European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 27, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse By . Farber new York times the Lithe Blond woman known As the Central Park Jogger has surrendered some of the privacy she has coveted since the night when she was dragged off a running path in the Park and nearly beaten to death. So intense has been the Jogger s desire to preserve her anonymity and As a Friend said Quot simply get on with her that she Only recently and reluctantly decided to testify against those accused of raping her a an option largely left to her by the Manhattan District attorney s office which is prosecuting the Case and could have subpoenaed her Quot she was not Happy with the world seeing that she a not 100 percent a said an acquaintance in whom she has confided. The attack on the Jogger a and in separate incidents that night on other people in the Park a was one of the most widely publicized crimes of the 1980s in the United states. Some saw in the joggers Case the random but pervasive violence in big City life. Others saw the particular vulnerability of women. Because she is White and the defendants Are Black some saw a racial element in the Case whether in the attack itself or in the vigorous prosecution of the defendants. In the Days following the april 1989 attack on the investment banker when doctors indicated she might die or be left with considerable brain damage much was written and broadcast of a personal nature about her. As doctors at metropolitan Hospital in East Harlem where she was initially treated responded to requests for information about the victim s injuries and Progress As Cardinal John of Connor visited and Frank Sinatra sent roses and thousands of people offered their sympathies the victim s family and employer friends and former teachers helped reconstruct a life that was both grand and Ordinary. Born in Bergen county n.j., she had moved As a girl to upper St. Clair pa., a Pittsburgh suburb where her father now retired was a senior manager with Westinghouse and where both he and his wife were members of the local school Board. An accomplished Ballet dancer the Young woman went to Wellesley College where she was Active in the Catholic student Center and helped organize a nutritional program for battered women. By graduation in 1982, she had won the economics department s top student prize earned a Phi Beta Kappa key and was nominated for a Rhodes scholarship. Quot she was Brilliant probably one of the sets graphic Susan Ham victim Jogger gets on with her life top four or five students of the decade Quot at Wellesley recalled Len m. Nichols chairman of the College s economics department. Quot she had the ability to ask the question that she wanted to ask and that was far advanced for her age and the other students did t resent Al Call that diplomatic skills but she was t a bubbly cheerleader Type Quot Nichols said. After two years with a management consulting firm in Boston a and a summer working for the state department at the . Embassy in Zimbabwe a she enrolled in the Yale school of management where in 1986, she received a master s degree in business and International relations. She joined Salomon Brothers As an associate investment banker in the corporate finance department and by 1988, was a Junior member of the firm s fast paced Energy and natural resources group. For some time she shared an apartment with a Salomon employee she had met in a training class Patrick Garrett. But by Early last year she had subleased a cooperative on East 83rd Street that she was considering buying a vegetarian who was much concerned about fitness the woman a 90 pounds 5-feet-5-inches a was once diagnosed As possibly anorexic. She was a compulsive runner at least since her Days at Wellesley. It was commonplace for her to run four to six Miles at once or even on weekends to run to work on Wall Street and Back Home. Friends who have known the woman Over the years have described her As extremely competitive temperate occasionally stubborn but demanding of herself generous and when Lime permitted fun Loving. Quot Shi was a she is a real dedicated at achieving what she wanted she s what i d Call quietly aggressive Quot said a former classmate at Yale who asked not to be identified. Quot i would t be surprised if she ended up at a place like the world the attack on her in Central Park a she was according to some of the defendants statements tied up raped repeatedly and beaten on the head and body with a Brick a Lead pipe and rocks a occurred Between 9 and 10 . But for her running even at that hour alone and in an All but deserted area of the Park was not unprecedented. The victim whose survival has been ascribed in part to her Strong will a was created for seven weeks at metropolitan Hospital where she was discovered to have no memory of the attack. During the latter part of her stay at metropolitan she understood for the first time the reason for her hospitalization she offered her assistance to the District attorneys office. By the time she was transferred in june 1989 to Gaylord Hospital a medical rehabilitation Center in Wallingford conn., much of the Public interest in the Case had shifted to the sometimes conflicting accounts of the defendants and to the question of their admissibility in court. In mid november when the Jogger was released from Gaylord the Hospital issued a statement saying that her further recovery was Quot highly dependent Quot on the privacy accorded her assuring that privacy has since become the passionate objective of her family and of those who work with her or know her socially. The Jogger has not spoken to reporters and her parents declined to be interviewed for this article. Her two Brothers a lawyer in Hartford Conn and a prosecutor in Dallas did not return messages left at their offices Quot she wants anonymity especially since she got out of the Hospital and resumed her life Quot said Lisa Borowitz spokeswoman for Salomon Brothers where the Jogger returned to work in late november and was promoted to vice president in corporate finance in january. Quot her focus now is still on the recovery process. She just wants to continue along with her game Borowit said the woman Quot works a full Day Quot although fewer than the extended hours that were customary for her before the attack. Telephone Calls made to her through the firm s switchboard a apparently whether business related or not a Are routed to Borowitza a office a Quot corporate a Borowitz declined to describe the kind of work the Jogger is now doing at Salomon Brothers or to say whether she dealt directly with clients. Nearly each Day the victim takes a break for rehabilitation a particularly it is understood for deficits related to stress and Speed and for double vision despite the reservations of friends she is again living alone this time in an apartment near the financial District. And with friends or colleagues she is Back to running As much As five Miles a Day but not in Centra Park. Friday july 27, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 17
