European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 16, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday july 16, 1990aririlande& dear Ann Landers. I think you Are terrific but when you goof up you do a Complete Job of it. For example recently you gave your Blessing to a woman who described <5 Mother As a a heroic because she remained for 40 years with a Man who was an abusive husband and a Rotten father. Maybe i missed something but i Don t see anything heroic about stay my with a Man who treats you Crummy and knocks is children around. A better word for that Mother in my opinion is stupid. Or How about cowardly my father was also a Drunken bum. My siblings and i were elated when mom finally kicked him out. Better have no father than one who makes everyone s life hell. 3 _ i will sign this letter but please Don t print my name. No purpose will be served by embarrassing my family. Dear ,v6r n you weren t the Only one who did t car for my answer and in retrospect i deserve to be clobbered. Read on. From Washington . Every now and then you ask a Reader Quot where is your head anyway Quot Well now i would like to ask you the same question. I could not believe your response to the daughter whose Mother stayed with her husband for 40 years even though he was abusive to her and the children. She said her Mother was heroic. I say she was just As sick As he was. What a this nonsense about keeping the family together families like that May share a dwelling but they Are the stars and stripes not together. They come apart at the seams because no Quot Quot take t in a a i be been there. My father was an abusive alcoholic. After a a a a f vv411v up i _ body is getting taken care of properly. They Are All Loose cannons on a rolling deck. If i sound harsh its because several years of counselling i decided that my Mother was not the Saint she wanted us to believe she was. Actually it was her responsibility to get us out of that hell House but she did t have the guts to do it. Please save your kudos Ann for the Mother who says a enough of this a and throws the bum out. From Atlanta i am concerned that a recent answer you gave will reinforce the idea that it is Noble to put up with the abuse of an alcoholic husband. Many questions came to mind when i read that letter. Did that Mother attend Al anon was she enabling her drinking spouse when the children asked her Why she took his garbage she did t answer. How did they interpret her silence did anyone in the family Ever go for counselling i wonder How Many readers who respect you and think your word is Law read that letter and resigned themselves to staying in an abusive relationship because it was a the right things to do. I am an adult child of an alcoholic father and a Mother who stayed with him for the Sake of the children. My Mother submerged her feelings to the Point of total denial. So what did i learn from her example i Learned that it is of to be kicked around. 1 Learned that Security is More important than self esteem. I Learned to mistrust my own perceptions and deny my feelings. Now i am doing a lot of re Leaming. I wish my father had gone to alcoholics Anonymous. I wish my Mother had gone to Al anon. I wish 1 had gone to Al teen. Sad to say we were never allowed to acknowledge the problem or discuss it. We denied the pain put on a Nappy face and stayed together. And we All died inside. Friends made and friends lost knowledge of How the world really is and experiences gained cannot be measured. During this tenure of service we have been witness to Many changes a. Some Good and some bad. One which stands out is How Many times we have heard a we Are going to do More with we have heard this since Day one from the Powers of the great Potomac Puzzle Palace and beyond to our first sergeants and below. With the changing political Arena in Europe the defense budget dramatically reduced and reductions in manpower announced doing More with less is even More pronounced. With Rollback programs coming on line we All must a tighten our belts and attempt to do More with less. In doing some research on the benefits of physical conditioning and executive health i cannot relate How surprising it was to find that big business loses a an estimated $10 billion to $20 billion annually through absence due to illness hospitalization and Early death among this raises a myriad of questions. How does this affect the air Force what can we do to help reduce the budget can we save Days lost to illness can we reduce air Force Manning and the defense budget All at the same time yes to All. How by implementing a physical fitness program that will affect promo ability. This can be accomplished by cutting the amount of Points allotted for ears enlisted performance reports from 135 to 65. The remaining 60 Points could be picked up through physical fitness tests a much like the system our sister services use. Under the current of system physical fitness is the individuals responsibility. By making this a Mandato 3f formation three Days a week for one hour those who on to want to participate can ship out and those who do participate can enjoy the Good health and Long life promoted by this program. Also people cannot complain that they a did no to have time a the air Force has made time for air Force the savings realized by reduced illnesses reduced manpower by those not taking part less mistakes made by overstressed workers coupled with speedier recovery times from illness would by far reduce the defense budget. Morale welfare and recreation he Safe replies thank you for giving me an Opportunity to comment Force to a proud _ always been Able to meet the physical requirements of k to on the air Force physical fitness program. The air Force is very Prond of the fact that its personnel have a % a a v fuj9iuu their Job without mandatory physical training it of course there Are exceptions and those people who cannot meet physical standards Are dealt with individually by their respective commanders. However As required by air Force regulation 35-11, the air Force weight and fitness program the primary responsibility for meeting air Force weight and fitness standards still rests with the individual airman on oct. 1 1989, a new four year program phasing in new physical fitness standards went into effect. The program is designed to enhance Mission readiness by adopting More stringent fitness tests and by providing commanders More flexibility in improving unit fitness. It includes an incentive to improve individual fitness the a get fit option for those who fail the fitness evaluation. People enrolled in the a get fit option have 90 Days to Correct their deficiency before retesting. Those who still fail Are then enrolled in the units mandatory fitness improvement training. The new fitness standards and test procedures were developed by a fitness advisory Council comprised of air Force physicians physiologists dieticians and related program managers. While still giving the primary responsibility of maintaining fitness to individuals it brings unit commanders into the Loop in a More clearly defined role. It is a program that must be thoroughly evaluated therefore mandatory it is not being considered for air Force wide adoption. A dog buyers should be aware of acc rules Many americans Are spending a great Deal of Money on purebred dogs in Germany. Quite a few of these dogs Are being considered for Breeding and showing Stock when the owners return to the states.
