But after 31 years and 10 months in the overseas school system Houston says its time to bid Dodds Adieu. A a it a been a great experience but i think now is a Good time to go a Houston said recently. A i turned 58 on easter and i have More than 33 years of government service counting nearly two years in the military. In a figuring on continuing working and i think it would be easier to Start a new career now than waiting until in a 63.? Houston added that his decision to retire was solidified by the Factor that it was no longer fun for him. A my Job was More fun than work the first 24 years i was in the system. I was doing what i wanted to do coaching and working with youngsters. Then in 1972 when Don Devona stepped aside for another assignment i was promoted to coordinator of the program for the Young athletes in us Desea. It was really fun for me a he said. Houston credited his Success to the outstanding sports people who worked with him a Lee Mawby Leo Palmer Don Drakulich John Ripmaster Warren Moyles and Jean Hanson. A we had everything covered a Houston said. A Lee Don and i had experience in football. Lee Warren and i were experienced in basketball. Leo and Don knew wrestling and track and Field. John was our Junior High coordinator then and when the women a program was established we added Jean to the staff and she made a big contribution to the program especially in gymnastics. A we Felt like we had the expertise to run a successful program and i Felt that we ran a very successful the Elevation of women a sports to varsity status was one of the biggest achievements. A we worked hard on establishing the program for the women a Houston said. A while officials in us Desea did no to actually feel it was subject to title in regulations i thought morally and ethically we had to be comparable to schools in the . Because we were getting students from schools that were benefiting from title in and we were sending students to those schools. A i was told we could Start the girls program but that there would be no funding for it in the first year. The boys Cross country and track teams were going places on half empty buses. So we opened those sports to the girls and filled up the buses and the coaches had to work with both the boys and girls. A More Money was available the next year. So we added volleyball and basketball. We continued to develop the women a program and today it is As Good As a or better than a Many stateside Houston a biggest thrill in his Long tenure in the system also came in 1972. A was us Desea sports coordinator i was invited by the . Olympic committee to be one of 10 . L event natives to attend the olympic Parade in linens and to witness the lighting of the olympic Torch a he said. A for a be person that san extremely big Honor and i was thrilled. The olympic games Are the top Echelon in the be world and Dodds has to be Ben Abrams extremely proud of Alonzo Babers for his achievement of winning the 400 when Babers competed at Kaiserslautern High school he set the Dodds records in the 200 and 400 meters. Babers went on to compete at the air Force Academy and gain olympic Fame with his 400-meter Victory in 1984. Houston had tenures at Ernest Harmon fab in Stephenville Newfoundland chateau Roux France and Pitburg Karlsruhe and Wiesbaden in West Germany As coach sports coordinator and director of be Over the years. A i came into the system in 1959 at Stephenville a Houston said. A i was the first coach and athletic director. They wanted a football program but there weren t enough kids for football. I asked what the canadians were playing and was told soccer. I never had coached soccer before but i went out and ordered some uniforms. They were delivered the next Day and we had our soccer in 1963, Houston transferred to chateau Bill Houston Roux where a i thought i would get to coach football. However the paperwork was delayed and i was late in arriving and de Sczepanek got the Job and i was relegated to coaching basketball. Sczepanek is still in the system at Wurzburg As track coach. A i had 12 outstanding players and we won the com z league and went to Germany and won the us Desea class b championship by beating Jack Fugate a Pitburg team in the semifinals and Lee Mawby a Dreux team in the title game. Dreux beat Orleans in the semifinals. So we had three com z teams in the final four. A Winkler had that chateau Roux team the year before i came to chateau Roux a and that did no to Hurt my players Winkler was John Winkler a Young coach in the system who would develop into one of the most astute basketball mentors Ever to Grace the Halls of us Desea. He had outstanding teams at chateau Roux Wiesbaden Madrid Mannheim London and Frankfurt before retiring after 28 years in the system in 1988. When France gave the . The Boot most of the chateau Roux faculty and equipment was transferred lock Stock and barrel to England where upper hey Ford High school now Croughton was opened. Houston and his Crew were passed Over when the new coordinators were chosen and Houston was Given the assignment of Dodds Germany physical education director. The be program in Dodds has been a big disappointment for Houston because one hardly exists. A in using the athletic program As an honors program in be Dodds does very Well a Houston said. A but we Are handicapped by weather and poor facilities to actually be Able to offer be classes for All children. A i am additionally disappointed in our program because we require Only one year of be for graduation. That a better than Many places in the . Where nope is required. But what happens Over Here is that the non sports students generally take be in their freshman year when they Are not mature enough physically. Many do not have a sincere interest in recreational sports at that Houston said that things Are looking up be Wise for Dodds students. A Dodds has made plans to strengthen the be program starting in school year 1991-92 by requiring All students to take a freshman health fitness course to determine their fitness needs and they will have to take at least one More semester of fitness activities to graduate. We should encourage them to take even More be courses so that they can continue to improve their fitness and recreation skills Houston played football and basketball and competed in track at Hollandale miss., High school and went to Mississippi state where he played football his freshman year. He was in the National guard and when the korean War came along his National guard unit was activated.
