Hollywood has a ready reaped the obscene grosses from its Holiday blockbusters and it is not quite ready yet to release the summer slate of megabits. It s Tough these Days to pick out the rough diamonds from among the Many less than Stellar celluloid offerings on your local screen. At first glance heart condition May not leap out As a Cut above the current fare. Its premise is a bit shopworn and the Story is slow out of the Gate. But the strength of the film s two stars Bob Hoskins and Denzel Washington plus the Appeal of up and coming supporting actress Chloe Webb Combine to make this a Good film. The gimmick Here has been used for decades most recently in the ghost and mrs. Muir and further Back into movie Antiquity in the old Topper h a character Dies a d comes Back As a ghost to us the living and generally raise a ruckus and usually the ghost can be seen Only by one other person. In this Case the ghost is the talented Washington and the living person who has to put up with him is Hoskins. Hoskins plays a racist near alcoholic Chain smoking Grumpy policeman in los Angeles who has a cardiac arrest and is about to die when he gets a heart transplant. The Organ comes from Washington a smooth lawyer who represented Webb s character a Hooker who was once involved with Hoskins. Director James Parriott who also wrote the Story does t even bother to explain How it happens but Washington suddenly materializes to haunt Hoskins basically to urge the cop to find out who murdered the attorney. To do this he has to help keep the cop healthy and alive which allows for a lot of jokes along the lines of Washington not allowing Hoskins to eat Greasy food. The ensuing investigation involves drugs the government and the mob and makes for the balance of the film As Washington and Hoskins come to grips with their by Arre relationship. In addition to the drug entered plot there is quite a bit of explicit violence but Hoskins and Webb manage to soften the hard edges a bit in their scenes together. Washington a powerful actor who could probably play this role in his sleep Check out his work in glory if you Haven t already his Oscar was no flukes in top form eloquently showing the heartache of being Able to watch life but not to participate in it. Parriott who has a Long television resume As director the six million Dollar Man for example never quite lifts the film from its oddity status but he knows How to keep things moving along and All the principals show impeccable timing in their respective scenes. I especially liked Webb who also had a fairly meaty role in twins and had a recurring role on television s China Beach for a while last year. With a decent enough chuckle quotient and three very appealing stars heart condition manages to clock in at a solid three stars out of four.
