European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 24, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday december 24f 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 army s physical training test discussed every six months we the personnel of the . Army Are required to take a physical training test. Why is so much emphasis put on High scoring on this test docs this test measure your physical combat readiness the test consists of three events push set two mile run. Every person in the army should be Able to meet the standards to pass this test. It is a very easy test. A lot of people cheat on these tests. They know the grader or they get a grader who does no to test them to standards. All that accomplishes is an army that looks Strong on paper but is actually physically weak. The it test is irrelevant toward a lot of our jobs. I am in the infantry. Combat runs Lee and weapon Rucksack runs obstacle courses and Road marches Are belter suited to my Job and can help measure whether or not i am physically combat ready. I feel that More emphasis should be placed on physical events that will some Day determine if you and i arc physically combat ready and on whether we live or die. A pfc. Ronald Saldana. Berlin editors note Tisa eur come sgt. Maj. George la Horvath Iii replies while i agree with much or what you say there a re some things 1 feel differently about first i agree the aft is an easy test if you Are sat to fled with meeting the minimum Standard. Second yes every Soldier regard Jess of rank should be Able to pass the aft on any Given Day and yes for some soldiers other types of physical fitness activities should be integrated. Infantry soldiers As you Point out should integrate Road marches obstacle courses and different degrees of conditioning for it. 1 have always stated that a. A sergeant is Only limited by his or her imagination As to what kinds of things can be done for their soldiers physical fitness and b. The aft As is is not enough nor is it designed to be the Only Type of physical activity for soldiers. I feel that a truly professional Soldier should strive to make a maximum Effort. The army also provides you with courts and weight rooms in gyms for soldiers to use in developing their physical fitness. Each individual has a responsibility to go beyond it in his or her own physical fitness program. I disagree with you however that the it test is irrelevant it is a measure of fitness and attitude. If a Soldier must use a Friendly grader or cheat in order to pass a it test ill show you a Soldier who approaches everything he or she does with the same attitude. That Soldier is a dangerous one to have next to you on the Battlefield. You or any Soldier should not tolerate that kind of Soldier. You should not stand by and let a fellow Soldier cheat on the it test or in any other Endeavor we can not tolerate it thanks for your interest in the physical fitness program. A sergeant thanks those who Lent a hand i am composing this letter in Hopes that it will reach. Bat 2/3 a no. 458 . 09045 Telephone civilian 06403-71737 dear Ann Landers with nil the ranting and raving about animal rights these Days it is time somebody spoke out about a so called sport that is nothing but an atrocity. Let me Start at the beginning. I m a Nebraska Farmer. Last year some very pleasant neighbors invited me to go Deer Hunting. 1 applied for and received a permit. Since i had never been Hunting 1 was totally unprepared for the events of that Day. 1 discovered that animals have no rights or even a sporting Chance for that matter. Truckloads of Hunters jammed the roads armed with binoculars cd and dogs not to mention planes scouting from the skies. This of course is illegal it it goes on just the same. I was there and i saw it. After Only three Houra three Bucks and two does had been shot by the Mem in our party. Only one Doe and one Buck were bagged the other three animals got away which Means they were suffering and dying in some Shelc Reltor a ditch. So Long is an animal is not brought in according to the permit the Hunter can keep on Hunting. One Man in our party shot three Bucks and All three of his animals got away. To me this is a sick Way to have a Good time. I will never go Hunting again. To Sec those Beautiful Graceful animals shot Down Tor the fun of it was horrible 1 know a lot of so called sportsmen will be angry with me for writing this letter but to my Way of thinking Deer Hunting is something animal rights organizations should investigate. These poor defenceless animals need help. Certainly someone can figure but a More humane Way to control their population. I want my children to see Deer As the Beautiful animals they Are not As targets in a sick contest Between men and beasts. A onetime Hunter from Pierce neb. Dear Nebraska you have written a letter that is sure to raise the hackles of a great Many Hunters. If the animal rights people really want to do something of value 1 suggest they concentrate on Deer Hunters. Dear Ann Landers our 35-Ycat-old daughter is getting remarried soon a a fatty so first husband was very abusive. and 1 were greatly relieved when she asked if we would take our grandson now 8, into our Home Patty a Fiance is very comfortable financially and generous too. He is also nearly twice her age Only a few years younger than i am but he is a very Fine person and seems crazy about her. This brings me to the problem. Patty and her Fiance have decided that her son will not live with them but will remain with his grandma and me. We love this child Ann but we Are both 65. What if something happens to us who will the Little boy have then we Are deeply concerned about this. Should we say something to our daughter the last thing we want to do is put a Damper on the wedding. Fretting in the Golden West dear Golden West 1 have a feeling that the Hoy is better off with you and grandma. Unless he is a Burden keep him As Long As you can actually 65 Isnit old these Days meanwhile i think you Are pretty darn terrific.
