European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 24, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 24 a a the stars and stripes saturday March 24,1990 outdoor adventures no Boring Hunting with wild boar i recently wrote about my first successful wild boar Hunt and noted the Basic Steps and precautions taken after the shooting of Cloven Hoof game. There arc 10 a after the shot rules that make Good sense especially on Hunts for red Deer and wild boar. These were passed to me by a Friend and have been publicized fairly Well in the German Hunting world. Some of the rules apply to the use of Hunting dogs but arc still Good to remember even if you done town a dog. 1. If the animal does no to fall when you shoot but disappears in the Brush the thing to do is stay Calm wait quietly and quickly recall everything you can about the shot. For example remember the sight picture the Point of aim the trigger squeeze and the animals movement just after the shot. These things May provide helpful clues during the coming search. 2. If you think there is a Small Chance the animal is Only wounded do not go immediately to the place where it was standing when you shot. An animal badly wounded could suddenly flee from fright if you approach it. Then the search could become difficult or impossible. In the Case of a wounded wild boar the animal might attack you. 3. If you hear the animal coughing or thrashing in the Brush do not pursue stay away. Return to your vehicle and done to go Back for at least two hours. If its evening wait until the next morning to continue your search. A Well trained Hunting dog should be used to help find the game. 4. When adequate Light is available you must eventually Check the area where the animal was shot. Do not initiate an extensive search on your own. You could disturb the animals Trail and Render a follow on search with a dog difficult or impossible. 5. Done to search for wounded game after dark. 6. During the search look for clues such As color of blood bits of hair pieces of Bone or flesh and connect these with what you remember about the Point of aim at the moment of the shot. Light or pinkish coloured blood usually Means a lung shot. If that a the Case you May also find bits of lung fiber on the ground. Lung shots Are normally fatal. Dark blood Means a flesh wound. Medium red blood could be from a heart shot. All of the signs together can suggest whether the animal you Are looking for is dead or Only wounded. 7. When using a dog begin from the Point where the animal was hit and avoid starting the search immediately after a warm Trail especially if nth animals were nearby. Some professional Huzi wait up to four hours before starting a search with dog. This is a precaution against picking up the of another animal that was in the same area and fun at the time of the shot a 8. Dogs Are kept on a Leash during the search the dog May be let off the Leash after an extensive search and you find a a warm wound bed a an area where it appears the animal has recently rested and left blood that is still fresh. There Are three situations however where the dog should be kept on the Leash at this Point and not released. Those being cases where the animal has just been seen jumping in during the search and running further. Another Case is when the animal has been hit with a High or grazing shot that is not fatal. And the third situation is when the animal has been shot in the Mouth. Letting the dog run free could prolong and further complicate the search under these circumstances. 9. In situations when you find no blood or other signs and assume you missed completely a search should still be initiated. Do not conclude you missed until you have examined the area thoroughly. Sometimes the first blood signs Are As far As 100 meters away. 10. Remember that if you shoot an animal you have the obligation to find it. Waidman Sheil.
