European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 15, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 10 columns the stars and stripes thursday november 15,1990carl Rowan Bush is president who cannot be believed president Bush has been assailed with Good reason by americans of every race and class who deplore his veto of the civil rights act of 1990. Some say that this Man who promised to be a Kinder and gentler than Ronald Reagan is in fact a colder and Krueler exploiter of a the White others say that he is fanning the flames of racial passion in a society that already is cursed by racial polarization. Still others say that while Bush is willing to give Blacks More than an equal Chance to die in the deserts of saudi Arabia and Kuwait he sabotages a Law that would give Blacks other minorities and women an equal Chance to hold jobs in the peaceful confines of America. Some say that Bush has revealed his a True colors with a veto that panders to White superiority to the greed of big business and that in doing so he has closed the door on any Chance of dealing with problems of education and poverty in a Way that will enable the United states to Ever again compete with countries such As Japan and a United Germany. I endorse every one of those criticisms of this terribly disappointing president. But i have a More profound reason for embracing fear and contempt of the Bush administration i can to believe anything this president says. There is a serious character flaw in a Man who throws out rhetoric of steel resolve on great social and economic issues and then Abandons his vows on some challenges flip flops on others and finally Knuckles under to the advice of a Palace guard that is made up of ruthless but unwise men. A lot of republicans Are dismayed that after months of a no new taxes declarations Bush slips were parted by a sea of red Ink bringing Forth a murmured Appeal for new taxes. I never believed Bush a grandstanding on taxes. I first sensed that George Bush sword is not his Bond when he labelled himself a the education president and then sent to Congress a spending proposal on education that was stinger than the one submitted by Reagan who had tried to wipe out the department of education. No matter what platitudes Bush spew Martin Gottlieb out Quot Forth he is not a Friend of Public education or of the poor children who Are so desperately in need of help. Bush utters great lines about How his stance on taxes is to protect a the working men and women of but the budget deficit reduction fiasco has made it Clear that Bush a greatest commitment is to protect the Rich and super Rich even at the Price of greater miseries for the aged and the prisoners of poverty. Bush also has billed himself As a the environmental president a but his actions indicate that the most Virgin forests and Pristine Waters Are in peril if his entrepreneurial friends see a Way to make a Buck there. George Bush has a Knack for uttering duplicitous rhetoric about everything of vital interest to Ordinary americans. That makes him a lot More dangerous and watchable than Reagan who announced himself As an advocate of some deplorable policies and then did what he said he would do. Bush a veto of a fair and simple civil rights Bill has led me to one conclusion i can never again take to heart any Promise or pledge that he makes. North America Syndicate great american charlatan not forgotten Good an excuse to write about has isl the Revenue a to. Of Good an excuse to write about Ronald Reagan. He a written a Book and he a doing interviews. So he a fair game. In one Short interview with Barbara Walters last week Reagan said All these things a in denying responsibility for the deficit a that Are totally untrue a that a president a a can to spend a dime Only the Congress he has been saying this for years. In fact though appropriations Are made in the form of Laws. Presidents sign the Laws. This is pretty Basic stuff. A that he sent eight budgets to Capitol Hill and a weight times they were pronounced a dead on in fact the doa metaphor never arose until Halfway through his second term after the republicans lost the Senate. And anyway when Congress changed his budgets it Wasny to to add spending but to redirect it. A that in his eight years the country saw the greatest a economic growth in our country a utter flaming nonsense. Overall economic growth during his watch was lower than in the 1970s, 1960s and 1950s. A that a i can to believe that you can raise taxes without reducing his emphasis the in his Book As Well As the interview he discusses this theory As if it Hasni to been tested. It has he Cut taxes and revenues went Down and the deficit exploded then he stopped cutting taxes and started raising them and revenues went up and the deficit stopped exploding. He just absolutely flatly refuses to see. Why did a person with such flaming aggressive consistent perfect Lack of interest in truth become the major player in our politics and Why did he sustain popularity this is a phenomenon that still insists upon examination Reagan does not and did not lie to Hurt anybody or to enrich his Rich friends. He Only lied to win elections which is widely considered Normal behaviour and to win arguments. Mainly arguments i suspect. He is above everything an ideologue and ideologues done to care about much but winning arguments. Because the american people done to have the patience for sorting through these arguments All they see is a Guy sticking to what he believes in. I began looking for a Job As an editorial sum because i wanted to Bash Ronald Reagan for a living. When i found calling a considered it less a Job than a works to was athe most important in the ?9rlln journalism i the 1980s, and some thug i was bom to do. I would have done it for half the Lieve Etha ass actuary a but nobody win be in my Middle years i have chosen my epitaph Reagan Basher. I believe that v3x the Erica equivalent of nazism in one and Only one sense shtji111 ,.a da7 when almost Etez body who was alive during the period denies Ever Havig had anything to do with but i will be on record. In a covered now that Reagan himself is More or their de arcs ts1 Good live ave it j alternative is not to have that. A new and 1 win always cherish the Uturo a a Toure 1 convinced the nation theg rtt ? Eagan was what he was a Atn incan charlatan. The characterization still gets laughed at in some circles. He a such a Nice Guy after All so widely liked. Remember the scene in a broadcast news in which Albert Brooks tries to convince Holly Hunter that William Hurt is the Devil she looks at Brooks As if he a crazy because hurts character is such a likable charming inoffensive fellow. And Brooks says basically a Well did you think that when the Devil arrived head have horns and a Pitchfork and go around tripping old people a the Devil would have to be likable in order not to put people on guard. And to be really successful a political charlatan would have to be seen As Nice and honest or head never get started. Martin Gottlieb is an editorial Page writer for tha Dayton Ohio daily news.
