She insists that 1 am in a state of denial and tells me i should get counselling at have always dreaded becoming senile and i believe with All my heart that the Good lord is doing me a big favor. Do you think i am strange for feeling this Way i done to want to be on any life support machines nor do 1 want to be Given any medication that will interfere with the Normal course of my illness. How can i make certain that my wishes will be respected thank you for whatever help you can give me. You have been such a Good Friend for so Many years please done to fail me now. A East coast Reader dear East coast i do not think you Are crazy. In fact you sound like a very sensible woman. I too have read about instances where the Law has overridden the wishes of both the patient and the family and forced artificial feeding on individuals who were brain dead or in a vegetative state. Too few people know they can protect themselves against such bar arianism. The american bar association put together a splendid brochure that is being distributed by the american association of retired persons. Send a postcard for a free copy of a health care Powers of attorney brochure d13895. The address is Harp dept. Hupa 1909 k St. N.w., Washington . 20049. The material goes beyond instructions for a living will and offers additional Protection against what you fear. Good Luck and god bless. 1 urge All my readers who have this concern to Send for this brochure and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you will be in control of your final Days. Dear Ann Landers my children have three pet hamsters. They Are devoted to these Little creatures. A a Todd age 12 read something in the paper that moved him to tears. The kids Are eager to know what Ann Landers thinks of this and so am i. Here a the Story a family in Salem ore., had a pet Hamster named Bud. Hamsters Are supposed to live to be about 2 years old. Bud however was 4 and getting decrepit. The Mother was advised by someone at the pet store to put the animal to sleep by placing him in the Freezer. She wrapped Bud in a cloth put him in a paper bag and stuck it in the Freezer. The next morning the Mother opened the door of the Freezer and out fell Bud. He stood up on his Hind legs and seemed to look accusingly into the eyes of the woman who had placed him there. She was shocked. Bud had chewed through the sack and dined All night on the goodies he found around him. He seemed to be in Fine condition none the worse for his ordeal. The children were thrilled to see their Little Friend alive and Well. They All agreed that they would let Bud live out his years and not Rush things. What do you think of a Mother who would do such a thing a Antioch Calif. Dear Antioch the Mother showed poor judgment when she checked with the pet store. She should have consulted a veterinarian who would have told her to take the Hamster to the humane society to be put to sleep. Ally a Well that ends Well however and i too am glad that Bud made it. A reason for Deros delays explained in order for the government to save Money it is penalizing its troops. Servicemen who were due to leave in june or july now must wait until August september or even october. Let us not forget that these servicemen who Are affected by this brainstorm also have families. Our family is ready to leave Europe. We have been ready and have counted every Day for our departure. Even criminals when sentenced to do time in prison Are eligible for an Early release. Its called time off for Good behaviour. We endured an unfortunate assignment in the Netherlands and struggled to recover from the devastating experience. The Only reprieve was that we would leave Europe Early in the summer of 1990. That would be the perfect time to Settle in and finally add some stability to our lives. A most important fact is that the children would be Able to begin school at the Normal time. To All you critics who done to know All my family has endured for the Sake of our husband father and especially for the Sake of the United states air Force please done to judge a situation you know nothing about. We be had enough. In fact in a mad As hell but i still have to take it some More. Or. Major Ramstein West Germany editors note a col. Terry d. Stevens Deputy chief special assignments division directorate of assignments he air Force military personnel Center Randolph fab Texas replies the highest priority we placed in solving our budget deficit problem was to keep the Impact on our people to an absolute minimum. With this in mind we extended the fewest number of people for the shortest period of time possible a none for longer than eight weeks and none past september. The program moved folks with june and july Deros Date of return from overseas to August and those with August Deros to september. This action was specifically designed to reduce the Impact on families with school age children As most conus Continental United states schools do not begin until september. Please realize that in working the budget deficit Issue our senior air Force leadership opted not to freeze All pcs permanent change of station assignments for an extended period of time involuntarily separate thousands of Young enlisted and officer personnel deny new but unfunded entitlements such As double dislocation allowance for pcs moves increased flight pay medical bonuses and increases in enlisted try temporary duty per diem rates. We have to Date also been Able to avoid More severe actions such As promotion freezes and deeper cuts in accessions programs. Notwithstanding the above we do understand How you feel about your family being involuntarily extended. We also regret your feelings about your assignment. We will consider reinstating your husbands original Deros if our actions have caused your family undue hardship a greater than others in a similar situation. Your husbands Capo consolidated base personnel office can advise him on application procedures. While this May not be the answer you desired the actions taken to address the budget deficit were meticulously Laid out to keep the a a Hurt a to our people to the absolute minimum. We believe we be been Able to do that. Speech on Iran rang True a in ironic Way when president a Sfanjani of Iran heard that president Bush answered a phony Telephone Call purporting to be from him it made his Day. He gloated and rejoiced Over our embarrassment in a Sermon to the iranian people. I read excerpts from his Sermon and it made my Day. I found the Sermon to be highly edifying for it rang True in an ironic sense. I agree with president a Sfanjani that a a Iran a stature in the world is Iran is first in crime and first in barbarity. What other nation while condemning terrorism puts out a contract on a novelist with whom it does not agree what other nation gloats Over innocent people held hostage unfortunately a the United states very much needs pen pals to talk to Iran a As president a Sfanjani boasts and that is because Iran is held in reverence among the hoodlums who have kidnapped our people. Eight americans languish in Captivity and Iran it is believed holds the key to their release. President a Sfanjani is proud of that key and lie flatters Iran for possessing it. I further agree with president a Sfanjani that it is a a strange occurrence a that president Bush must answer Crackpot Telephone Calls in an attempt to communicate with Iran. But How does one communicate with a country which has removed itself far beyond the Pale of civilized nations a Mark s. Atterberry Mannheim West Germany i m 20 years old.
