Some were there to cheer the Sauber Mercedes team which is gunning for its second straight world title. Others with Union jacks proudly waving were there to support the British jaguars. And some wanted to see if the japanese Nissan and Toyota would finally give the Mercedes and Jaguar entries a run for their Money. But there was another compelling reason to be in the stands to say goodbye to porsche. It was the fans last Chance to see the porsche which once dominated the circuit Roar around a track on the continent in sports prototype racing. Porsche had announced earlier that after 1 25 victories and 1 2 manufacturer s titles since 1953, it was pulling out of sports prototype racing. Porsche s complaint was that Rule changes in 1991 would Render its cars uncompetitive.
