European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 3, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday july 3,1930 the stars and stripes Page 25 even commentary can it escape terror by Mike littwin the Baltimore Sun the announcement was typically British in its precision and practice understatement. A we will be unable to continue the match on Centre court a came the message Over the Loudspeaker. A please leave the stadium As quickly and a quietly As Quot Why a someone surely a tourist shouted Back. No one who lives Here could fail to understand the exact meaning of those a suspect package a As it would later be described proved to be quite an Ordinary one. It was simply another bomb scare another inconvenience that comes of life As it is being played out in the dangerous dying Days of the 20th Century. But it was More than that too. The scare was a reminder that there Are no sanctuaries left. When the bomb disposal squad takes Over Centre court at Wimbledon magic gives Over to fear and we All lose something indefinable ours. The police stopped play at 7 35 p.m., in the midst of a doubles match featuring Ken Flach and Robert Seguso against Jim Grabb and Pat Mcenroe. Referee Alan Mills came onto the court to warn the players who grabbed their gear and exited quickly. Mcenroe actually ran. Twenty five minutes later after the bomb squad had done its work the All Clear signal was Given. But play was called on Centre court anyway Given the late hour and also the nature of the disruption. It was at least the second such scare of the Day and the second time in three Days that courts were actually cleared. Even among the old hands no one can remember a court being evacuated Here before it happened thursday. These Are skittish hours in a skittish land where bombs Are hardly a Remote possibility. It was Only last monday that a bomb exploded at the Carlton club in London injuring four. Members of the Irish Republican army took responsibility. A we can to take any chances a a London detective who would not give his name said saturday. A not the Way things Are , Wimbledon s Royal Box is a famous hangout for the royals and their friends and thus an obvious target for the Ira although the Box was empty by the time of the scare. But it was always a target. Things Are changing Here and it would be hard to say they re changing for the better. There Are announcements made at the Start of each Day that packages should not be left unattended and if any Are sighted they should be reported. You can find signs giving the same message alongside those that Point to where you can buy strawberries and Cream. The fear extends beyond the Walls of the All England club of course. A few years ago i was on a bus that was evacuated when a packages owner could not be identified. The Day began not unlike Many at Wimbledon with rain delaying the Early matches. It was the first rain of the week. Who would have guessed there would be fewer rain delays than bomb scare delays the Tennis was Good sometimes exceptional. Stefan Edberg fought off a five set Challenge from Amos Mansdorf. Michael Chang came Back from two sets Down to beat Mark Kratzman. 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 62. But the Day grew Darker and not from gathering Clouds. I was writing at my desk in the press room which abuts Centre court when play was stopped. A few minutes later the police arrived in some Force to Clear out the writers room. A now a one shouted As cynical reporters seemed unwilling to give up their posts. We left the building and stood outside with the thu sends who had evacuated Centre court. Meanwhile on court 1, which is also adjacent to Centre court Ivan lend and Bryan Shelton played on oblivious to the commotion. The package found on a Gangway was not on the court i Side and Wimbledon officials it not wish to allow any More disruption than necessary. That a a policy of a kind Here to be careful on one hand but at the same time not to give in too much. The local Media even the sensational tabloids do not report bomb scares. No one would say either what method was used to dispose of the package or what its contents were. A we re not giving away any information arc we a the detective said. A that would Only help in the players room there was the expected Gallows humor including speculation on the life expectancy of a bomb disposal officer. In the More sophisticated press room writers were wondering How the ghost busters would handle such a Case. We can afford to laugh. We done to live Here or in other places where real bombs can blow real people to hits. At Wimbledon officials handled it their own Way. Over the Tours Ireaker came a message thanking the Centre court patrons for their cooperation in Clearing the court so quickly and then apologizing for having to end play. It seemed by then that everyone understood what was being said and Only Loo from Page 21 match next saturday. But for now one hurdle was gone Capriati was eliminated a with a timid Grin a curtsy to the Duchess of York in the Royal Box and a wave to her family in the crowd. With so much Talent on display in so Many important matches it would seem that no one contest would grab the spotlight. But Graf Capriati had Star Quality and it lived up to its Billing. Graf quickly showed that the distractions of family problems and a persistent sinus ailment that sent her Home for treatment Friday would not be a Factor on Centre court. She broke Capriati in the first game and again in the seventh holding off two Capriati game Points there then serving out the set.
