European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 1, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday october 1, 1990 the stars and stripes a Page 11 letters no critical of disloyal complainers i am writing in response to several recent letters from soldiers who Are frustrated by the army. While some of these soldiers May have legitimate complaints stemming from problems in their units Many i believe Are just disloyal complainers. We All know the Type. There seems to be a reversal of traditional military values in the younger generation of today a soldiers. The ideals summarized by John f. Kennedy a demand a a ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country a seem to have been replaced by the Ideal of a a what a in it for me a one of our published soldiers went so far As to say that he did not want to Complete his initial enlistment he just wanted an honorable discharge and his College fund benefits. This Soldier typical of Many others wants something for nothing. These soldiers stand up boldly and proudly for their right to complain without reprisal. Nobody disputes this right but it is the Soldier who stands up for his or her moral obligation and personal responsibility to support the unit that you will not hear from in your column a because he or she is trying to contribute to the Success of the unit not trying to break Down the cohesion of it. It is that Soldier who is supporting his commander 100 percent of the time not Only when he agrees with the commander. One writer seems to think that he can decide which i have just a couple of simple questions. First Why is the bread that we buy in the commissary stale i know that we Are not in the states but Why can to the bread be fresh like it is there i am from Mannheim. The cafes bakery is just about 20 minutes Down the Road at or Linstadt. Hopefully the delivery system is not so bad that it takes enough Days to make the bread stale. If the preservative formula for making the bread is different than in the states then change the formula. The second question is related to the first Why is the milk we buy usually just a couple of Days away from the expiration Date this makes you buy less milk than you really want knowing that it might spoil if you buy enough for More than a couple of Days. If you plan it wrong and buy too much milk you will probably have to throw it away and go buy More. In the states you usually have about a week before the expiration Date. Hopefully this letter might stir some action so As to better serve the cafes customer. A name withheld Mannheim West Germany editors note a master sgt. Dayton p. Strickland customer relations he cafes Europe replies a Hitler pledge recalled iraqis claim that it does not intend to invade any other country is reminiscent of when Hitler reassured the world that he would not go beyond Czechoslovakia. Think about it. A Elton Nesselrodt Kaiserslautern West Germany orders he will obey and which ones he will choose to ignore. This May be True. But if he has a typical Chain of command he is not getting away with As much As head like us to believe. Laws of land warfare Only allow soldiers to disobey those orders that Are illegal Only after a tactful verification of the orders intent. Many of your recent letters complain that soldiers Are not being Given respect and they Are demanding that their problems be Given attention. These Are very legitimate demands but some soldiers want these needs to be met to the extent of being pampered. The Soldier who works hard to prevent problems gets to spend time training and accomplishing the Mission. The Soldier who lacks responsibility in his personal affairs distracts himself and his leaders from the tasks directly related to Mission accomplishment. These published complainers do not represent All of our Young soldiers we know that. As the cold War ends and the number of soldiers serving in the army is reduced it will be the ones who found a solutions to every problem and not problems with every solutions who will endure the tests of Force reduction and limited promotion opportunities and become the leaders of the a cleaner meaner army of the ?T90s. A sgt. 1st class Michael r. Laney Baum older West Germany our bakery in or Linstadt produces bread five Days a week monday through Friday.
