European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Tears for fears the British duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith have become known As one of the Best studio production acts in pop music. But can the pair Cut the Mustard live the answer from Friday night s concert in Frankfurt West Germany is an emotional yes but it could have been better. One of the Strong Points of the show was the duos backup band. The group was an ethnic Rainbow of performers with singers Adele Bertei a dead ringer for the eurythmics Annie Lennox and jamaican born cornrows Laden Biti Strauchn Andy Davis on keyboards synthesizers Organ and computer Carol Steele an afro cuban Conga Queen who plays the meanest bongos since Sheila e. And Oleta Adams on grand piano. Adams is the soul Singer with the gospel style voice whom Orzabal and Smith recently discovered in a Kansas City bar. They added her to the lineup to get More feeling and depth in their music. It works. Rounding out the group were Jim Copley on Drums Neil Taylor the guitar Man who played the memorable Solo on the 1985 hit everybody wants to Rule the world and William Gregory on baritone sax and electronic clarinet. The stage show was simple a no lasers costume changes or smoke machines. Just Blue Green Orange red and yellow lights bathing the stage. Adams and Orzabal won Over the audience Early with a Welcome speech in German then struck the right chords with the recent hit woman in chains. They next gave advice for the Young at heart from the new release the seeds of love a different tone the recorded version has an easy listening flair but it took on a dance feel in concert when the fans arms raised clapped to the beat and Sang the lyrics. Adams showed off her powerful voice and virtuosity on the Ivory keys with the blues classic if i could t sing my song. The song in t on any tears for fears recording but it should be if the group Ever releases a live album. Orzabal joined the backup singers on this one and they were greeted with a three minute ovation afterwards. Bad Man s song the nine minute opus from the seeds of love gave the band a Chance to show off. Steele killed the congas Bertei and Strauchn kicked in with hot vocals while Adams on the piano and Orzabal played off each other. Quot and now a song unlike any you be Ever heard Quot Orzabal announced before kicking into the new pop masterpiece sowing the seeds of love. This was a beatle esque audio visual tour de Force with a blazing Sun on a red backdrop. The live song was amazingly faithful to the studio version a a Complex layering of opera horns organs voices special effects and More that s difficult to reproduce outside the studio. The duo confirmed the beatles tribute with a cover of All you need is love. With everybody rules the world it was party time. The song had the crowd stomping and clapping. Tears for fears used their biggest hit for the finale but this version of the 1985 smash shout ended with a twist a Strauchn rapid rapped the lyrics of sowing the seeds to the band s shout music. Strange unexpected a but interesting. Tears for fears lost the audience on two songs from their debut album 1983 s the hurting possibly because the album came out before the Young fans in Frankfurt were old enough to remember it. The video to song from the big chair featured two better songs from this album the title track and memories fade. They probably would have worked better in concert.
