A Reader says other units rate recognition i have noticed your paper leans heavily towards coverage of the 82nd airborne. The 82nd is not the Only unit Active in operation desert shield. Most of the other units Are actually out living in the desert dealing with the sandstorms flies bugs snakes and scorpions. I am with the 3rd in 27th Field arty regt Mars multiple launch rocket systems from it. Bragg . Though the elements Are rough a morale is High a i have enclosed a photo of the Alpha Battery reactionary Force. The a team reactionary Force is As follows left to right Back Row pfc. Tom coffin pfc. Ronnie Moore pfc. Recently i completed the 1990 Community commander assessment Survey. I was particularly concerned about the Survey because it seemed to concentrate primarily on Quality of life outside the work place. I feel that if Quality of life is poor within the workplace during duty hours the effects will Likely have a greater Impact on the rest of the family. This Survey should have asked questions concerning the soldiers working conditions Chain of command responsiveness Quality of military education training the soldiers feelings of self Worth Etc. We can continue to improve Quality of life facilities but until we improve Quality of life at work soldiers and families will continue to be discontented with the military. I realize that the nature of the military Mission is Firma a non itself and Little can be done to change that. However leaders and commanders at All Levels can help make life just a Little bit better by not creating unnecessary work and by becoming caring teachers and mentors a True leaders. If you understand your soldiers goals and assist them in achieving those goals even if they intend to leave the service the result will be John shark spec. Jeff Rhinehart. Middle Row standing spec. We Are ready to meet the threat if necessary. A pfc. Paul h. Johnson operation desert shield. Happier More motivated soldiers and families. I am not dissatisfied with the military but with military leaders. Unfortunately Many leaders in the army done to care about the Quality of life both in the work place As Well As in the Community. The common message from these leaders is that the Only thing that matters is the Mission and making a name for yourself. Their motivational techniques Are extremely poor favouring negative motivation threat of punishment Over positive motivation. Twelve to 14-hour work Days Are the Norm and weekends have become Shorter work Days in civilian clothes. This leaves Little time if any for family activities unless i take leave. I understand the need for sacrifice. I Salute the thousands of soldiers serving in the Gulf Region and i Pray for their families daily. But for the most part the greatest hardships placed on soldiers today Are not caused by War or threat of War but by insensitive self serving leaders. This mobilization has required the Call up of thousands of National guard and resent a citizen soldiers to join or support those sent to the Middle East.
