European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 31, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Q 31%, a a Nuy i i i h pc at. 4 a a it hl&., a tuesday july 31, 1990 the stars and stripes w dear Ann Landers. Last weekend my husband and i went to visit his parents. Wei had a Nice time until sunday. His i parents were at Church and a a Ted was fishing. While looking for something to read i ran across a photo album. I opened it up and discovered it was the we Ding album from my husbands first marriage. I cannot describe my feelings of rage. _ Ted divorced this woman four years ago but she has made a career of keeping in close touch with every member of his family except the dog he died. It galls me that teds parents continue to Steep his old wedding picture hanging in the recreation room with All the other family photos. I had a huge fight with my Mother in Law about the album when she returned from Church. Tasked her to please throw it out. She said a this is my House. Done to Tell me what to keep and what to throw the argument got pretty hot and then she said a if you Don t like it you can my husband and i left. Now what id like some advice. Dear Chicago a a sec0nd w Chicago now you can Tell your Mother in Law that you Are ashamed of yourself for acting like a spoiled brat and that you Hope she will forgive you. You were completely out of line. Her songs first marriage is part of the family history and she has every right to keep the pictures. Sorry i can to think of a single thing to say in your defense. Dear Ann Landers in a recent column you declared that the word a anti was the longest word in the English language. Pardon me Ann but you Are mistaken. Take a look at Coonsis. And while we re into words you know of course that English spelling makes absolutely no sense. For exam pie How do you like this word with our crazy spelling it could be How did i come to that conclusion simple. Assume that the a a ghz is the same As in Hiccough the a a eau As in Beau the a a pts As in Tomaine the a a eight As in neighbor the a Mph the As in Phthisis and the Quot Ough Quot As in though. There you have is there any rhyme or reason to the spelling of cough through though and Tough in a sure the word hobbyists out there can come up with dozens of other examples. No question about it Ann spelling can be Tuff. A Herluf Christensen Council Bluffs Iowa dear Herluf thanks for letting me know that a ment arianism is not the longest word in the English language and the distinction belongs to pneuma soul a a lung disease. Believe it or not but Marcy sugar who came to work for me 17 years ago informed me that you spelled that word incorrectly. I swear i am not making this up Marcy says the Correct spelling is Neumon Oultram . You were awfully Good natured about this Gaffe when Marcy phoned and asked for verification of your letter. You told her that you had taught school for 30 years liked word games and it would be perfectly of to print your letter and your name Gaffe and All. So Here it is Herluf. You Are going to hear from Long lost relatives and kids you went to kindergarten with when this appears in print lots Luck a creators Syndicate Ike Page 11 is to details on mail forwarding provided i will cd fans Thio -____i____1. 1 a a. A. I will be leaving Germany soon and As a result have inquired about the process of mail forwarding i was told that after i filed the proper change of address cards with the mail clerk and Post office mail sent to my old Apo address would reach the mail clerk in the unit s mail room. The mail clerk must then Cross out the old address and hand write in the new address so that it can be forwarded. I think this system is both inefficient and absurd. With Modem technology As advanced As it is Why can t the Apos use stickers like the Post offices in the states first it is extremely time consuming for a mail clerk to hand address every single piece of mail that has to be forwarded. If i receive 30 pieces of mail a Day that could take up to a half hour of extra work not to mention the need to write in the new addresses of the countless others who have moved. Furthermore a mail clerk could have Sloppy or careless hand writing which would increase the probability of the mail never making it to its proper destination. Additionally i think it would be tempting for a mail clerk to just throw out some of the mail because of the extra work. After All How could you Ever prove it automatic computer generated labels such As the yellow adhesive ones used in the states would eliminate countless hours of work that could be better spent on other tasks. Also these types of labels Are Clear and legible and Are placed Over the old address. The current method of hand writing the new address is also impractical As sometimes there is no room left on the front of the envelope to squeeze in such information. Its also confusing to people handling the mail to see so Many Cross outs and different addresses. Is this outdated process used Only at army posts or is it done the same Way at air Force bases i realize that one can and should notify correspondents of a new address ahead of time but its impossible to notify every person who intends to Contact you by mail. One further question. I have received conflicting answers regarding the forwarding of fourth class mail. The unit mail clerk tells me none will be forwarded. The Post office clerk tells me it will be forwarded up to 60 Days. Another tells me up to one year. So my question is what a the real truth if fourth class mail cannot be forwarded or if it can Only be forwarded for a Short period of time can a person have it forwarded at his expense paying postage due upon receipt of it at his new address ? a name and location withheld editors note a Bill Tyler postal service analyst . Army postal group he usurer replies currently a consolidation of the 617-unit mall rooms is under Way in Usa eur. The consolidations will lend themselves to automation which could print address labels to Forward malt. In addition the Ijjas. Army postal group Europe is in the process of obtaining equipment which will permit automation of the mail director activities at the Apos resulting in procedures much like those recommended by the writer. The air Force which is normally far less dispersed than army units delivers mall through consolidated mall rooms postal service Center normally one per installation. They do use computers and address labels to Forward mail. Concerning the writer s comments about forwarding fourth class mall. The forwarding period for fourth class mall is one year except when forwarding instructions Are furnished by the sender for example the sender can request any class of mall be returned if not deliverable As addressed. Fourth class mall is endorsed a change of address due to official orders and is forwarded at no additional Cost. There Are no provisions for forwarding fourth class mail beyond the one year period.
