He asked if the passenger was vomiting or just dizzy. Actually the Driver did t seem much interested. Finally the woman yelled a do something for heavens Sake he son the floor a the Driver stopped the bus and called for an ambulance. In the meantime a gentleman across from me got up and observed that the Man was having a very difficult time breathing. Everyone stood around gawking. Suddenly a fellow turned to me and asked a will you help 1 think this Man is having a heart i replied a of we did car together. He did the Mouth to Mouth and i worked to get the heart pumping again. Luck was with us and we succeeded. The ambulance came and the attendant said a i think he has a Good the Point of this letter is that when something like this happens remember that it could be you or a loved one who might need assistance from a stranger before the ambulance arrives. If you Arentt Able to help because you done to know car please learn. 1 am writing this letter not because i want to be praised for what i did but to encourage people to Start caring More about their fellow Man and to take the trouble to educate themselves about a few simple procedures that could save a life. A Chicago Tribune Reader dear Chicago thank you for giving us All something to think about. You made two excellent Points one learn what to do in Case of an emergency and two when you see a stranger in distress do what you can to help. We must never forget that we Are our brother a keeper. Dear Ann Landers our son and daughter in Law have been married 17 years. They have four children. They invited us to dinner at their Home a once. That was 14 years ago. They Are Here every thanksgiving Christmas easter most birthdays and for july and August cookouts. They complain because we never come Over. The reason is they never invite us. This year i would like to withhold the easter dinner invitation and see what happens. My husband says i am asking for trouble. What do you say a a West coast grandma who is tired of cooking dear grandma your letter reached me too late to skip the invitation for easter but 1 Hope you will do it for the fourth of july. Call your daughter in Law about june 15 and Tell her that you and Gramps would like to visit them this year and ask what time shed like to serve dinner. You May hear some premature fireworks but at least you will get the message across. Dear Ann Landers ask your readers to think about this for a moment you have a Plain bar of Iron that is Worth about $5. Made into a Horseshoe its Worth about $11. Made into screwdrivers its Worth about $ 15. Made into Needles its Worth about $3,500. The same is True of another kind of material a you. Your value is determined by what you decide to make of yourself. A from Bane Clene professional cleaning digest c creators Syndicate by the stars and stripes during the first three months of 1990, a Large number of letter writers expressed concern for the changing future. We received 1,372 letters from Jan. 1 through March 31 a Only 14 shy of the record set during the last Quarter of 1989. Readers addressed such issues As the political scene in Eastern Europe the forthcoming budget cuts personnel cuts and even the Long term prognosis for the environment. Many of our readers joined in the discussion of whether the two Germany should be reunified. Several told of heartwarming meetings and conversations with East germans. Reunification could provide a Cornerstone for peace and a stable self sufficient european Alliance according to some. Others warned that a United Germany May cause even More problems. As tensions ease in Europe wrote one Reader go ahead and Send troops Home to use them to Man a a peace Force to clean up cities Battle drugs and House the homeless. Others wrote that it is foolish to close so Many bases because the soviet threat is still there even if slightly diminished. Five readers were outraged when rep. Les Aspin a Wisconsin Democrat refused to approve a routine Transfer of funds by the defense department to pay personnel costs. They called Aspinw a stance which he has since softened a purely political move that had nothing to do with what is Good for the military. These writers said they and others would remember the congressmen who backed this move when it comes time to vote. When one Parent complained that contracts offered by child care providers were too hard on parents 18 readers responded Many of them child care providers. They said most providers Are highly trained especially if they Are certified and parents should willingly pay for Good providers. They also said that parents should not begrudge them a Day off once in a while since they also needed time to relax and be with their own families. As for requests for information we could not anticipate the response to our offer to pass on a government pamphlet listing congressmen and governors. We received 12 letters the first Day and then stopped logging them. We decided to just take care of the approximately 1,700 letters that poured in. Leadership qualities were a Point of concern for 10 writers. One woman recommended getting rid of the Shamers and complainers and let the qualified overworked sergeants get credit for their work. Four people were upset by her characterization of Only lower in listed soldiers As the Shamers they said some leaders Are worse than the ones they arc supposed to be leading. One letter depicted a Tonguc in Check example of an airman going overboard As he a a corrected a non commissioned officer for a uniform violation. While four letter writers managed to accept the letter in that vein. 18 blasted the airman for what they considered tactless behaviour bordering on insubordination. They agreed the airman had the right to make the correction but Only while using tact. They collectively took their i its off to the noncommissioned officer who remained Calm a while being berated by a most of the 10 writers who responded to our article on Home schooling were people who also teach their children at Home. They praised the article but took Issue with a couple of statements made by people interviewed. They said Home schooled children often score higher on tests than their traditionally educated counterparts. Not Only did they Feci that their children interact Well with others but they also contended that they were not less energetic than parents who worked in an office All Day. Opinions varied on the effectiveness of Black history month. Four of the nine who wrote wondered Why there is such a thing staling that we arc All americans and should have a National Unity month instead. The other writers said Black history month is to spread understanding not create More racism. Nine writers did not think Justice had been served in the sentencing of a Captain charged with beating up a civilian. They said an enlisted person would have been Dis honorable discharged. They were even More upset that the article 15 would be placed in the captains restricted file.
