European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 5, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 10 a the stars and stripes columns Tom Wicker democrats will be pressed in Senate elections in the unlikely but not impossible event that the democrats lose control of the Senate this year they a do Well if they gave up Only five scats no More no less. That would result in a party lie at 50-50, and give the republicans control Only by virtue of vice president Dan Quayle a tic breaking vote. For the next two years in that Case Quayle would have to decide personally and visibly All the numerous divisive issues on which neither party could Muster 51 votes a a Prospect at which an ambitious politician would have Good reason to Quail. It Isnit Likely to happen and the republicans Arentt Likely to get control of the Senate in that or any Way a though their chances Are a lot better than the democrats 10-seat Edge might suggest. Republicans need to win at least six democratic seals while losing none of their own to produce a 5l-Lo-49 majority. If that happened those six scats changing hands probably would come from among the following a Illinois sen. Paul Simon a Liberal and an unsuccessful democratic presidential candidate in 1 988, is being sharply challenged by rep. Lynn Martin for whom both George and Barbara Bush already have campaigned. A Iowa sen. Tom Harkin a democratic freshman in a stale where no democratic senator Ever has won re election faces rep. Tom Tauke who a republicans say a has raised $2.1 million from More than 20,000 contributors. A Michigan sen. Carl Levin a Democrat won by Only about 52 percent of the vote in 1978 and 1984 in a state that a been losing democratic strength. The republicans will pick a candidate probably rep. Bill Sci Uette in a september primary a Rhode Island Claiborne Pell a Democrat and chairman of the foreign relations committee has been around a Long time. Democrats note that both he and his popular opponent rep. Clau Dinc Schneider arc pro Choice . Rosenthal equally Liberal a a so Why replace Pell with Schneider a a Montana two years ago sen. John Melcher a Democrat was beaten As were All incumbents in statewide races. This year sen. Max Baucus another Democrat faces a primary and republicans think him vulnerable but four Republican contenders have entered a possibly divisive primary of their own. A Nebraska republicans believe that rep. Hal Daub can beat sen. James Exon a conservative Democrat because the senator got Only 52 percent of the vote in 1984. But that was 24 Points More than Walter Mondale the democratic presidential nominee. A Hawaii after spark Matsunaga a death. Gov. John Waihee a Democrat appointed rep. Daniel Akaka also democratic to fill the seat. Republicans think they can win a special election this fall. Even in a democratic state if they can persuade rep. Patricia Saiki to run and she does no to seem reluctant. Even republicans concede that winning six much less All of these seven seats would be remarkable democratic sources scoff at the idea though con cd ing that All these races Are close. Democrats claim also to be a a compete it Ives in Kentucky where the Republican freshman Mitch Mcconnell won by fewer than 6,000 votes in 1984. Harvey Sloane the former mayor of Louisville is the probable democratic nominee. Three gop senators Gordon j. Humphrey of new Hampshire William l Armstrong of Colorado and James Mcclure of Idaho Are retiring but Republican officials see a no contest for their seats. Democrats contend they have decent chances in Colorado and new Hampshire which they consider a Strong pro Choice state and even Hope to win Quayle sold seat in Indiana. That supposedly Republican state has a democratic governor and seven democratic representatives out of 10including Jill Long. Last year she won the House seat from which Quayle and his appointed successor Dan Coats moved up to the Senate democrats cautiously Hope state rep. Baron Hill a former basketball Star can beat Coats. Republicans Are squirming and democrats chuckling a for now a at the special Case of Louisiana. The seat of sen. Bennett Johnston a Democrat is at stake and the republicans want state sen. Ben Bagert for his opponent. They May be embarrassed with David Duke instead the former Kun flux Klansman is running in Louisiana a nonpartisan primary As a self anointed Republican and might Well win the right to face the senator in a Runoff neither party would laugh about that. To avoid a Runoff Johnston needs to win Over 50 percent in the primary a a tall order in a state with the nations highest unemployment. C new York time Auschwitz revives fear of German reunion Oswie Cim Poland. Auschwitz. After the visit there Are Only a few words in the notebook mostly the same frantic scrawls Over and Over. Do not turn away. Stay. Not run. Look. Be Strong. Be faithful do not turn away a you. Sometimes at Auschwitz a Man has to close his eyes and lean against the Wall. That he allows himself though he knows no prisoner at Auschwitz was permitted to Stop for a moment to rest his vomiting soul. But then each person through prayer or scrawled self command which May be the same thing must find strength not to Lurk Way. Not from the faces of those who were about a die photographs now Hung neat and dated on the Walls thin faces staring out in unbelieving terror not from the sea of hair clipped from the skulls of the living and the dead to be sold for 20 pfennig a Pound. Not from the suffocation cells or the starvation cells or the stakes where prisoners were Hung by their arms or the Gallows where they were hanged by the necks dying slow not from the flogging torture blocks or the surgical torture Chambers. Not from Walls where prisoners stood manacled for hours before they were shot. Not rom the ruins of the ovens and Gas Chambers that the killers could not quite destroy As they fled. Not from walking Over the grass that covers the ashes of the prisoners burned in pits when ovens were at capacity. Not from the millions who died at Auschwitz and not from jew or pole or russian. And not from germans who made this thing Auschwitz. Entering i knew i must look at once for a certain Young woman. Is that Why i came the first time almost 30 years ago she looked Down from the Wall smiling. She knew she would die but she smiled a Sweet smile. All my years since i wondered what she thought As she smiled at death s camera. I walk along the Walls of pictures sweating with anxiety As i come to the last corridor unable to find her. So Many murdered they probably have to change pictures. I waited too Long and Felt i had deserted her. I did not note her name then and now it is too late but i will give her a name so she will be a girl again not a picture and not be deserted. I remember her As polish. I will Call her Elzbieta. Many polish Elzbieta hang on the Walls. Perhaps she was one when she lived. Here is a huge photograph of Little jewish boys in convict uniforms. You pretty Little fellow in the Corner a i wonder what became of you. Are you a doctor or a teacher or a great scientist maybe you became a violinist or maybe a Clown to make people laugh with pleasure but what a foolish thought Little boy. You were killed and burned when you were 11, weren to you9 what would our world have been if you Little boys had lived do you know outside it is raining and fearfully cold on the Railroad platform where jews were divided the weakest sent to the ovens the others to work until they too were murdered. I remember some of the jews were stripped naked in the cold so i open my coat i hear the same sound i have heard All along a Man making retching noises. Aleksander Wiechowski my polish Friend and colleague looks at me worried takes my hand. I understand who has been making the sounds and that it is time to leave. It is even harder this time to visit Auschwitz. The second time you know what hell will be. That but something else too. In Auschwitz the germans murdered the non jews accursed enough to fall into their hands a mostly poles gypsies and soviet soldiers. But Auschwitz was where All the skills of the third Reich were gathered to exterminate the jews. This is the German holocaust in Brick and blood. And now anti semites Are again be fouling Europe As god knows. Alex and i talked about god a most people do on leaving Auschwitz. I said maybe god himself sinned by allowing Auschwitz. Alex said he did not think it was god who had sinned. In Germany the week before i was asked what More the germans could possibly do to be trusted by people who still feared All the documents about German unification and reconciliation with the world should be signed in Auschwitz on the burning ground. German politicians will not like the idea. But maybe Young germans could fight for it. Just by fighting for is they might help ease fears of the new Germany. But forgiveness of the Germany that created Auschwitz a of course that belongs to the Little jewish boy and to Elzbieta. Ltd new York times i i
