Peace was my Hunting for Roe Buck started off in a rather unusual Way this year. In a not sure of the cause perhaps laziness or old age or something else. Whatever Many Hunters will probably think in be lost it a the Hunting spirit that is. I did no to go until Over a month after the season opened. But this was an improvement Over last year when i did no to get out until Early August. So 1 figured maybe 1 was off to a better Start this year and in line for some fun. A i arrived at the foresters House in the Early evening. We talked for awhile about the general Hunting situation. He told me to feel free to shoot a Buck Carling female Roe or Young pig. We also discussed opes for Many Good Hunting opportunities in his area this year. He wished me Waidman Sheil and 1 headed for the Woods. I was soon settled in the Hochwitz High sea outdoor adventures Mark Swearengen e checking my binoculars watching listening and dreaming. The air was pleasingly warm and the sky was lightly overcast. The Birds were Active flitting about and rusting around on the ground trying to make me think a Deer was approaching softly through the grass. Before too Long i heard a Specht Woodpecker known As the Carpenter of the Forest hammering away on a nearby tree. A then the excitement started. I suddenly heard All kinds of snorting and rumbling in a Thicket about 30 meters in front of me. There were squeals that reminded me of a Bam lot on a pig farm. Some of the Small Trees were shaking and i expected to see wild pigs running out any second but it did no to happen. Then there was silence. I continued to wait and listen. There must have been five or six Amsel a Type of Blackbird in Germany that reminds you of a Robin singing up a storm. They were making so much noise i Wasny to sure whether id hear a Deer if one would approach from behind my Hochwitz. An hour passed without event. The pigs started making noise again for a minute or so then silence. Another half hour without event. Then i heard a cuckoo Start in with his famous two note Call. I thought of the Many times in be heard this Bird but never seen him. I noticed a Bird perched in the top of a tree about 300 meters to my right front. The cuckoo sound seemed to be coming from that direction. I was curious. I pulled out my Spe Tiv spotting scope and tried to determine if this Bird i could see was the cuckoo. He was about the size of a Dove perhaps Slimmer and a bit longer. But i pull him in close enough with the scope to Tell whether he was the one making the sound. Of Well. Good try. Actually 1 think he really was a cuckoo. About a half hour before Sundown a Deer suddenly appeared off to my left. It was a Buck. No need to Hurty i thought. 1 checked him with the binoculars. I judged him to be a 2-year-old. 1 thought some More. This is my first night out and in a not sure i want to shoot yet. Seems like a Long time since in be had a Buck show up so soon i decided to study him with my Spe Tiv. I took note of several things. His deep red color. His body lines and must Arflack White Patch above the nose. The Antler formation a he had a Fork on the right Side and Spike on the left. Otherwise the Antler development was Good. With a Little less than medium build he was not especially promising for the future. Nothing wrong with shooting i concluded. I thought of Many Hunts in the past when i got a Buck on the first night out. So. No not this time. Too soon i thought. Id rather spend several Days out Here before shooting. It la be More fun that Way. I went Back to watching through the Spe Tiv. It was like looking into the face of that Buck from about 1 meter. I could see the detail of his anglers. The Rich color of his summer fur. What a treat. I watched him eat one Oak Leaf after another. He kept me company until about Sundown. When it was time to go i tried to gently move him out of the Way with some slight hand movements so As not to suddenly spook him. It seemed to work. He went Over to a tree line and Lay Down. I was then Able to climb Down from the Hochwitz and leave quietly without disturbing him. Although i did no to bring Home any game it had been a Nice experience and i had fun telling my family All about it. I dreamed about the Buck that night and the wild and natural colors i saw through the scope. I woke up thinking about How Nice it was and wanting to get Back out there again. A few nights later i was Back out there again. This time i saw the pigs. There they were. A Bache pud about six Frisch my a female and piglets. Tny re were two or three others that looked to be about a year old. I studied them All with my binoculars for awhile and finally slowly thought about shooting. Then i get a Good sight on the right one. So no shots a few minutes later they were gone and again i went Home without any game. My family asked whether i was still trying to get something or just going out to look. Good questions. We were All starting to wonder Why i had not fired a shot. I could t say for sure. But i had seen a lot and had fun. Things Are looking up this year and 1 Hope to have Many More pleasant hours in that same Forest out there in my old Wool watching for wild game and listening to the Birds. Waidman Sheil.
