European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 17, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse / a ? tuesday july 17, 1990 the stars and Stripe sarm Landers dear Ann Landers i liked your advice to . From Buffalo the woman who can to Bear to see her Mother get old and avoids visiting or calling her on the phone. I do believe however that you were too easy on her. My grandmother is 86 and in nursing Home 1, try to visit her at least twice a week although it is anything but pleasant. In fact its depressing. The place smells and the residents look god awful. Most of them Are in pitiful shape. Many use walkers or Are in wheelchairs. Last evening when i visited grandma her hair was matted and the food she had for lunch was still stuck to her face. Would i not go to see her because its such a Downer no Way Ann. The old people in the corridors smile at me and put out their hands to grasp mine. They Tell me How Beautiful i am. They want to touch my Long hair. They comment on my pretty shoes or my jacket. Sometimes they ask the time or Iff will please change the Channel on their to. It is obvious that these folks Are starved for attention. Just exchanging a few words with someone from the outside makes their Day. My Brothers Are self entered jerks who think like . They avoid visiting grandma with the excuse that a it makes them sick and a the place is too they say they a rather remember grandma the Way she Hope the Young people who read this will look ahead a few years and realize that one Day they will be old and hungry for company. Please get this message across Ann. They need to hear it. Dear Miami a Miami Reader you did a pretty Good Job of getting it across with no help from me. In a glad you wrote. Young people tend to listen to their own. In a sorry your grandmother is in a facility that smells bad and that no one bothers to Brush her hair or wipe her face after lunch. This Means that the place is understaffed and not properly maintained and that your grandmother is not getting the proper attention. Please pass my comments on to the members of the family who Are responsible for grandmas care. And bless you for your compassion and kindness. Dear Ann Landers i read in the paper a few Days ago that in Copenhagen 648 Gay couples have Mamed since october when the danish government made such partnerships Legal. These couples Are granted All the rights and privileges of marriage Given to heterosexual partners under danish Law except one. They May not adopt children. You once said that you were in favor of Samc sex couples being Given the same financial benefits As married couples taxes housing and health insurance but that you were not in favor of legalizing Samc sex marriages. Since we All know that for a Long time the scandinavian countries have been Way ahead of the United states in social changes do you think you might change your mind level with us Annie. A Ankwiz Titiye in grand Forks n. A dear Ink i Learned a Long time ago never to say never but i cannot imagine that i would Ever be in favor of marriage Between members of the same sex. Gem of the Day the fishing party was hopelessly lost in the Woods with supplies running Low. A we were told that you Are the Best guide in Wisconsin Quot said a dismayed member of the group. A i am a replied the guide a but now i think we Are in Manitoba. Creators Syndicate Page 11 letters writers respond to Issue of tent shoring i would like to respond to the writer from ludwigs Burg who is concerned about male and female soldiers sharing the same tents. In my 14 years of Active duty i have been assigned to both combat arms and combat service support units. In ass units my Section has always been mixed and usually males Are the minority. When planning for Field duty i would always ask my Section if they wanted to sleep in the same tent or separately. I have yet to need two tents solely for the purpose of separating male and female soldiers. Once it is established that we will sleep in one tent i always ask if the females want a partition put up. If they do it goes up if not it does no to. I then establish some simple guidelines 1. Act like the adults we Are supposed to be 2. Respect each others privacy 3. Time will be allotted daily for males and females to have the tent to themselves for personal system has yet to fail me and it has always made the Section closer and better working. In a writing from Graf. My Section has nine females and three males. We Are sharing the same billets Sepe rated Only by some ponchos hanging from the ceiling. We be been Here two weeks and have one More to go. No one has Felt threatened nor have they lacked privacy. A a a Quot a i suggest to the writer that she and the other females in her unit state their problem to the Chain of command and or see the equal Opportunity representative if they really feel threatened or forced into sharing tents with males. But even better maybe they should consider leaving the service. In a sure we wont have separate sleeping facilities in the next War. A sgt. First class John r. Overcash Bamberg West Germany Why bring extra tents for one Soldier is this Soldier going to set up the tent take it Down and worry about getting it from one place to another if you Nave to jump what exactly Are you doing in the Field that requires a a privacy what a so hard about changing in your sleeping bag try being in a unit that moves so much they done to get portable latrines. I can to believe a female no was a a forced to sleep in a tent with male soldiers. In a presuming that you Are familiar with the Ever popular a shelter its better to sleep in the same tent with the soldiers you work with rather than separating by gender. That is if Sou Are fortunate enough to have the luxury of tents in the Way i also happen to be a female. A staff sgt. . Be mis bad Kreuz Nach West Germany obviously this Soldier does not spend much time in the Field and does not appreciate the purpose behind Field training. The Mission is to simulate a wartime environment in which units learn to operate in such a Way As to inflict maximum obstruction to the efforts open pals the enemy. Under such a situation As this the personal inhibitions of one Soldier Are rather insignificant. A As an example we offer an Abc Decon. Would the Soldier prefer to die from contamination or Deal with the Brief embarrassment of a few minutes in a Decon Shower sans clothing with soldiers of the opposite sex the Point facilities arc not always available assuming the toe even authorizes enough tents for Malc female segregation in that unit. / also increasing the number of tents in the units perimeter increases the Chance of detection by the enemy. We Are certain that the writers unit is part of an army that docs take care of its soldiers in the Best Way it can under All circumstances. However spending a few Days on a Field problem with hic 5th in 15th inf regt would give name withheld a new appreciation for her unit. A sgt. John e. Hetrick a pfc. Joseph a. Zultz Elberger Schweinfurt West Germany the no. 1 priority of a tactical unit is the accomplishment of the Mission. All soldiers arc trained to make the smallest physical signature possible As Well As conserve time and resources. When a unit Rolls into a Field site the object is to set up and be operational within a few hours using As Little equipment As possible. In addition to this you want to be Able to maintain the troops using As few resources As necessary and be Able to tear Down and move out on Short up extra tents Camino maintaining the stoves used in these tents extra fuel Etc. Not Only hinders the Mission but also wastes valuable resources and taxpayers dollars which could be Pul to better use elsewhere a sgt. Julia Thornton a sgt Cheryl Wallace ludwigs Burg West Germany. Whatever happened to Field expediency a up medium used to come with a Tarp cover which when Hung from one Side pole and across to another made a perfect a room divider even a few ponchos or shelter halves lashed together provide the same effects am proud of female soldiers who use their common sense in overcoming the adversities encountered when they Are required to temporarily pocket their femininity. Setting aside the Mission essential reasons for leaders to be quartered separately from their solders there is a reason by Chance of circumstances that should relieve the stress of soldiers in the Field. What group of Junior enlisted severs involved in a Field exercise wants to have to spend his or her precious few a off duty hours in such close proximity with his her supervisors it works both ways a Reva j.
