European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 31, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Caught in the act Sinead of Connor by Anita Gosch staff writer first lets get the matter of looks out of the Way. Sin6ad that a Shi nay id o Connor is Bald and Reed thin. Naturally what first comes to mind at a concert by the 23-year-old Irish Singer Are the comparisons a a an upright ant with Green Granny shades Quot or Quot a praying mantis in or with her spastic Arm and wrist movements she May look like a a Bald Skinny Joe Cocker Quot As one observer at of Connors recent show in Dortmund Germany put it. Then there a the business of her presumed controversial actions. Of Connors refusal in May to perform on saturday night live with off color comedian Andrew Dice Clay As guest Host and her threat in August to walk out on a concert in new Jersey if the National Anthem was played beforehand no doubt alienated o Connor from certain segments of society. Which is too bad for neither her actions nor her appearance has anything to do with the real issues o Connors extraordinary voice which can move easily from a barely audible whisper to a raging Banshee Wail her ability to keep an audience spellbound a and virtually silent during the quiet moments of her show her lyrics intimate responses to a life marked by pain and betrayal and her music which ranges from Irish Folk ballads to Bass heavy dance pop to guitar crunching Rock. Of Connor who has been called the Quot first new superstar of the decade Quot is a Singer in the tradition of the Best soul and blues artists you know she Means and feels every Mournful word she sings. Of Connor grew up in a Catholic Home. Her parents separated when she was 8 and after starting out on a Road toward delinquency she was sent by her father from one Reform school to another. Singing indeed is a catharsis for her a necessary release of pent up emotions. As she said in an interview with rolling Stone Magazine she turned to singing because Quot. I could actually express the pain that i Felt with my voice because i did no to have the facilities to express the pain that i Felt in any other Way. It was just All bubbling up in there and it had to come when she Wasny to singing on stage in Dortmund of Connor would break into erratic almost robotic dance routines during which she appeared completely unaware of her audience a much like those seemingly lost souls who dance by themselves in the Back of concert Halls during shows. In those intimate moments o Connors Granny shades helped keep the audience further removed. At times she would rub herself Over her belly and thighs and during the latter half of the show she removed her oversized Green to shirt to reveal a Black Bra above her jeans. It was hardly Likely however that she was doing what some might perceive As an attempt at a Madonna rip off the stage was probably just too hot for her. Of Connors Dortmund show was Short a just Over an hour a but she managed to fit in 13 songs tunes from both her 1987 debut album the lion and the cobra and the 1990 follow up the no. 1 album i do not want what i Haven to got. Songs included the Ballad feel so different As an appropriate concert opener the rocking the emperors new clothes her Prince penned no. 1 hit nothing compares 2u, and her tour de Force the last Day of our acquaintance a song she dedicated to Quot All the Young ladies Quot about a Young woman who was deserted by the one she loved. She also introduced a new song my special child a Beautiful Ballad about her 3-year-old son Jake. Of Connor performs in London at the Royal Albert Hall nov. 6. New anthology a Zep maniacs fantasy getting the led out . Considine Baltimore Sun Jason Bonham was Only a member of led Zeppelin once filling in for his father the late drummer John Quot Bonzo Quot Bonham at the Atlantic records 40th anniversary concert last year. But even a single Days tenure is membership enough for some Zep fans. Whenever he Tours with his own band Bonham said he a faced with kids in the audience Yelling Quot get the led out Quot although led Zeppelin broke up shortly after the death of John Bonham in 1980, its popularity continues unabated. But considering that almost 12 years have passed since the band last went into a recording studio it is unlikely that there will Ever be a new album. Last week however Atlantic records released the next Best thing led Zeppelin. A boxed 54-song anthology it is a Zep maniacs fantasy featuring Superior sound digitally remastered by Zep guitarist Jimmy Page elaborate liner notes including essays by former rolling Stone Magazine reporter Cameron Crowe blues scholar Robert Palmer and a tvs a Kurt lode Rand almost five hours of prime led Zeppelin. The compilation set has a fairly stiff Price a $69.98 is the suggested retail Price for the four cd set and $54.98 for cassette or up. Obviously assembling the set was a great marketing move but that Isnit really what prompted Page to go Back and remaster these recordings. Instead As he said from London what motivated him was that Quot the cd that came out were a great disappointment to me Quot i did no to have anything to do with the mastering of them and some of them were Good and other ones fell Flat on How they ought to have sounded. I really wanted to have a crack at improving the Overall sound spectrum of one thing Page did t do was pull a lot of previously unreleased material out of the vaults. In fact the Only songs included on the new set that weren to on the bands albums Are hey hey what can i do a song which had heretofore been available Only As the a Side to immigrant song and two recordings from a 1969 British broadcasting corp. Radio broadcast White summer Black Mountain slide which features a lengthy virtuosic Page guitar Solo and Robert Johnson a travelling Riverside blues which entered the billboard album Rock charts at no. 15. Page would have included other rarities except there weren to any. Quot the Only things that were left Over and had Complete vocals All came out on Coda Quot he said. Quot which was a posthumous album obviously John was gone needless to say led zeppelins ongoing popularity has sparked endless speculation Over whether the band would reassemble for a who style comeback tour. So far led Zeppelin has Only performed twice since John Bonham s death first at live Aid with drummers Phil Collins and Tony Thompson and then at the Atlantic 40th anniversary show with Jason Bonham. Robert Plant zeppelins Singer has repeatedly dismissed reunion rumours. A that will never happen Quot he said in Cleveland recently Quot because Bonzon a not wednesday october 31, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 17
