European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 29, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 a separation pay for enlisted ranks discussed for years i heard rumours that officers who left Active duty were entitled to some sort of separation pay. Recent disclosures about Severance pay verify the Rumor and fuels the fire of suspicion that officers Are treated a a better than enlisted warriors. Is there really a class of Soldier who is entitled to a Large final payment for not measuring up lets take for example the Soldier who get a promotion and was maybe he failed an set skill qualification test or even worse was a Pound or two Over the weight limit. This is not the smart lean mean a Soldier wanted in the new action army. We pay him for a maximum of 60 Days leave and give him his exit papers. We done to pay enlisted soldiers for not getting promoted. Why do we pay a non promotable officer what is the rationale for allowing this payment to exist in the first place Isnit the Soldier who qualified to go to the Ali defense language Institute in California As valuable As the oct officer candidate school Soldier Isnit the army technician trained at Lowry fab As valuable As the infantry officer of course not in a caste system management officers will always be treated better than labor enlisted. Its a fact of life. It is imbedded in the history of the military and will not leave any sooner than permission to carry an umbrella is authorized. Our Congress the same Noble body of people who recently voted themselves a healthy pay raise wants to remove the Cap of $30,000 on the amount payable to officers. With the very next stroke of the fiscal appropriations pay pen they propose to limit enlisted Severance payments to $ 15,000. Maybe the proposed enlisted separation pay is enough. Maybe the real world payments for rent food Gas utilities and doctor Bills wont eat up the Money before a real Job is found. But if $15,000 is not enough and $30,000 is too much i propose the following Tell Congress to base Severance pay on several common elements marital status years of service current pay Grade military education it scores Ucma actions number of dependents multiply by the number of registered autos in the family Divide by the number of divorces and make the final Severance pay due 10 Days after the Start of the new fiscal year. Done to forget that the same Congress has been inventing pay raise formulas for me the past 10 years. It should not be a real problem to make Severance pay More equitable for former defenders 6f Freedom. My Point is simple. Everyone caught in the reduction should be treated equally fairly and with Honor and respect. Later on we can catch those american civilians working overseas who slipped through the cracks of the reduction. Many of them will get their final pay earned leave and maybe a plane ticket to despair. A name withheld my Ringen West Germany editors note a sgt. 1st class Ronald Flynn office of the Deputy chief of staff resource management he Usa eur replies let me take this Opportunity to comment on this extremely volatile subject. There Are two types of separation pay a disability and non disability. Disability separation pay is currently paid to All ranks. Of particular concern now with the upcoming reduction of military manpower is non disability separation pay. Congress has Long authorized a form of non disability separation pay. At times it has included both Active enlisted and officer personnel. At other times Only enlisted personnel were entitled Severance benefits. Currently however Only warrant and commissioned officers and Reserve enlisted personnel Are authorized no disability separation pay provided they meet certain criteria As established by congressional legislation. Our military and congressional leadership realizing the value of the enlisted Force in All services has introduced several Bills to Congress to provide transition benefits to include enlisted separation pay. I encourage you to make your congressional representatives aware of your concerns about separation pay. Your voice in this matter May persuade your congressman or senator and result in votes to support this important pals i am a filipina living in Kuwait. Dear Ann Landers you certainly missed the Mark in your response to the woman who was bitter because her Mother left her out of the will after a lifetime of Devotion. You told her she should go for counselling and get the Poison out of her system. In my opinion her anger was justified and you should have backed her up. Obviously you have never walked in those shoes. Well i have. My father was married to my Mother for 40 years. She had six children and worked her fingers to the Bone. He treated her like hired help. Dad became engaged two months after momus funeral and was married within the year. The new wife took Over immediately a i mean his personal affairs his Bank account he a Rich and his mind. Her children by another marriage get everything they want and we get nothing. He buys this woman fabulous jewelry and designer clothes and he treats her like a Queen. Mom shopped the bargain basements and resale shops. She never knew dad had any Money. All the years they were married he told her that business was bad and that she had to watch her pennies. When dad Dies 1 plan to Call his attorney and ask about the will. If his wife Hasni to spent it All and if he does leave us kids something 1 will ask the lawyer to Send my Check in the mail. 1 will not go to my father funeral. Since he is a prominent person in town my absence will surely be noticed and talked about. As far As i am concerned he can rot in hell. Done to advise me to get counselling. My father is the one who needs it. I doubt that you will print this letter but even if you done to that Sok. It was Worth the 25cent stamp to get this off my Chest. A Corpus Christi dear Corpus in a relieved to know that your letter made it without creating a fire in our mail room. I have no advice for you but i would like to make a few comments. The hatred you feel for your father and his wife does not Hurt them in the least. They Are enjoying life immensely while you Are eating yourself up alive. Meanwhile they will continue to be Happy while you continue to be miserable. Dear Ann Landers in a sure you will get a lot of Static about your stand against legalizing drugs. Here a some ammunition. It was a letter to the editor of the Norfolk virginian Pilot written by Anne Duncan Eustis of Portsmouth a. Please done to let anyone change your mind Ann. You have taken the right position on this Issue. George s., Norfolk a. Dear George thanks for the assist. I can certainly use it. My head is bloodied but unbowed. Here is Anne Duncan Eustis letter at a recent meeting of the world affairs Council in Norfolk his excellency Tommy . Koh the ambassador from Singapore addressed the question should we legalize drugs rather than have any of our rights taken away when asked How his country had managed to do such a Good Job of cleaning up the drug problem the Sim Bassa Dor replied a we did three things provided intensive education starting at a very Early age handed out the death penalty to drug dealers and provided institutions for then he added with considerable emotion a do not even think of legalizing drugs.
