European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 4, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Theann Landers dear Ann Landers. The letter from a a screw i Oose in Iowa a the woman who was addicted to a Richard a hit me Between the eyes. Story is about Cross addiction. I was completely addicted to a Linda a and she was totally hooked on me. Our addiction however was entirely sexual. Outside the bedroom we fought like cats and dogs. We had sex every night in every known position and in a variety of places Many of them quite bizarre sexual fantasies we shared were a real trip. In our three years together we discussed marriage several times. We decided however that if we stayed together for any length of time we would probably end up killing each other either during one of our intense sexual romps or in some insane argument. So we separated. Linda got her own apartment and an unlisted phone number. I did the same. We did our Best to stay apart but for the ensuing 18 months we continued to a a find each other for sex. We were approaching the mid-40s when we had this relationship. Who says you re too old 1 have not seen Linda in six years but i continue to have vivid dreams about her. She was the Best sexual partner in be Ever had. In a still addicted to her and she a probably still addicted to me. I guess its like when you Stop smoking. You never really get rid of the urge for cigarettes. The reason in a writing is to let you know that i conquered my addiction cold Turkey by sheer will. I knew it was bad for me and that it had the seeds of disaster. If i did it so can others. A los Angeles dear . Congratulations on your Victory but unfortunately not everyone has your inner resources. For those who can t do it alone i recommend a therapist or an appropriate support group. Dear Ann Landers Good heavens woman How could you chastise the lady from Illinois married to an arrogant Jerk who holds the family purse strings and leaves his wife and children without an extra dime you said to her a. You come in for your share of the blame for allowing him to get away with such outrageous what was she supposed to do kill the Guy lots of us marry not sir Lancelot but a part of his horse. Should we be punished with poverty and self recrimination i for one would have taken a crack at the woman a parents who refused to help their daughter and urged her to stay with the bum. No woman should remain in a Rotten marriage for social or economic reasons. Come on Ann. Can to you see that this woman is being oppressed by a society that does not regard full time Moshood As valuable the first thing that Illinois mom should do is network with single mothers. She ought to Start a Book review group a Garden club or a baby sitting service where time not Money is exchanged. Women can help each other by getting together and letting their hair Down. I did it. We Call ourselves the ladies Simcoe Street credit Union because All we owe each other is an open mind and a cup of Tea. That lady from Illinois does no to have to go it alone if her husband refuses to shape up. Please let her know. 4a a. M., London Ontario dear London what a sensible letter i thank you for providing More help than i did. C creators Syndicate letters policy explained on army promotions i am very disappointed in the Hierarchy of the . Army. In these Days of budget cuts lots of programs Are destined to be Cut or reduced. Its going to be tougher to get into the army. So common sense tells anybody that the army should be concentrating a Little More on its retention programs to keep skilled soldiers in the service. This is usually done by offering bonuses Choice of duty station education and advancement opportunities. Yes that a right promotion. The promotion system that is presently being utilized to Advance soldiers to e-5 and e-6 emphasizes performance which is Good. But Why do so Many Good soldiers get caught up in this system i have been studying for the Soldier of the Quarter Board. While Reading through the study guide it appeared to give just exactly what is expected of an no and what qualities they should have. Today s promotion program does not promote soldiers who always show those qualities a it is based on cutoff scores. Anybody can go to College and do correspondence courses. The result is a lot of cos who Are not qualified nor have any business leading anybody anywhere. But because they met the cutoff they Are leading. A lot of times they have looser requirements to get into that Field. This is not an attack on All cos because there Are a lot of Fine cos. Its an attack on the system. 1 have been in the army for four years with four years of National guard before that. I have been promotable for two years. I have scraped and clawed my Way up the Points ladder two and three Points at a time. In two years i have added 150 Points to my total. College at night sometimes four and five nights a week correspondence courses on weekends and i have volunteered for every school that has come along. I have also steadily increased my it score. I guess my Point is Why am i still an e-4? no article 15s. Bad checks Dis. Just nightly ironing and shining. Because i am in an administrative Field with no Bonus which supposedly is not As physically demanding or has a lot of Field duty my cutoff scores arc always in outer space. I do sometimes work Long hours at a time trying to serve the Soldier who usually has nothing Good to say about a Pencil now. The army is going to take 30 Points from me. Because the primary leadership development course is required. That Sok i will just have to take 10 More College classes to make up for that loss. How can i get ahead what does any of this have to do with having the right qualities to be an no to top All of this off. In a recent company briefing we were told that our corps was considering having certain soldiers removed from the promotion list because they were a what a joke. Let someone Tell me that i have not been progressing. Instead they should ask my wife what she thinks about me killing myself to get ahead while my friends in other Job specialities arc getting promoted with fewer Points than i have. The entire system is ridiculous. As i come close to my ets. I find myself thinking about my future. Do i have one in the army How much Money has the government invested in me How Many Good soldiers will get out or have gotten out because of the same circumstances a name and location withheld editor s note a it. Col. James c. Kelly chief. Promotions Branch . Total army personnel command Alexandria va., replies the frustration the Soldier expresses concerning his promotion to sergeant is understandable. Unfortunately the army is unable to promote All deserving soldiers because of strength considerations regarding military occupational specialities and the resulting Impact on readiness and budgetary constraints. The present promotion Point worksheet was instituted to ensure that Only Quality soldiers were promoted to meet the needs of the army by Grade and ivies within budgetary constraints. The Points Are allocated for Board Points duty performance skill qualification test awards and decorations military training military education and civilian education. These Points Are achievement oriented and emphasize the Soldier s self improvement and accomplishment of Basic military skills. This promotes the concept of promotions being based on the a whole Soldier concept versus a limited or narrow criteria. Soldiers compete for promotion and Are promoted to sergeant and staff sergeant by mos. Promotion Cut off scores Are established to ensure soldiers Are promoted within the Correct mos to meet the needs of the army. As the Soldier Points out in his letter soldiers in Moss that Are under strength May be promoted with less time in service with a lower Cut off score. The Soldier must realize he or she is Only competing for promotion against the soldiers within his or her mos. Soldiers Are promoted to sergeant or staff sergeant when they meet a monthly Cut off score. This score determined by the strength of the mos and budgetary constraints indicates the number of soldiers to be promoted each month. The Soldier has not met or exceeded the established promotion Point Cut off score for his or her mos for promotion to sergeant. The army strives to promote the Best qualified Soldier to grades and positions As needed based on the promotion Point worksheet. The promotion Point worksheet assesses the whole Soldier concept and rewards self improvement and personal accomplishment. The Soldier should continue to seek to increase his or her promotion Points through self achievement and personal accomplishment. If there is Little promotion potential in the Soldier s mos he or she should consider reclassification to a shortage mos with better promotion pals i would like to have pen pals from All Over the world.
