At right a Toyota leads a Mercedes 2 and three porsche entries into a Bend. 10 text and photographs by Michael Abrams Aff photographer More than 30,000 sports car fans flocked to the famed Nair Burgering in West Germany s Eifel mountains for the sixth round of the world sports prototype championship this past weekend. Some were there to cheer the Sauber Mercedes team which is gunning for its second straight world title. Others with Union jacks proudly waving were there to support the British jaguars. And some wanted to see if the japanese Nissan and Toyota would finally give the Mercedes and Jaguar entries a run for their Money. But there was another compelling reason to be in the stands to say goodbye to porsche. It was the fans last Chance to see the porsche which once dominated the circuit Roar around a track on the continent in sports prototype racing. Porsche had announced earlier that after 1 25 victories and 1 2 manufacturer s titles since 1953, it was pulling out of sports prototype racing. Porsche s complaint was that Rule changes in 1991 would Render its cars uncompetitive. After 300 Miles or 106 laps a Mercedes Silver Arrow piloted by Jean Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi took the Flag at the finish line. Their Sauber teammates Jocher mass and Michael Schumacher were second. It was the liitle. Win Tor a Silver Arrow in six outings this sea in and it was the fourth one two sweep for Mercedes.
