The dogs suffocated in a Monock freight truck trailer on Board the ferry Tor Britannia in the North sea on sept. 5, 1989, according to testimony presented in court. A total of 100 beagles were being shipped to the Astra pharmaceutical company in Sweden for use in experiments testing drugs. Five hours after the ship left the port of Harwich the truck Driver Henry Stevens found that Only 21 beagles were still alive  10 of them were unconscious. Perry Croft farm kennels which owned the 8-month-old beagles pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering  was fined $21,000 by Harwich magistrates in february.
