European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 26, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday september 26, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 25 racing Roundup Mansell s Victory was Well earned the portuguese grand prix has produced exciting races since its debut on the formula one Calendar in 1984, and last sundays grand prix on the Estoril circuit was no exception. It was close All the Way with the Ferrari and Mclaren Honda cars never More than a few seconds apart. The pit work from both teams was Brilliant too All stops Well under 10 seconds. The portuguese event provided a showcase for grand prix racing at its Best. The englishman Nigel Mansells first Victory of the season there was not Only a popular one but a Victory that was Well earned. Mansell who always strikes me As utterly determined but a bit heavy handed behind the wheel put his Ferrari on pole but he made a poor Start. It was so poor he nearly sent his teammate Alain Prost of France off the Road. Both recovered however and Mansell fought All the Way eventually passing brazils Ayrton Senna and remaining in front. The englishman had Good Luck along the Way especially late in the race when Back Marker Philippe Alliot of France could have put him out of action. The two cars touched wheels during a lapping Man Euver and Alliot who had made a mistake went off the track and out of the race. It was Only fair that Mansell whose Ferrari escaped undamaged was Able to continue in front and at full Speed. Although the race was red flagged with 10 laps to go because of Alex Caffins Accident Mansell had it in the bag and it was a solid win. But his teammate Prost probably lost second place because of the races premature ending. Prost was less than a second behind Senna and pushing him hard when the red Flag fell. It appeared that a Ferrari one two was in the making when the race was stopped. Prost needed that second place to stay in the running for the title. On the podium Senna was All smiles and Prost appeared clearly disappointed and that told the Story. With Only three races to go Senna has a Lead of 18 Points in total races and he is in a Strong position to capture the 1990 world driving championship. At this stage however the ?obest-11-results? ruling comes into play meaning that a Driver can count Only his Best 11 results from 16 grand prix races. Senna has failed to score Points in two races and has three third place finishes so at this stage he must drop four Points from one of his third place races. Prost meanwhile has failed to score Points in three races so he has no Points to drop at this stage. So the Points score actually stands Senna 74, Prost 60, but that a still a healthy margin for Senna. In the Victory column so far this season Senna leads with six wins Prost has four Riccardo Patrese of Italy and Thierry Boutsen of Belgium both Williams Ren Ault have one each and Mansell has one. One final round remains in Europe and that is sundays Spanish grand prix at Jerez de la Frontera a then come the japanese and australian races to close out the season. Randy Barnett jul Benetton a Alessandro Nannini Ferrari a Jean Alesi. The Benetton Ford team confirmed last week that Alessandro Nannini has rejected overtures from Ferrari and has decided to remain with Benetton for the 1991 season. A Nannini will continue his partnership with Nelson Piquet a the Benetton Ford release read. A although it is every italian racers dream to drive for the prancing horse Alessandro has not allowed his heart to Rule his the release also quoted Nannini As saying a i believe Benetton is the team of the future. After weighing both Ferrari and Benetton opportunities carefully i decided to stay at Benetton because i have grown with the team and know them All personally a from the Benetton family to the mechanics. I want to be part of the Success that i know we will Ferrari which said at Monza that it would not consider the Frenchman Jean Alesi for 1991, announced last week that it was indeed signing Alesi to a 1991 contract and that Alesi would partner his countryman Alain Prost for next season. Alesi had been ruled out earlier at Ferrari because of his supposedly Iron Clad 1991 contract with Williams. Because of this Ferrari reportedly had bought Nanni Nils contract at Benetton for $2 million putting the italian on the Ferrari team. But then a last minute development allowed Ferrari to try for a new Deal with Williams a an apparently super financial offer a and Alesi has the Job with Ferrari. Alesi who drives for Tyrrell this season will replace Mansell at Ferrari and rumours Are going around that Mansell will put his retirement plans into Mothballs to drive for the Williams Renault team next season. The Tyrrell team meanwhile announced during the portuguese grand prix weekend that it had signed the italian Driver Stefano Modena to replace Alesi. Contracts obviously appear to mean Little or nothing in today a world of Ultra High finance formula one dealing. And that brings us to a statement from Scotland a Jackie Stewart a Driver who certainly prospered in formula one. But he never had a contract.
