European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 6, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11hders k dear Ann Landers i am sorry it took me so Long to write this letter. I have been thinking about it for at least a Vear i want to say thank you. My father and i never got along we were always at each others throats. He had the that i looked Down on him because he was not College educated. This was not True but his feelings of Inadequacy came out in All kinds of ways and that was. One of them. I know now that our relationship was filled with misunderstandings because we never were Able to communicate. After Reading one of your columns i decided to Stop being stubborn and make a genuine Effort to reach out to my father and mend those badly damaged fences. After All it was my wedding Day. As my father took my Arm to walk me Down the aisle i leaned Over and said a i really do love you tears welled up in his eyes and one rolled Down his Cheek. He said a i love you too that one sentence was magical. It dissolved All the Hurt and anger i had stored up inside me for so Many years. Six weeks after that Beautiful wedding my father died suddenly of a heart attack. I can to Tell you How thankful i am that we made peace on my wedding Day. That column you wrote on forgiving changed my life forever and i will always be grateful. A a real fan in Michigan dear thankful it was wonderful of you to let me know. The knowledge that i have changed someone a life for the better gives me a tremendous amount of pleasure. This old Workhorse says a a thanks for that Nice bucket of Oats. Dear Ann Landers i just came Home from the grocery store and in a As the Dickens. Once again i am disgusted after trying to figure out what the labels mean. Here san example in Large letters it says 100 percent natural. Natural what i wonder. In smaller letters it says 10 percent fruit juice. This raises the question of what in the world is the other 90 percent. So i read the Label. Water is the first ingredient mentioned. Then i read dextrose sucrose or com syrup which of course is sugar. So the Way i see it the person who buys this stuff is paying More than a Dollar for something that is 10 percent fruit and 90 percent sugar and water. Do the Consumers a favor Ann. Let them know that they Are being had. They can make honest to goodness fruit juice at Home a lot cheaper. From now on that a what in a going to do. A squeezed to a pulp in Flint Mich. Dear pulp i have Good news for Consumers. Secretary of health and human services Louis Sullivan has declared War on the packaging and Labelling sharpies. No longer will they be Able to get away with vague and misleading information. From now on they must list the ingredients in language that people can understand on the outside of the bag Box or what have you. And its about time. Your employment plans a intentions within the . System should reflect the above note quoted in its entirety from my supervisor signals the end of my tour Here in Heidelberg. I would like to take this time to thank All of the wonderful people i have been fortunate enough to meet and take care of and to reflect a Little about my tour. I am a family practice physician and have been Here for almost seven years. I have always enjoyed taking care of people from All races with All types of families and in All types of situations. I have been fortunate to be with families during the birth of their children and the death of their loved ones. The reason that i stay in the Federal system is that i done to have to charge people for the care that i Render. This frees me to take care of the patients to the Best of my ability without having to worry about cutting Corners because of their financial situation. This sounds corny but i like taking care of military families because they have a commitment. The commitment is to the defense of our country. This common purpose seems to recruit and retain a different Type of person one that is More honest and trustworthy. I feel that the military communities represent the Way the United states could ideally be. Every one s employed housed and Able to grow to the Best of their ability. _ this really hit Home when i saw my daughter in the a Nutcracker Ballet with a whole cast of mixed colors and shapes girls. All of them were proud of their accomplishments. The parents were celebrating the great american dream the Chance that our children can be whatever they want to be. Initially i looked askance at the military a attempts to make us feel at Home Here. As my cynicism wore off and i met some of the people that were organizing the activities i came to understand that these people really do care about the Community and Are trying to give us a Little bit of Home Here. Many of these people stopped waiting for the government to pay for everything and started Chipping in their Money and time to do what they would have done in the United states working for the Community for the fun of it i.e., building a halloween House assisting with girl scouts baseball and so Forth. Thank you once again for letting me practice Here and letting me into lives. I Hope that i have added to your lives the Way that All of the people i have come in Contact with have enriched mine and my family. Enjoy your stay and of course stay healthy a Walt Fernau . Heidelberg West Germany a proposals on raising spending Money president Bush and Congress met recently to decide How to raise taxes and spend them. Why not take a few moments and let them know How you think these new revenues should be generated and spent Here Are some of the proposals that i favor a a 100 percent tax increase on All alcohol and tobacco products. This might even get some of the Over indulges to scale Back their consumption. Almost a double Benefit to the american Public in the Long term. A no new programs. All new and increased revenues Are to be dedicated to retirement of the National debt. Sort of like getting a raise at work. A Good time to pay off some a end the second mortgage income tax deduction. Too Many americans cannot afford a first mortgage. To allow a select part of the population to deduct a second mortgage is unfair. A a mandatory National savings Bond Purchase. Amount based on salary. Those with incomes below a determined level Woula be exempt. Americans should be financing their own debt. Maybe then they would take More interest in How their Money is spent. A spending and credit freezes. Our elected officials continue to spend Money which we have not yet earned. The Long term results can Only be disastrous. A the so called peace dividend should be applied to National debt Relief. A no attached a a riders to appropriation Bills. If a piece of legislation can not stand on its own merits it has no business being shoved through on legislation too important to veto. These Are my ideas. What Are yours Tell president Bush. Tell Congress. I intend to. A tech sgt. Robert m. Smith or Pitburg a West Germany a writer Happy with garages extra Effort i would like to commend the Munich cafes garage for its Success in convincing me that cafes is trying to improve customer service and satisfaction when my Pov did no to pass inspection because my emergency Brake needed to be adjusted i took the car to cafes for the adjustment. The next Day i returned to the inspection Point and was told that the brakes were still in need of adjustment. I conveyed my irritation to the Man at the counter Back at the garage but could not bring myself to show anger. It Wasny this fault. About an hour later i received a Call that the manager had made the repairs himself and was personally taking the car Back to the inspection Point to make sure that it received the final a stamp of i know that he did no to have to do All of that especially in the Middle of the Day when most of their Normal appointments were promised their cars by 5 p.m., but i was really glad that he did.
