Dear Ann Landers i read your column and believe it expresses the Hopes and fears of us All including the so called silent majority. I guess Many if not most of your readers will not agree with what i am saying but i feel the need to say it i am a Lucky survivor of Active combat in world War ii. 1 do not understand Why so Many Young women today arc demanding the right to fight alongside men in combat duty. Do they want to experience the brutality of killing another human being do they want to Burn to death in a tank have their legs blown off in a Field or come Home in a body bag there arc Many ways women can serve their country with Honor. Throughout history women have represented gentleness compassion and sanity in a world mad with brutality and destruction. Theirs is an awesome responsibility. Without such ideals we Are in danger closing our humanity. I support equal rights for women. But the right to die Why i am 71 years old neither pacifist nor militant. Actually in Man Optimist who believes in the Young people of today. A concerned Grandfather dear concerned nobody wants to Burn to death in a tank have their legs blown off in a Field or come Home in a body bag. Women who join the armed services have chosen this career because they want to serve their country. They Are saying in effect a since we want equal treatment we feel that we have no right to ask for special privileges or safer i find this admirable. _ it creators Syndicate Civ. A a response to prior letter on pets criticized a recent letter to the editor raised the question of signed to waste or Effort being helpful to people a recent letter to the a editor raised the question of whether a service member could a pcs a pet i feel the writer received a very unhelpful reply that was filled with generalities and inaccuracies. For the Benefit of that writer and perhaps for numerous other service members forced to abandon a pet due to the ignorance and intolerance of military transportation and customs officials i feel compelled to address this Issue. It. Col. Berardino stated that dogs and cats arc the Only animals that do not have complicated controls restrictions and prohibitions for entry into the United states. This is nonsense. Any licensed animal importer can attest that it is far More complicated to import any mammal which includes dogs and cat than it is most reptiles that s snakes. Reptiles require no vaccinations or health certificates. They do not infect poultry or livestock hence they face no restrictions from the department of agriculture As Birds do. The Only a a complications in importing reptiles is that a permit May be required from the . Fisfis and wildlife service but Only if that particular species is classified As endangered or threatened. These lists Are available free of charge from the above Agency not the fictitious . Wildlife association a which supposedly requires permits animal except cats and dogs. Because West Germany is a member of the convention on the International Trade of endangered species snakes and other animals sold in pet shops Here would not be classified As threatened or endangered. Thus they should not normally require permits for entry into the United states. In the event a permit is required for a non endangered reptile it is fairly easy to obtain. In fact the fish and wildlife service gives special consideration to . Citizens returning from overseas residence with restricted animals and animal products. so Many other bureaucrats who answer stars and stripes letters with double talk this responder simply should have said that a the system Isnit de signed to waste or Effort being helpful to people with out of the Ordinary requests. No you can t ship your 3-Pound Snake ii our aircraft but if you get a Normal pet a 100-Pound pit Bull terrier w e will be Happy to ship it for this unjustified refusal to ship pet reptiles has undoubtedly led some personnel making a permanent change of station move to the option of last resort a carrying their animals aboard aircraft in their coat pockets. However the incident potential of an escaped Snake in an aircraft passenger Cabin could easily be avoided if the owner would have been allowed to ship his Snake in a secure escape proof Container in the cargo hold. A name and location withhold editor s note it. Col. Joseph j. Berardino. Deputy commander for air transportation 1iq 435lh tac Airlift Wing Mac replies now is a Good to remind military members of the restrictions concerning pet shipments in conjunction with a permanent change of station pcs. Transportation of household pets regardless of species normally is not authorized on Dod owned and controlled aircraft. However department of defense policy docs allow the shipment of dogs and cats a limited to two pets per family in conjunction with pcs moves. Additional information on this subject Cun he found in Dod 4515.13, air transportation eligibility and military Airlift command pamphlet 76-2, Mac pet information guide however since regulations and restrictions change you should confirm this information with your i mo/1-to/ prior to travel. Military members wanting to import a household pet other than a cat or dog should Contact their transportation or customs office Well in Advance to determine importation transportation requirements and restrictions. Any exceptions to Dod policy on pet shipment must be sent through channels to your respective service Headquarters. A . Needs to face Long term problems the past several years our politicians have filled our Media with emotional issues in which there arc two Clear sides and have avoided the major problems of our society. A politician is More Likely of be elected when the issues arc simplistic then he can choose the of the majority and show favourably in the polls. In the meantime America has become naive toward the issues As we watch our nation slip to the Wayside. Isnit it ironic that since the beginning of the 1990 elections we have moved from one emotional topic to another for example the candidates argued Over prayer in schools shortly later the supreme court was dealing with abortion and the newest Issue censorship to name a few. These Are things that Are clearly either anti constitutional or should be debated locally say in school boards or local communities certainly not in Congress or the White House. It has gotten to the Point that even cafes has fallen prey to a weak Media and banned 2 Crew albums. I wonder if anyone really cares about our National debt the deterioration of the environment the Lack of proper education and the bankruptcy of the savings and Loans. These arc the issues that Are going to follow us into the 21st Century and yet i Don t hear anyone even suggesting any solutions. 1 find it really sad that the polls show most people suspected Bush was lying in his Campaign Promise to never raise taxes but they elected him anyway. Where is everyone s morals when will people take a stand and Start demanding responsibility from our leaders i think there is Hope for America. The Public must begin demanding answers from politicians and take the to learn what these grayer issues really mean. Until this happens the politicians will be re elected problems in the United states will continue to mount and we will still argue Over what obscene Means.
