The Bill approved by voice vote and sent to the Senate modernizes and strengthens protections previously granted for those called to Active duty. Sponsors said the activation of reserves in the persian Gulf crisis makes an overhaul of the Law necessary. One provision prevents the eviction of a service member a family from a rented Home or apartment. While current Law prohibits eviction without a court order the Protection Only extends to leases where the monthly payment is less than $150. The Bill would extend the ceiling to $1,200. Another provision is that when reservists return to their jobs employers must provide health insurance benefits As if there had been no Job interruption. Insurers would be required to reinstate the coverage As if no military service had occurred. Employment Protection in current Law Only guarantees a reservist a return to a prior Job for 90 Days of service. The House Bill would extend the Protection for whatever period the service member was on Active duty. A special provision for health care professionals would relieve them from paying liability insurance premiums such As those for malpractice insurance. The coverage would be suspended for the Active duty period. The Bill would postpone court actions for damages while the insurance was suspended.
