A the Way it s worked out its really been a special thing for the Sutton  what  his hiring was anything but special. He had been at Kentucky perhaps the greatest Job in College basketball. A Job so great that Sutton said he would crawl to Lexington from Arkansas if the offer came his Way. It became the Job that nearly ended his career. Not because the wildcats weren t successful a they were 9040 in his four years a but because of off the court problems. In the Spring of 1989, Sutton resigned. A Short time later Kentucky was placed on three years probation by the Mcaa. Sutton was not found guilty of any infractions and insists he did nothing wrong. But he was out of coaching relegated instead to serving As a consultant for Nike shoes. He travelled the country giving clinics and watching a ton of basketball but he was t coaching. He Wasny to doing what he had done since 1958 when he served As a graduate assistant under Henry Iba at Oklahoma state. He says now that the year away from the Bench was a great Benefit. But when he heard at the final four that Leonard Hamilton had decided to leave Oklahoma state to take the Job at Miami Sutton nearly burst. He had wanted the Job in 1972 when he was at Creighton but the cowboys hired Guy Strong instead. Sutton eventually went to Arkansas and developed a National Power. The Oklahoma state Job came open twice while he was there but he had a Good thing going. He was at Kentucky when the Oklahoma state Job opened again in 1986. Again there Wasny to any reason to leave Ana the cowboys hired his assistant coach Hamilton. So when Sutton heard the news about Hamilton leaving he ran to the Telephone and called his wife. Sutton a problems at Kentucky and reports of a drinking problem however prompted school president Jolgui Campbell to work deliberately Campbell says he did More research on Sutton than on any employee he had Ever hired and came away satisfied. At his hiring in april Sutton said he recognized three years ago that he Dia have a drinking problem and that he has addressed it. He also said he Learned lessons from the Kentucky experience that will serve him Well in this Job. Sutton a objective now is to go Forward.
