European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 8, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday May 8, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11ahri Landers dear Ann Landers i am deeply concerned about an 8-year-old boy in our neighbourhood. I am convinced that he has severe emotional problems and his parents done to have a clue. 1 have a son the same age and i am worried that this boy ill Call him Brad will harm my child or some other youngster. Brad is cruel and destructive. He destroys property steals toys from his playmates and tells his Mother he found them in the garbage. I have seen him urinate on the front Lawn and in the Street. When i mentioned this to his Mother she said a i have been having trouble with him about that. Brad urinates anywhere he feels like it. He has ruined some Good furniture in our living the boy uses obscene language and when he is angry he kicks punches and hits his playmates and exhibits frightening Savage behaviour. I have never seen a child act so viciously. He is also cruel to animals. His own pets Are scared to death when you try to pet them. His Mother is very Laid Back and does no to seem to realize that her songs behaviour is serious. Should i Tell her that he is in deep trouble or is this none of my business a worried in Texas dear w in t Brad needs to be seen by a professional a and at once. His behaviour suggests that he is seriously disturbed and is capable of acts too terrible to mention if not today five 10 or 15 years up the Road. I urge you to take this column to brads Mother in the spirit of helpfulness. With your support and encouragement she will be much More Likely to seek help for Brad. Meanwhile you and other neighbourhood mothers have every reason to keep this disturbed boy away from your children. Dear Ann Landers my husband and i have been married for 25 years. We Are both christians and Active in our Church and have four Lovely children. We dated for several years but i was a Virgin when we married. Our life together has been harmonious and Loving. Last year i discovered i had genital herpes. I was in a state of Shock when the doctor gave me the news. I cannot Tell you How this has affected my life. My husband has said time and time again a i have not been with anyone then he becomes uncharacteristically quiet. His attitude has added to my suspicion. 1 feel As if i have been living with a Man i do not know anymore. I still love him but i no longer Trust him. The closeness that we had before is gone. Our sex life which used to be exciting and fulfilling is now almost non existent. My fault. I tense up when he touches me my doctor has advised me to put the past out of my mind and carry on As i always have but i can to seem to do it. I am deeply resentful of what my husband has put me through and i cannot forgive him. Are there other wives in your Reading audience who have had this problem maybe they can help me. Please ask them. A new Orleans heartache dear new Orleans i believe your anger is fuelled by your husbands refusal to be honest with you. Asking other wives who have been through the same ordeal a How did you get through it a is a splendid idea. I Hope the women who were once where you Are now will write and Tell us How they dealt with the problem. Ill print the Best responses. C creators Syndicate letters a parents must get involved writers feel having spent 23 years As a spouse of a teacher and the father of four children the one key element that not even the most Well funded and teacher talented school system can do without is daily parental involvement in the child s education. Here a some of what that daily involvement Means in no particular order do the parents Check to see that Homework is being done if Homework is not being done do the parents impose any sanctions no movie no television no social event Etc ? do the parents themselves show an interest in the child a school work and do the parents show that they value education do the parents limit the child a daily dosage of television if the child is creating disciplinary problems at school do the parents take an Active supportive role in solving the problems do the parents impose a curfew on school nights do the parents watch the child for signs of substance abuse and do something if they see those signs you will note that the questions posed can Only be answered by the parents not by the child a teachers no matter How talented and accountable. parents too be accountable in the educational process educating a child is not something that can be done solely within the confines of the classroom and the seven hour school Day. Its a partnership Between the school and a child a family. Without daily family involvement no educational system can educate a child adequately. A Bobby b. Brown Wurzburg West Germany the two letters concerning Dodds parents and teachers working together brought to Light an excellent idea a teachers and parents working together. This is not a new idea. In fact there has been a mandate concerning this idea for Many years within the Dodds system. Its called the school advisory Council. Unfortunately there has been very Little involvement by parents up to now. If you Are concerned about what is going on in your school Contact the school office and find out when the next meeting of the Sac will be and attend the meeting. These councils Are an officially recognized advisory group with an elected Core of both parents and teachers who meet regularly to discuss All aspects of the school. The Only limitations on them is discussion of individual teachers and children. Individual problems must be resolved Between the school management and the affected parents. Many Sac councils arc conducting their annual elections this time of year so now is the time to become involved. When your child brings Home the nomination slip just fill it out and submit it. Even if you Arentt elected there is still much you can do. Many parents who Are very Active on our Sac were never elected. The Only difference Between an elected member and one who is not is the official vote. Most councils never need to actually conduct a vote since there is usually a consensus among All members anyway. The Bottom line is a get involved. Only our children will Benefit and both parents and teachers can agree that working together through the Sac can accomplish that goal. A tech sgt. Jeffrey d. Perkins Raf Ben Waters England a Flensburg also studying space tomatoes the children of Naples Italy Are not the Only ones studying the space Tomato seeds. Our principal. Or. John c. Shurtleff of Flensburg elementary school found out about the seeds from a column in the stars and stripes. One Day or. Shurtleff called our fifth Grade into his office to Tell us what he had done. He discussed with us what we were going to do. We got two bowls and labelled them differently Earth and space tomatoes. We put 25 seeds of each category into the bowls. Then a week later we labelled some More bowls and put 17 seeds of each category into them. We water them every Day and Check them for sprouts. Every week we measure the tall ones. We also knew from the beginning we were not going to eat these tomatoes since they arc we thought the Naples students idea of naming their plants was neat. We called ours a it nth which stands for dynamite tomatoes. We Hope the stars and stripes prints our response because we want the readers to know that the students in Naples arc not the Only ones doing the seeds Experiment.
