The following letter was written prior to last week s att Ettipio on the life of i fans Reusel a top or Man government terrorism fighter who miraculously escaped serious injury when a bomb demolished the ear he wus driving. While we rejoice in the recent arrests of nine members of Germany s red army faction Raf terrorist organization by East German officials there arc two troubling aspects to reactions to those arrests. First we Are again hearing that the Raf is mortally wounded and second credit for the arrests is Given to sex East German state Security Stasi members who having assisted their settling in East Germany arc now revealing the identification and location of Raf members. We should be careful in accepting those contentions. Concerning the first Point As til previous years following the arrests or deaths of sizable elements and or current leadership of the Raf some Media politicians and commentators arc Quick to announce the rafts expiration. It is therefore instructive to look at Raf activity after former announcements of its demise. Following the 1982 arrests of Raf leaders Christian Klar Brigitte Mohnhaupt and other principal members and the seizing of 13 arms depots throughout Germany a government official announced that the actions appeared a to have delivered a fatal blow 1o the Raf. After a period of regrouping the Raf conducted the following attacks a March 1984 robbed a Wurzburg Bank of 171,000 Marks. / a november 1984 stole 22 weapons from a Ludwigshafen weapons store. A 984 bombed the French embassy in Bonn and attempted to bomb the nato school in Oberammergau. A february 1985 assassinated German businessman Ernst Zimmerman i. A August 1985 killed a . Serviceman to use his id card to enter and bomb Rhein main a killing two. A july 1986 assassinated Sie Mcne a Kari Heinz by courts. A october 1986 assassinated German official Gerold von Braun Riihl. Two years of quiet again prompted officials to announce the passing of the Raf. Then a september 1988 tried to kill West German finance minister Hans tit Meyer. A november 1989 assassinated banking official Alfred her Hausen. A March 1990 targeted but called off attack against the German minister of agriculture Ignatz kick hic. Clearly in View of such a track record one should hesitate to announce that the latest successes Herald the demise of the of. Another reason for caution is that recent arrests appear to have collected Only Raf a a dropouts and of those captured a Susanna Albrecht 39, Sigrid Sternbeck 43, Inge Victot 46, Werner Lotze 38, Monika Helbig 36, Ekkehard sudent 49, Christine Dumelin 41, silk Maier Witt 40 a Only Viett and Sternbeck were considered to be pos news pm 237 2ss.2b2.226. 326 sports it 226. 269, 263. 332, 321. 221 features it 230 245 of 341 letters to editor. Star no Becky a last activity was in 1977. She denies and there is Little evidence that she was involved in the 1985 attack at Rhein main a. The average age of 42 seems to verify that the stomach for passionate violence decreases with age. Henning Beer 31, originally a courier is thought to have entered the terror risk ranks in reaction to his brother Wolfgang a death was never considered hard Core and was most probably hoping for a quiet life in East Germany. Also significant is that the younger generation and current leaders of the red army faction arc not included in the recent Bonanza of arrests. That group of Andrea Klump 32, Wolfgang Grams 36, Brigit Hoef cd 33, Sabine Callson 28, and especially suspected leaders Barbara Mayer 33, Horst Mayer 33, and Christoph so idler 31, remains very much Active and dangerous. Then there Are another 16 or so of hard Core members of which we know Little. The second consideration a crediting sex Stasi members with the recent arrests is questionable. We know for a fact that her East German neighbors after recognizing Inge i etly a photograph from one of the Lens of thousands of wanted posters recently distributed throughout East Germany stand to collect a 50,000 Mark Reward for reporting Vietts location to West German authorities. From information now available Only Henning Beers identification and location was provided by an sex Stasi official who presumably also will share in the Reward Money. Of the nine terrorists arrested Only Susanna Albrecht claims to have been helped by East German authorities and that in 1980, it is More most if not All of the recent arrests resulted from the distribution of West German wanted posters throughout East Germany. East germans had never had the Opportunity to see the posters before. The sequence of arrests would seem to con Vine in Gly dispute contentions that the terrorists and East German officials a previous or current a were in cahoots. Albrecht was arrested on june 6. Viett on june 12. Seck Endrott Gudenzi Lotze Helbig Demlein and Sternbeck on june 15, Maier Witt on june 16, and Beer on june.18. Each arrest along with the Contention that the arrests were possible because of an East German terrorism affiliation was widely publicized As they occurred. If after the june 6 and 12 arrests the remaining terrorists were in league with East German officials one must seriously question if they would wait around for the Knock on the door. The idea that those terrorists arrested later simply resigned themselves to being arrested is suspect considering that their surrender could have resulted in less severe punishment. The future will disclose the truth. However based on current information it is far More probable that arrests to Date and those to be expected result from East German citizens being motivated by 50,000 Mark rewards to recognize individuals from wanted posters.
