A Cincinnati outfielder Eric Davis was hospitalized in Cerious condition saturday night after insuring a kidney in the first inning of the reds world series sweeping Victory Over the Oakland athletics. The reds said that Davis was in the intensive care unit of Merritt Hospital and was expected to remain there for three to seven Days. A a it a very very bad a reds team physician or. Michael Lawton said of the injury. A a he a going to be in the Hospital for quite a Davis bruised a kidney and his rib Cage while trying to make a diving catch of a Fly Ball. Teammate Billy Hatcher sustained a severe Bruise on his left hand when he was hit by a pitch in the top of the same inning. Davis tried to catch Willie Mcgee a slicing drive to left Field but dropped the Ball when he rolled Over jamming his Elbow into his midsection. He was prone for several minutes but amazingly finished the inning. He had to be helped to the clubhouse by two trainers after leaving the Field. The reds said Davis was urinating blood when he entered the clubhouse. Hatcher returned to the stadium in time for the pos game Celebration and might have been Able to play again but Davis injury would have kept him out for the rest of the series if the a a had won saturday and managed to Send the play offs Back to Cincinnati. A Eric have played a reds manager Lou Piniella said after the game. A if we did no twin tonight i might have had to suit up. He was a bad the reds though were so Good in this series that even losing two thirds of their starting Outfield when the game was Only an inning old did no to Stop them. This Model of the big red machine won with spare parts. A we won it All by having players who could come in and do the Job a Piniella said in a mobbed clubhouse. A i done to know what would have happened tomorrow and i done to care now. I expect be ready for opening the reds rallied to win 2-1 for the amazing sweep when their replacements came up big in the eighth inning. Herm Winningham who replaced Hatcher in Center Laid Down a perfect bunt and Glenn Braggs Davis replacement in left tied the score with a Force play grounder. A a we be overcome All obstacles All year a said Chris Sabo who went 9-for-16 in the series. A a we be won without Eric and Billy Hatcher had seven hits in his first seven at bats in the series and finished 9-for-12. He also hit a two run Homer in the playoffs against Pittsburgh. A i feel great right now a he said a few minutes after the reds won their first world series since 1976. A i started the year in Pittsburgh As a Reserve outfielder reds Eric Davis is helped from the Oakland coliseum after first inning injury. And end it with a world series ring. Not it was Davis though who started the reds on their Way to one of the greatest upsets in world series history. The a a were 3-1 favourites to win the series and the Odds were 40-1 against the reds sweeping. And one reason was that Davis was a physical mess. He had a sore left shoulder aching wrists and stiff Ankles. He was taped from head to toe. In the playoffs Davis was 4-for-23 with two Bis and Cost the reds a game with a poor defensive play. But in game 1 of the world series he hit a two run Homer off Stewart in the first inning. All of a sudden Stewart was just another Pitcher and the a a were just another team. A that Home run was the biggest hit of the series a first baseman Todd Zenzinger said. A it showed everybody we could beat these Guys and we just took off from there. In a sorry he be Here with us now to became part of Cincy Arsenal Oakland Calif. Apr the lost Art of Bunting won the world series for the Cincinnati reds on saturday night. Two bunts set up a two run eighth inning that gave the reds a 2-1 Victory Over Oakland and a shocking sweep of the seemingly mighty athletics. The reds who led the National league in batting had 88 sacrifices this season second in baseball behind the Pittsburgh pirates. And when the key moment came in the eighth Herm Winningham and Paul of Neill executed their bunts to perfection. A when you have Speed and Lay Down a bunt a lot of funny things can happen Over the course of a ballgame a reds manager Lou Piniella said. A and its been very advantageous to use the bunt a lot this with Oakland leading 1-0, Barry Larking Sladoff single in the eighth was Cincinnati a sixth hit of the game. Winningham who had two sacrifices in 177 at bats this year fell behind 0-2. He then put Down a perfect bunt that rolled Midway Between the Mound and the plate and beat Catcher Jamie quirks throw to first. Piniella said he knew he could count on his players to execute when it mattered most. A we stressed All our fundamentals a he said. A a we be had our players out at numerous times Over the summer working on Bunting. Its part of the fundamental work we be done since the Start of Spring on the very next pitch of Neill bunted Back to Stewart. Of Neill had sacrificed Only once in 564 times up during the season but on saturday night it looked As if he did it All the time. A a it a something you work on every Day a of Neill said. A you just done to do it very the Ball rolled Back to Stewart who fired to first in plenty of time. But the throw was wild to the foul Side pulling Wille Randolph just a tiny bit off the bag in the opinion of Umpire Randy Marsh. Of Neillis bunt loaded the bases for Glenn Braggs whose bouncer to shortstop scored the tying Page 21 now. I guess the a a Are for the reds it was their ninth straight world series Victory a Streak that started in the Days of the big red machine. They took advantage of stewarts first error of the season and scored in the eighth on Glenn Braggs rib Force out with the bases loaded and Hal Morris sacrifice Fly Barry Larkin singled to left to Start the eighth the fourth straight inning Cincinnati s Lead off hitter reached base. Herm Winningham then reached when he beat a i a throw to first on a sacrifice bunt. Paul d Neill then bunted to the left Side of the to found. Stewart fielded it cleanly but his throw pulled second baseman Willie Randolph off first loading the bases. Braggs who tied game 2 with a rib fielders Choice grounded to shortstop Mike Gallego who flipped to Randolph for the Only out. Morris flied deep to right scoring Winningham. Stewart who ruined himself with control problems in game 1, did not walk a Batter until starting the sixth inning with four straight balls to Larkin. Winningham filling in for Hatcher who was hit on the left hand by an 0-2 pitch in the top of the first followed with a hit and run single and Larkin raced to third when left fielder Rickey Henderson bobbled the Ball for an instant. Stewart retired of Neill on a Popup leaving him l-for-12 in the series. But Braggs subbing for Davis Drew a four pitch walk that loaded the bases. That brought up Morris a .417 Batter in the playoffs yet Only l-for-13 in the series at that Point. Morris took a Ball and then hit the next pitch sharply but it went right to second baseman Randolph who started a smooth double play. Chris Sabo the hero of game 3 with two Home runs tried to rally the reds in the seventh when he led off with a drive that hit six inches from the top of the left Field Fence for a double. Todd Benzinger did his Job pulling a grounder that moved Sabo to third with one out. Stewart then retired Joe Oliver on a grounder that held Sabo at third and got Mariano Duncan on a Fly to Center. Rijo was in control after issuing a pair of two out walks in the second inning. He struck out six of the next nine he faced. By then though the athletics had one run a which was one More than they got off Rijo in seven innings of the opener. After Rickey Henderson hit an easy Fly to Davis to Start the athletics first Mcgee hit a sinking liner to left Center. Davis was off at the crack at the Bat and Dove at the last instant dropping the Ball As he rolled Over and injured his ribs and a kidney forcing him to leave the lineup. If this had been football the catch might have stood because As referees Are fond of saying the ground cannot cause a Fumble. In baseball though the Ball must be held and the umpires ruled Mcgee Safe when it popped out. With two outs Piniella elected to intentionally walk left handed hitting Harold Baines. Lansford spoiled the strategy however singling up the Middle to score Mcgee without a throw. The reds made a bid to tie it the second and Mcgee foiled them. With two outs Sabo singled and Benzinger followed with a drive to deep right Center. Mcgee showing the Speed and jump that Canseco failed to get on a decisive Ball in game 2, sprinted into the Gap and made the catch with a backhanded grab inches off the ground. Mcgee has been a Center fielder his entire career but he made this play racing Over from right
