Famed poet Rainer Maria Rilke also spent much time in Wor swede which is about 16 Miles North of Bremen. Wor swede Long a Mecca for Art lovers and tourists boasts 15 Art galleries Art lessons for amateurs pricey boutiques cafes souvenir shops hawking everything from incense to neckties and an astrologer who also gives vacation tips. West German news Media have described it As a place where Quot Art and tackiness  Wellbrock says Many tourists expect a close encounter with artistic geniuses. Quot there is this naive idea that anyone can go see How the artists work. But these artists Don t see themselves As being like their works As exhibition  Otto sculpting at Home told an interviewer that he does not feel treated by intrusive tourists. His House concealed by thick Bushes is on a Back Road Hill overlooking Wor swede Center and there is no sign to indicate that it s the Home of a famous artist. Quot Wor swede is such a Good place to work because it still has a lot of its Small town qualities Quot said Otto. Quot artists have been Here for 100 years. The residents Are used to being around crazy  Wor swede was just an Anonymous Little farming Village in the North German Moorland until three artists took up residence in 1889. Fritz Mackensen Otto Modersohn and Hans am ende were mesmerized by the Beauty of the Wor swede Countryside and recreated it on Canvas. Others followed like Becker who married Modersohn in 1901. Heinrich Vogeler one of Germany s Best known Art Nouveau practitioners went to Wor swede in 1893 and moved into a palatial residence called the Burkenhoff. It was the scene of evening song fests artistic discussions open air plays and readings by Rilke. It is now practically a shrine for tourists
