European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 13, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes dear Ann Landers my 40-year-old husband died suddenly in our living room. According to the autopsy the cause of death was an enlarged heart. I phoned 911 but the paramedics could not revive him. He was taken to the nearest Hospital where he was pronounced dead on is my problem i have been 1 swamped with Bills from All sides. The emergency room at the Hospital wants $956. The emergency room physician wants $343. The paramedics want $109.52 for the ambulance that took my husband to the Hospital which is two blocks from our House. The base station people who were phoned by the paramedics for instructions want $100. The Coroner who took the body to the mortuary for an autopsy and stored it for two Days wants $950. Bill no. 6 arrived along with a warning because no response was received to the previous notices which i never received. It stated that i have 10 Days to Settle the Bill for services of a a crisis management team a ordered by lord knows who. I never heart of them my husband was covered by medical insurance at the time of his death but i was not instructed by the insurance company to Send in a signed emergency statement form so the Bills have been coming directly to me. The claim is being evaluated by the insurance company to determine whether they consider my husbands death an emergency. Can you believe this the Man dropped dead in our living room meanwhile i am receiving past due Bills from various sources and am struggling to keep from going to pieces while grieving Over the sudden loss of my wonderful Young husband. It seems to me that when a Man Dies at Home six medical services should not be required. Or am i crazy what should i do a . No City please dear . My heart aches for you because you Are at the mercy of the insurance company and often the wheels of big companies grind slowly. Take this column to the chief Honcho with this message from me a please kind sir help this poor woman As soon As possible. She has gone through a terrible ordeal and needs immediate attention. Thank Yon so much. Ann dear Ann Landers i am 19 and have made the decision not to marry. Why am i so cynical let me explain. I come from a. Large family with a full assortment of great grandparents grandparents great aunts cousins Etc. Over the years there have been several deaths. In almost every Case the Man died and the woman was widowed. Here a what troubles me for every woman in our family who was genuinely saddened by her husbands death five blossomed smiled More and did More interesting and exciting things. The Quality of their lives was greatly improved and it is obvious that they love widowhood. My own father is a grim Stem Joyless person and in a pretty sure that my Mother will enjoy life much More after he goes. Please comment Ann. A new York dear . What on Earth do the women in your family do to their husbands or a Why do they make such poor selections i suggest that you look elsewhere for role models dear. But it will be like other years. It will fade into history. 1 am sure that a few of the cos will fade away also by retiring or the like 1 know that there Are a few cos who think this was their year. They May cease to function next year. Some of them probably failed to do any worthwhile acts last year. There Are a few cos who just want to get the Money or the Power to Rule by abuse there arc a few cos who do not want to train the soldiers or assist their soldiers in any Way. There Are some cos who just want to get into a bottle and ferment. Then we have the All around no. This is the no who does his Job 24 hours a Day this is the no the soldiers and other cos know that they can count on. This is the no officers can speak to and know that they Are understood. This is the no who no matter what will always be an no. This is the no the soldiers will follow in peace and surely in combat. This is the no the Lazy Good for nothing cos Are afraid of. 1. a. A a a Good no sees each and every year As his. He is there to get the Job or task or whatever accomplished. He is there to train the soldiers so that they will survive. He is there to insure that the other Guy Dies for his country. He is there to teach Honor respect and professionalism. Matter what. The True no is going to be around fora Long time even though the year of the no is gone. In sgt. 1st class Arthur Green or. Mannheim West Germany editors note a sgt. Mai. A. Fulton office of the Deputy chief of staff operations sergeant major he Usa eur replies i am pleased to have the Opportunity to respond to the writer and share my View of the noncommissioned officers corps and what the year of the no has meant to me. A ,.  .1 a \ the noncommissioned officer corps is unquestionably the Backbone of the . Army. A Small number of individuals May criticize the no corps and rightfully so but Een those that criticize have a Chance to step Forward in ranks. While attending the us army sergeant major Academy an executive from ism corp. Said his organization could not pay their employees enough Money to do what the no corps is doing the year of the no is fading away fast. The no ill still be around. If you Are an no you arc among the Best and you Are appreciated by All. The True no knows that his or her Mission is never done. An no can be called on any time Day or night by his soldiers or others. This no will assist without hesitation no today. As i reflect on the a year of the no a i cannot help but think of the future and the Challenge it brings. But first i must say thank you sir chief of staff . Army for recognizing such a devoted group of men and women in such an honorable Way. They serve their country so faithfully for so Little in return. Thousands of soldiers train daily in situations where often the slightest mistake could be death. They do it again and again because they believe in their sergeant. We As cos must be leaders in every sense of the word. Our courage perseverance and ethical conduct must be without question. Thanks for the Opportunity to share my View of where the no corps is today and where the future of the corps is headed. A . Flag has special meaning for writer the Reader who suggested that ceremonies honouring the . Flag and our National Anthem were unnecessary and inconvenient has missed an important Point about our Flag in contrast to Many other nations the United states includes As citizens Peoples from every other country in the world. We do not have a homogeneous society with a single language and cultural tradition which identifies our rather we Are a collection of Peoples bound Only by ideas of democracy and Freedom and the Quot proposition that All people Quot Are created equal and Nave an equal right to be As successful As their abilities and desires permit. What does this have to do with our Flag simply this our Flag exemplifies the spirit of America. It is a rallying Symbol of our concept of nation with which All americans can identify regardless of their native language or place of birth. It is therefore something much More than a Flag identifying the United states of America. It serves the purpose for us that language and common cultures serve for other nations. It identifies us All a regardless of culture place of birth language or traditions brought from other countries a As americans and As such our Flag deserves our respect. Indeed Many americans have Given much More than respect to the Flag a they have Given their lives for a Symbol which you find it a a inconvenient to Accord respect. Surely the inconveniences of finding some place to put your Popcorn and Coke or of standing in the rain for a few minutes is not a great Deal to ask. Yes i am patriotic and occasionally sentimental about it but i have seen enough of the world to know that our Flag is a Symbol for the greatest nation in the world and whatever the slight inconvenience it May involve 1 will always stand proudly and Salute our Flag wherever 1 see it.
