European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 11, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 a a a the stars and stripes wednesday july 11,1990sports letters tee time being an avid albeit struggling golfer i try to play whenever i can. Obtaining a tee time on weekends at the Ramstein Golf course has always been a difficult thing to do. In the past one had to drive to Ramstein Telephone requests were not allowed and fill out a card with requested Lee times for the weekend and holidays. Then a computer would randomly select applicants to fill the limited tee times available. Sometimes you would get Lucky and sometimes you would sit at Home on weekends. The system was based on Luck of the draw but it seemed fair. Imagine my Surprise when 1 tried to apply for a tee time at Ramstein and the Golf course manager informed me of the new policy. Only personnel from the Kaiser Lautem ram Stein can even apply for a tee suppose that the people from Parma sons Wei Brucken and other nearby communities Are supposed to go play on their own courses. Of course there Are no other courses. Ramstein is my course too i discussed the new policy with some of the my Parma sons golfing buddies. Some said they circumvent the new restrictions by making up names and ranks and units from Kaiserslautern. In other words they lie. But who cares they Are just trying to play Golf. It seems that lying is acceptable provided Only the system is Hurt. A the whole idea of excluding some so that a few can participate smacks of elitism. Why not just say Only colonels and above can get a tee time better yet Only male colonels and above can get tee times. Golf courses and other such activities Are funded by Naf activities who Are funded by profits from pm by audio photo clubs and other Money generating activities. The people in Pir Masens and Wei Bruckn spend a bundle in these Type activities in the Kaiserslautern military Community but Are being denied the use of the Golf course which is supported by the activities. Come on Ramstein get your act together. Drop this selfish elitist policy so that All the golfers in the area can use their Golf course without having to lie about it. William t. Atkinsjr. Pir Masens West Germany editors note a Gerald j. Cardinal chief mar division he 377th combat support Wing replies 1. As the writer pointed out Ramstein Wood Lawn Golf course is a heavily played course situated within the largest Community of americans outside the United states. Past policy has been to take care of As Many golfers As possible regardless of where they were from. In recent years Golf has enjoyed a world wide Boom which has introduced Many new participants to the game. This created an even greater demand to play and Ramstein was no exception. 2. Air Force policy As dictated by afr 215-19, air Force Golf program has always required that tee time systems provide for Active duty air Force person Nel assigned to the base to sign up for Advance tee before other eligible patrons. Due to player demands dictated by a saturated course policy had to be followed. However realizing the unique situation of our Community we went further to ask he afm pc at Randolph fab in Texas for a waiver to include any times military stationed in the Kaiserslautern military Unity to be considered into the above policy. A waiver to the established regulations was granted effective this year. 3. In addressing the writers statement that some people lie in order to obtain a tee time it can Only be stated that it is unfortunate that the actions of a few will in effect Hurt Many. It will Only Force us to tighten already stringent tee time requirements so we can enforce what is required by inspires the soul i find it incredible that you have chosen to print the Washington Post commentary a soccer fans done to know any better by Steve Twomey. It shows the ignorance of a Man that could not have played and for sure has no knowledge of the game. He refers to statistics the applications of which we All know Are limited when the human Factor is involved. Football soccer is a game which inspires the soul. A game where skill and finesse will almost always overcome adversity and Force. Its a same that offers so much diversity that its impossible to put into unfair analysing Steve Twomey a commentary first of All those people rioting Arentt soccer fans. 1 done to know what else could be said about this common sense should prevail. Secondly a Lead is not Safe in soccer As it is not in any other sport. His flaw comes in the comparison. He does no to realize that five goals in a soccer game at the highest level is like eight or nine touchdowns in a nil game. So his statement a a soccer game that a 2-0 at the half is Over. An american football game that a 14-0 at the half is just getting started a does no to carry any weight. Why two goals done to equal two touchdowns. As it was obvious by halftime of last years superbowl that the 49ers would emerge As the winners. That is the sort of dominance a.2-0 at halftime soccer game signifies. And even so i have watched Many soccer games where a team has come from such a deficit to tie or win As has also happened in american football. To say that a soccer fails the mind a ironically made me smile. Then Steve Twomey proved without a Shadow of a doubt that he Hadnot a clue. The diversity in formations and the styles of play which different teams