European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 29, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Ann Landers dear Ann Landers i just read solution to the a buy me. A syndrome that children sometimes fall into when shopping. I would like to offer a solution that worked for me. We have three boys 6,8 and 10. For the last three years we have Given them weekly allowances. Fifty percent is for spending 40 percent for saving and 10 percent to be Given to the Church. We pay \ them extra for work they do beyond their regular chores. This is Money they can spend on whatever they want. We have Laid Down a Rule if they want something that is allowable but we feel unnecessary they have to buy it with their own Money. Now instead of demanding things they look for the item they want Check the Price to see if they think its Worth it and decide if they have enough Money to buy it. Then they have to make up their minds whether or not they really want it or if they a rather save the Money for something else. When they decided that they wanted a Nintendo they pooled their Money for months until they had enough to buy it. They know that if they want games they must spend their own Money because i wont buy them luxuries. This system has not Only eliminated Many demands but has turned our children into thoughtful Consumers a something that will serve them Well All their lives a a it a working in California dear California what Lucky kids to have been born into your family your plan sounds terrific. I heartily recommend it. Read on for another example of Wise parental strategy dear Ann Landers recently i read in your column about the Mother who said that when she and her children go shopping they decide if its a a looking Day or a a buying i did the same when my youngsters were growing up and it worked wonders. I have four sons. Every saturday i gave them each an allowance. I taped a list of chores to the refrigerator. All were assigned. At the end of the week i paid the children in quarters. Then wed Check the list. For each chore that Wasny to done they a have to give me Back a Quarter. I never scolded them. I just took their quarters. Needless to say after a while i Wasny to getting Many quarters. 3 i started this system when each child turned 2. They received $1 a week. The 2-year-old had four chores picking up toys saying a please a saying a thank you and saying nightly prayers. If he forgot just once during the week it Cost him one Quarter. Each child had his own log Book. At the end of the year wed sit Down together and Check the books. The one who had paid me the fewest number of quarters would receive a $1 raise. If anyone had outside activities or spent the night with a Friend he had to pay his brother a Quarter to do his chores for him. What fun we had at the same time it helped make them responsible adults. Our youngest son is 22 now and we Are extremely proud of All our children. If you a like to print this letter feel free but hold the name. Just sign me i mrs. J. From Pennsylvania dear mrs. A cheers from Chicago on an excellent blueprint for teaching kids How to be responsible adults. My hat is off to you. Creators Syndicate Ike european Edmon circulation 170,000 col. Gene e. A i a a military spouse preference questioned i think the department of defense should require All civilian personnel offices to place the following on All overseas recruitment notice All spouses of civilian personnel will be considered for employment Only after a position has been turned Down by All military spouses regardless of qualification. Any Hope your spouse might Harbor for employment Here should be based on the knowledge that Only x number of civilian spouses Are employed out of a total spouse employment Foxx. This notice should be sent along with All offers of employment to civilian employees. It seems a great Deal of Effort is made to conceal this fact. An Engineer recently returned to his previous position m the United states after completing Only half his tour. His previous office decided to pay for his return in order to have him Back. This was at least partially based on his wife Slack of being Able to secure a position at this location. Considering she had a masters degree and had taught at the University level had 20 years a men miss their children too a recent stars and stripes desert shield edition had a Quarter Page article entitled a deployed women keep kids close in their i believe your article Only serves to perpetuate antiquated ideas and roles for women. In this Day and age it have been better just to discuss How All of us miss our children and loved ones i think an article written along those lines would have done More to promote Equality among the sexes. I got the distinct impression that women somehow miss their children More than men do. I miss my children dearly a my daughter starting Junior High school my son trying out for and making the football team. From the looks of it i May not even get to see him play a game this year or see my daughter act for the drama club. When it comes to missing your loved ones desert shield is Tough on All of us not just the women. A a master sgt. Ernest r. A name and location withheld editors note a Shirley Wehr personnel staffing specialist civilian personnel division Deputy chief of Staft person incl he Usa eur replies the writer expresses frustration with the policy which gives military spouses preference for initial employment in the commuting area of the sponsors duty station. It May help the writer if the reasons underlying the policy were known. The program was established to alleviate some of the Burden military members and their families encounter due to relocation and very limited prospects for employment outside or . Government agencies. The writer seems to imply that military spouses arc hired a regardless of this is not so military spouses have to be among the Best qualified candidates in a competitive Merit promotion action in order to be selected. What May have contributed to the inability of the spouse of the civilian employee hired from conus Continental United states to find employment is the hiring freeze currently in i text within the department of defense. Under this freeze personnel from external sources May not be hired unless an exception to the freeze is obtained or the particular Job category is exempted from the freeze. One or the exemptions applies to military spouses in Uconus outside of Continental United state who can be hired under the on for two Rule one fill for each two vacancies. We have submitted a request to expand the exemption for military spouses to include All family members our request has been endorsed by the department of the army and is now with the office of the Secretary of writer wants Rule change i am Happy that i am not still on Active duty.
