You won t feel very festive Here. But unless you Are dead of brain and heart you won t easily forget it. As the tourists sit Down in the Little theater in East Germany the chatter is not much different than in most places before the lights go out and the movie begins. The movie begins. It is a horror movie a documentary. About a concentration Camp. Quot in the beginning just a handful of political prisoners and homosexuals were sent to it Quot intones the narrator Over the thump and blare of Drums and horns the screaming 5/eg heels amid shouted proclamations about the Quot new pure Germany Quot when the movie is Over there is scarcely a t % f it a j s. V sound in the theater. The chitchat levers have dried up. Nothing Light to say. People have difficulty even looking at each other. Weimar was the Home of German humanism of poetic greats Goethe and Schiller of artists philosophers musicians and the highest aspirations of German kind. It was the Home of the Weimar Republic where a Brief Small Light called democracy sputtered out in a dark Rushing wind called Adolf Hitler. Formed in july 1937, this Camp tucked snugly away in the Forest outside Weimar came to be called Buchenwald. The big Camp in the Woods was found to do its Job More efficacious by than a Host of smaller Camps and would serve As a Model for larger slave labor and extermination Camps.