have always gives the fan the anguish and Delight in analysing the game. With the world cup being played one can see All the different styles a the South americans with their Short control game and triangular passing where individual skills Are brought out the Northern europeans with their Diagonal passing where they attempt to create an open Field to make forceful runs to the goal the Southern europeans who tend to mix the South american control of the Ball with the Northern europeans creation of open space the British and Irish who play the Long Ball game As a sort of counterattack. Even within these two great soccer continents there Are nation to nation differences. And in be Only spoken of two of the five continents. Soon one will see the emergence of african and asian soccer and yes North american soccer will also make its presence known. Eduardo Fernandez upper Heyford Englan America loses its hold on Steve Cauthen by Jim Luke London apr he still looks like the kid from Kentucky but Steve Cauthen hardly sounds and rarely thinks much like an american any More. One thing has t changed however and that is Why Cauthen spent the birthday of his Birthplace America in the bosom of his adopted place in Spand making a living Over Here the same Way he did Over there. Rid ing a horse for pay. Last wednesday he brought Home one of three mounts he Rode at Warwick a slightly better than average Day for the Man who for a glorious year was the most celebrated rider in the United states. Cauthen has won Britain a jockey championship for three of the last five years. But he planned no More Celebration of wednesdays Victory than he did of Independence Day. A i done to know that july 4th Means anything special to me any More a Cauthen said softly a other than in a glad that somebody did it about 200 years ago. It Quot a not like 1 miss the fireworks or anything. We have those Over Here you Cauthen feels that Way about Many things that were part of growing up in America the occasional craving for a hot dog goes away soon enough and with a Little bit of Effort he can get his hands on a Progress report on How his favorite baseball team a the Cincinnati reds a and his Friend Pitcher Tom Browning Are just after his arrival Cauthen might have said a a doing instead of but if after 10 years of living around London and Riding around the continent he is not quite As famous a transplant As Mcdonald a it is not for a Lack of try ing. His accent is English As is his Girlfriend and he has cultivated an interest in the comings and goings of the Royal family. On tuesday As Cauthen left Wimbledon for the London train station and his Home in Newmarket 50 Miles to the Northeast the cab he was Riding in pulled Over to allow a motorcade of the royals to go past. Racing a triple Crown aboard a magnificent Colt named affirmed the horse As it turned out was the last to manage the feat and Cauthen at 17, was the youngest jockey Ever to do so. But less than a year later the partnership was finished Trainer Laz Barrera took away the mount during a meet in California in the Middle of february with Cauthen in the midst of a skid that would extend to 110 races without a Victory. And by late Spring the boy wonder made a very grown up decision to open shop in Europe where the purses Are smaller but the Money and Security for a top Jock is better where the Pace is slower and the season Shorter ?o1 liked Europe that a Why in be stayed a Cauthen said. A a in a not sure i knew really what to expect but it suited me quite Well from the Start a that Wasny to entirely True. He did win his first race but he spent the rest of the year having difficulty getting Good mounts. And by the end of 1979, the English tabloids trumpeted headlines asking a super kid or super Flop a a part of the description was perhaps a business would soon expertly he named the limousines occupants Althou by sped b _ at the Lone american Riding in the cab with him they sped by in a blur. Then he grinned almost sheepishly ugh Fly asked whether he considers himself More English than american Cauthen replied a i consider myself to Steve Cauthen astride Michelozzi in 1989 photo. Be quite Happy wherever i am whenever in a there. A certainly i miss various things at varying times but it does no to happen that often and its not often very Strong. And if i Haven to found something to replace it Here then i make sure i get it when in a Back at Home in Kentucky around the in 1978, Cauthen had As grand a year As any teenager Ever had plucking All three gems of thoroughbred the Quot super open to question but the a kid Quot prove incorrect Cauthen was 5-foot-2 when he left the states. Now he is 5-6, 1 a obviously 1 was maturing and maybe that a another reason living and racing Over Here has worked out a the weight scale for jockeys is slightly higher. A when you re working on that Fine a line a Pound Here or there it can make a major difference i could probably still ride there at my weight of 119 now but id certainty miss a few mounts because of he said. Cauthen made his Mark in 1985 by becoming the first amen can in 71 years to win the English jockey championship he repeated the following season. He has had his share of and Downs since. He was treated briefly at a Cincinnati Hospital for alcohol dependency in december 1985 and was nearly crushed in an August 1988 fall. A 9clhei> 512 million during his Brief tenure in .
