In be taken a poll of the females in my office and they All agree. Even some of the men agree and have decided not to bother Reading it anymore. 1 vote for Beetle Bailey a ban in the stars and stripes if it continues to be sexist. I cannot believe the army would condone this Type of behaviour by letting it be published in one of the Only papers available to service members overseas. I understand that Freedom of speech is an Issue however Young soldiers Are Reading about a general who is big on sexist remarks. If its of for the general to do it. Isnit it of for soldiers to do it too what kind of an example is that general to our Young soldiers if the cartoon involved the Kun flux klan it would surely be banned. Why do we females have to put up with the sexist remarks a capt. Janice r. Niedzwiecki Monoz Stuttgart West Germany editor s note a Mort Walker creator of Beetle Bailey replies since when is it a crime to enjoy looking at a pretty girl or even hire a person for his or her Good looks its done All the time in the movies modelling agencies airlines offices which need receptionists Etc Etc. If we can t look at pretty girls anymore we will have to close Down All Beauty contests Art galleries and chorus lines and Send All the cheerleaders Home. Eventually the human race will die out and you can find All the parking spaces you want. For your information i am not a sexist i read in constantly on women a causes to keep myself inform3 i support most of the tenets of the feminist movement and am very sympathetic to their bases i attempt in my strip to show the stupidity of sexist attitudes. Perhaps in the depiction of these attitudes some readers May feel in a promoting the attitudes not so. A thoughts about kindergarten enrolment this is an open letter to All parents of 4-year-Olds in our Community thinking of enrolling your not yet 5-year-old in kindergarten this fall think again although Dodds department of defense dependents schools has not quite caught up to the mainstream in the states in terms of having sept. 1 As a cutoff Date for children to be age 5 before entry into kindergarten it does not mean that you necessarily have to enrol your Young child in kindergarten. This is your Choice there is no Law that says All children who Are 5 by nov. 31 must enter kindergarten think seriously about keeping your child out for an extra year to grow and mature especially if the child a birthday is in september october or november. It has nothing to do with your child a intelligence a but my child knows All his abcs and numbers a or Lack of it it is merely a question of maturity and readiness. I have been a kindergarten teacher for five years now. I have seen a great Deal of pain involved when a Young child enters kindergarten before he she should. A a Johnny has a Tough time in kindergarten because he is always the youngest in the class. Sometimes it is because he cannot keep up academically with the other children. Most often it is because he is not As mature As the others and the child is expected by his Peers parents and teacher to a keep teachers and parents hold conferences because Little Johnny can to sit still and pay attention like everyone else in the class. Little Johnny does not want to do worksheets because his Fine motor skills Are immature compared with others in the class but not compared with his own age mates. Developmentally he a right on target for his age but he can to spend the Day in kindergarten playing with dinosaurs and leg gos because most kindergartens Are forced to a get children ready for first Grade with worksheets and other inappropriate curricula. It is not courtault or your child a that he cannot do the work required of him in kindergarten. It is the systems fault for allowing such Young children to enter kindergarten. As Long As we As parents and teachers Here in the department of defense Are partners in this we must abide by the rules. So this Means that As parents you Are free to enter your very Young child in our kindergarten classes and we As dedicated and committed teachers will be obliged to do our very Best with your child even though we know in our hearts that he has no business being in kindergarten yet. Some parents think of kindergarten As a a preschool or a free it does occasionally serve in this capacity for Many uninformed parents in our Community who think they Are getting the Best of the Little do they know child care and preschool services Are hard to find in our area due to Long waiting lists and the Cost of such services As compared with a a free Public education. I understand perfectly Why so Many Young children Are enrolled in our kindergartens. What in masking you As parents to consider is this think of poor Johnny not yourselves done to put him in kindergarten this year to have some free time for yourself and a see How it goes for if he a fails a you can always have him repeat kindergarten you Tell yourself because kindergarten does no to really matter. If you do this your child will Start out his Young life feeling that he has somehow a a failed and this is a hard thing to erase from a child a mind. Retention can have extremely negative results As a lot of educational research is Quick to Point out to you. In addition being the youngest in the class in the Case of those who Are not retained but sent on to first Grade the next year can be a terrible Burden for your child for the rest of his school