European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 31, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Ann Landers dear Ann Landers the letter from the woman whose son received a stiff prison sentence after confessing to Mo-1 Lesting a child hit a nerve. I have worked with adolescent paedophiles and dealt with the problem in my own family. We were Lucky Ann. We discovered our songs first attempted molestation within minutes. He spent a year in intensive treatment and now seems to be growing up normally. There is no guarantee however that he wont have a relapse. We never leave him alone with Small children. He is not allowed to take any Job that brings him into Contact with youngsters. When he has children of his own you can be sure that his father and i will keep our eyes open for any hint of trouble. What the Mother of the 17-year-old boy has not faced is that this was probably not the first time her son has molested a child. Most molesters Start in their Early teens and Are caught As adults after they already have done considerable damage. You were right Ann when you said the effect on the child who is a a touched can be horrendous. In a sorry that the woman a son is receiving no treatment in prison but you can bet that when he gets out he will know there Are consequences for his behaviour. The Mother blames the prison sentence for a ruining a Young Many a life a but he needs to remember it was his decision to do something he knew was wrong that actually ruined his life. Our son also tried to blame everyone else for what he did and the devastation that followed. The punishment though exceedingly harsh will remind the perpetrator that antisocial acts have consequences. A mom who a been there too in Atlanta dear Atlanta mom i certainly Admire your ability to be objective. You have written a valuable letter and i thank you. The following letter supports what you say. Dear Ann Landers this is in response to the Mother of the 17-year-old sex offender in Arizona. She says her son was sent to prison for 12 years for his a first As a therapist who has worked with sex offenders for 10 years i can Tell you that by the time a sex offender is caught he has committed More crimes than he will own up to. One 1984 study of 232 child molesters whose victims were under 14 years of age revealed that they had attempted a total of 55,250 molestations and completed 38,727. Their total number of victims was 17,585. They averaged 238 attempted and 167 completed child molestations each. The average number of victims was 75.8 each. The average adolescent sexual offender May be expected to commit 380 sex crimes in his lifetime. There is a very Good likelihood that the Young Man in Arizona had several victims before he was finally caught. Many sex offender treatment programs use a disclosure polygraphs to break through the entrenched denial system of a sex offender. The plea should not be for compassion but that while this Young Man is in prison he will receive treatment and counselling so that when he is released he will not repeat his sick behaviour. A Ann Wright m.a., clinical member of the association for the treatment of sexual abusers Ore. Dear Ann Wright your statistics Are impressive and your plea is compelling. Thank you for writing. The writer complained about All sorts of people making noise Down the hallway from people checking in to children to even Church groups. It appeared to me and a lot of other people who read the article that he was just looking for people to complain about. The writer acts As if he is the Only one that this has Ever happened to. This happens All the time All Over the world a military establishments As Well As civilian ones. He then states that he called the maps and the first time they did not respond. Let me Tell you about the maps in Garmisch. Because of the size of the military strength in the area it was determined by higher that they Only needed one patrol with one person in it. So maybe that one patrol was out with a building that was left open and they could not find someone to secure it or they were at a traffic Accident where there was a real problem a somebody Hurt or somebody stranded without transportation. The second time he called them he stated a the maps responded 10 minutes later with one i do not know what organization he is in but the last time i checked we were an equal Opportunity employer. If the person has been trained on a Job then they will perform the Job regardless of sex race Creed or nation origin. Maybe the writer likes to stereotype and thinks that female maps should All be working Day shifts looking pretty As they Man the school crosswalks and that on Midnight shifts it should be 6-foot gorillas with hairy Knuckles walking the Halls looking for someone to hit with a Nightstick for walking too loud. Let me close by saying that i have All the Faith in people who work for me not a lot of Faith in some of the complaints they have to respond to. They All know that regardless of the situation they can Call me at any time if they need help and i will always be there. The next time you or anybody else has a problem with the Way the maps handle something please Call me and i will solve the problem or give you a More in depth answer of situations that you could be unaware of. I will not apologize for ensuring that All the people who work for me Are treated equally and that they All pull the same work Load. A Sec. Wendel g. Fugate operations sergeant Garmisch my station threat to Baghdad Betty upsets Reader in a writing in reference to the article a Baghdad Betty singing same old i was very disturbed when i got to the part where a sergeant said a i want to go up there and visit her personally. To shoot As a Soldier and an no id like to say to this sergeant that i thought his comment was very unprofessional and to me showed his Lack of military bearing and discipline. While in a sure that Betty has potential to undermine the troops morale she has this sergeants he needs to remember his Overall duty and his responsibility As a Soldier a fighter a Leader. Not Only is he there to defend he a there to Lead and to train subordinates. Bettye a broadcasts be threatening to the Point of wanting to shoot her if All cos keep that in mind. This sergeant frightens me because i done to know if he wants to shoot her for the morale of his troops or for his. I Hope that in a not the Only one who took notice of his remark. I Hope that someone the officers and senior enlisted sees this As an indicator of the morale and attitude that our soldiers will probably have in the near future and begin to take some kind of preventive measures. Communication is the key. A staff sgt. Sheila Gentry Vaihinger Germany a writer questions family advocacy s role family advocacy has great to advertisements that Lead you to think you can really help some poor abusive family by simply calling. What a joke. I knew of a situation where a Mother was abusing her Small son. He often had unnatural numerous bruises All Over his body. My Friend was often wakened to the noise of these vicious attacks. I counselled her a Call family advocacy a enlightening her to the wonderful promises they make on an. She called and was told they can do nothing and to Call the maps the next time it happened. So she did. However when the maps arrived the session was Over so they do anything either and the Mother began harassing my Friend because she assumed it was she who had called. What is family advocacy for they encourage you to report stuff then do nothing and you risk being the object of the offensive persons Wrath.
