of my own. I choose to live with it would have been healthier. Instead to this Day she wants me to think that father is wonderful. The Man never hugged me never said. Quot i love in fact lie never said a i like is that wonderful yes. In a angry. But it s taken me 44 years to get that Way. Its pretty amazing that i m not crazier than i am. So let the lady be angry and let her Tell her children that she s angry and Why. Better that than train them to deny feelings. My Mother worked like a Demon trying to paper Over the garbage in my father s life and she did us no favor. A Nashville dear Nashville children who grow up receiving mixed messages which you surely did Are bound to be confused. Apparently your Mother thought her life and yours would be less stressful if she kept the family together. Her big mistake was trying to con you kids. Children Are always More hip than parents suspect. I hey have an uncanny ability to figure things out As you have so poignantly testified. Thanks for writing. Dear Ann Landers thank you for saving my life. This is not a nut letter and i done to go to Yale. The Bank i work for gave Christmas Candy at its annual Holiday party. When i got Home. I tossed a piece of Candy into my Mouth. The phone rang and i ran to answer it. The Candy got stuck in my Throat. I talk or breathe and i was scared to death. My wife heard me gasping for air and came running from the Kitchen. She had read about the Heimlich Man Euver in your column and remembered exactly what to do. She got behind me and pressed hard on my Chest. The Candy popped right out. So Here is a belated thanks to you and the press Etc Prisc Riverside Calif for printing that column. A Arthur k.