life. Think of the Lon term results for Little Johnny who was not yet 5 when he entered kindergarten. He makes it through somehow each year but never has a Good sense of self esteem or self Confidence. In Junior High All his friends reach puberty before him or elementary school As the Case May be. When he gets to High school he does no to make the football team because he a too Small. He a constantly trying to a catch up to his Peers for his entire school life. What if he finally drops out of school in utter frustration How will you feel then i done to mean to scare you but i want you to consider the Long Range effects of entering a Young child in kindergarten now. I know there is a lot of peer and Community pressure to a keep up with the w to also have a Young child who is entering kindergarten this fall. Please for the Sake of your child forget the Joneses think of Little Johnny done to enter your child in kindergarten if his birthday is in september. October or november done to count on kindergarten screening to eliminate them we take just about every one who walks through our doors i firmly believe that kindergarten is the foundation for All future learning you either a a make or Quot break each child with his her first experience in school. Of course we kindergarten teachers try our Best to make your child a first year of school a big Success w e want your child to love school for the rest of his her life because of our Early positive influence. But w Ait until your child is ready and then Send him Oft into the exciting world of learning a name and location withheld oldest scout troop article gains interest a paddling draws comment this is in reference to your article on troop 1, boy scouts of America. The subject of the oldest scout troop in Germany will probably never be resolved but for what it is Worth i offer this i was a committeeman of troop 21, Munich during april 1957-november 1957. I further served As scoutmaster of troop 21 during november 1957-november 1958. During november 1958-november 1959, i was assistant scoutmaster and then served again As scoutmaster from november 1959 to november 1961. During ?T56/?T57 the scoutmaster was a capt. Byzek. During that time we had a committeeman by the name of col. Hamilton who had Many years in scouting in Europe prior to that time. 1 remember Well Many of the conversations we had on the history of scouting and the trans Atlantic Council Bra. I remember him telling us that scouting existed Long before the trans Atlantic Council As More or less separate entities. He used to recall How troop 21 of Munich was first called troop 1 and that in those political Days someone of higher authority deemed it inappropriate that troop 1 should not be in Munich and should be in Heidelberg. Thusly troop 1, Munich became troop 21, Munich. 1 cannot support the claim with documents but still have articles and other documents from the period 1957-1962. I do remember that the District commissioner during 1960 was John d. Holm and the District executive of the edelweiss District was Ernest g. Dehlhom or. During 1957-62, the troop was sponsored by the 508th my in of which 1 was a member. Even the american consulate general himself served on our troop committee As he had two boys in the troop. Perhaps former leaders members of the troop Are still in Europe and can offer More help on the scouting history. People like Sam Headon Edward Lema and Phil Collins served the troop As assistant scoutmaster. Gordon Brown served As the committee chairman and his two sons Ken and Jeff were members. Thomas Kean whose father a it. Col. Thomas Kean a served the troop in a variety of positions and then died tragically at the age of 41 served As senior patrol Leader. Others include Art and Bob Waldrup Steve Turner Michael Broas Thomas Freeman Stephan Gilliland Randy Geer and Paul Gnifke. We also had a German scout in the troop by the name of Geza Feck Eudie. Troop 21 has a Rich heritage in the Munich Community and has Many a a firsts in its Long history. If anyone would like to Contact me they can Call me at 0821406449. Maybe i can help them and at the same time they can help me locate some of the former members. A David v. Post Augsburg West Germany i am a West German National married to an a Nen can service member. By Chance i watched the Opran Winfrey show recently. The Issue was Corporal Pun St la ment in school to the Point that some children Naa actually been abused by their teachers. 1 was very deeply moved by some of the stones one teacher actually appeared on the program stating openly that he paddled students who do not a conform. I have a 2 v2-year-old son and strongly believe ti1 parents do not have the right to corp rally ?isn.1,. Children let alone teachers. Furthermore. I Wii damned if 1 will let someone like or. Smith who himself a teacher hit my child. What concerns me the most though and the Rea behind this letter is where Are the great american people Isnit the United states supposed to be to a Home of the braver by 1990 you still have not fought for the human rights of your children banned Corporal punishment from school. Some of you might now say that what has work. Europe for decades will not work in the states be the system is so different. Then change the system americans Are always very Quick to Pom. Fingers at others. Isnit it about time you s sweeping in front of your own door a Susanne Barnes a j a a Rann it inv
